and why doesn't/won't/can't someone just re-release the thing already, especially with the resent populalarity with No Wave.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The original vinyl or the Japanese cd import?

If the vinyl, then HELL YES! Japanese import: download it instead.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

there are legal issues involved. some of the acts were unhappy with eno's production. still, james chance/white's stuff seems to be in circulation again, so who knows?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Grrr, that reminds me of my utter slackah behaviah. Marcello, that's on yer list ey? Well, I paid less for the record (since I was in Japan) but I have made sooooo many copies, I probably went over the forty buxors.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

(The answer is of course "HELL YEAH!" although my boyfriend said he did not like it so much.)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

nathalie how can you have a boyfriend who doesn't like no new york? have you checked t's closet for hidden zappa double live albums? ;-)

i still haven't found my copy, so yeah if you could burn one up for me that would be smashing.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha nah, he does not like Zappa either (so that makes up for the NNY no-punctum). :-)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Had is on vinyl originally, but haven't had a turntable in ages. I believe I paid $36 for the compact disc as a Japanese import....just so I could take it home, play it once ("Yeah, that's what I remember it sounding like!") and throw it on the pile. Does it get played a lot? No, but yes....I think it's worth owning.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i am firmly of the opinion that Prince's "tambourine" is more no-wave than the whole of "no new york" put together. myth making like no wave always backfires cos its just some slightly artsy punk bands who were never really up to much. sorely disappointing

bob snoom, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

No. Great album, but not worth collector prices. I'm not sure why it's so expensive, it's not that hard to find. I got my copy about 6 years ago for like $8 or something, mint.

Snoom is a jaded robot, but hey I like Prince too. Why compare apples and oranges?

hstencil, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

there just seems to be an enormous dichotomy in what is understood as "no wave" between grey DIY song clatter of a claustrophobic nature, and "free jazz meets disco!!!! (whoop-de-doo)" . i prefer the latter immensely and posit that god is my co pilot 7"s & "speed yr trip" cd, bailey & tacuma & weston's "mirakle", and arto lindsay trio's "aggregates" epitomise this approach perhaps more than the "original progenitors" (the meters? the fall? lonnie donegan?).
and indeed as always I AM AN ANDROID I AM A ROBOT I AM A ROBOT I AM AN ANDROID (to the tune of destiny's child's "survivor")...

bob snoom, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

''Grrr, that reminds me of my utter slackah behaviah''

um, you promised me a copy as well. do u rememeber?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure that anything is worth $40.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Not even world peace?

hstencil, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

haha. world peace..

if you've been looking for something for long enough, sometimes 40$ isn't that rediculous, just to shake the feeling of inadequacy and longing off your back.

i just forked out 40$ + shipping for the first This Heat record, got it home, and realized that although it was great, i already had most of the songs on the peel sessions or other comps. bah!

the only other record i've spent that much on before was Tim Buckley's Starsailor. by the time i finally got a copy, i didn't care as much.

so maybe the answer is no, it's not worth it if you've been waiting for so long. they hype may be stronger than the bite

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Not even world peace?

Is that what the followup to 'Loveless' is called?

J (Jay), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

if you're thinking about this copy - it's a CD-R. You can tell by the black overleaf and the Made in Japan label.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i would never pay more than $25 for a record ($30 tops), EVER, so it ain't worth it. especially when you can download the damn thing for free.

the high prices the vinyl copies fetch seem to be directly related to that wonderful ebay phenomenon of "how much will some sucker in japan/iowa/greece pay for THIS?"

your null fame (yournullfame), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ok... I *do* think it's hard to find. I'm in used record stores all the time and rarely see a copy. I don't think $40.00 is too much to pay for a rare record that you really want, but maybe I have more disposable income/am more crazy than other ILXers. I won't comment on the music; suffice to say that I don't miss my copy. Also the recorded sound is poor and the cover is ugly.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"especially when you can download the damn thing for free."

Yeah, maybe so, but I'm of the perspective that having downloaded simply the music "isn't enough"? I need the whole package -- artwork, liner notes, lyrics, etc. To quote Tod [A]shley from Firewater: "I like the artifact. This is, I'm sure, very passé, but I like books, I like records, and I like cd's. I like that there's something to hold in your hands and look at. I like the physicality of it, the tactile aspect of it. You can look through the book and see the images and hold something in your hands. Not that it's a product, mind you, but it's not just some abstract wave form or file on your computer, but rather a physical, tangible thing. It's more like a work of art than something you happened to download. Maybe I'm just old and sentimental, though. There's something also something about the permanence. You have this 'thing,' -- it's an actual object. You could buy it at a flea market or find it in the trash. It's a tangible thing, it's not just something floating around in outer space. It's an actual object. It's a document. Why that's different to me, I'm not really sure."

I agree completely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

or you could just burn the mp3s to cd??

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 04:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I think its a joke. a poor excuse for charging 40 bucks. I don't buy recs for more than £12. anything more is unfair. downloading is a great way to correct for inflation of CD prices.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"downloading is a great way to correct for inflation of CD prices."

True enough, Coolio. I'm not defending the obscene amounts of money they currently demand for a cd (which costs what? Under a dollar to manufacture?), but I still prefer the whole package. Call me old-fashioned.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yes grandpa.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I don't know if it's worth $40, but its a damn good album. I would like to stumble upon it in a record store someday. I have tried to download it just to tide me over until then, but I can't find any of it online. Where are you guys getting it???

i just want to point out that the euro is worth roughly the same as the dollar, and it wouldn't be unusual to pay 25 euro for a normal new release cd here in dublin...
