The Fall vs Motorhead

The first house I lived in in London was near Camden Road overground station, it was owned by a Russian emigre and everything was painted bright orange and light blue, except the ceiling which was purple and had glowing stars on it, there were oddly-shaped windows everywhere and abstract patterns on the stairwell, downstairs lived a barmaid who disappeared soon after her stalker was cabbaged by a brick thrown off the railway bridge. Mike Leigh bought the house for nothing for a film set ('Career Girls') and evicted everyone, what a working-class champion. Fucker. I suppose the ppl this house represented were too far beneath the waterline even for the likes of him. Y'know, the green-teeth end of Brit-hippie, where everyone has one arm and a clapped-out BSA, houseboats, gravelly speed, Kestrel, peasant skirts that collect mud. Dogs, dogs, DOGS. Fuck I hate dogs. They scare me and they just seem so undignified, boot 'em in the mouth and they blame themselves and come back for more, just like hippies themselves I guess. (Except for the ones that turn MEAN [Lemmy - "Ferociously stoned" - what is that? Yipes]) I got to hear lots of stories about Dave Brock being a fascist arsehole, Micheal Eavis being a fascist arsehole, everybody in the world is a fascist arsehole, the person selling dreamcatchers at Rival Market X is a capitalist exploiter but the one selling them at half-price is a traitor fucking up the scene, etc. But I didn't mind these types too much, except when they all got into Spiral Tribe and really unbearable shit like that. The idea of transplanting US-style desert biker culture to a tiny island with crowded thoroughfares where it rains all the fuckin' time (and the quality of drugs is v.v.bad) is kind of cool, certainly more endearing than the formalised Japanese (redundancy alert!) take on same, tho I'ven't been there so I dunno. One objection tho - can anyone tell me the derivation and explanation of that HORRIBLE Brit-hippy accent? Sort of a RP/Midlands cross, always soft-spoken tending toward the wheedling? Y'know, the accent you hear near ATMs alot. (In many US cities loitering within 10 feet of an ATM is illegal - C or D?)

Re Fall - well, they play the Bulldog Bash sometimes don't they? Plus making weird connections that make no rational sense is kind of what they're 'about', no? Whoops, broke the fourth wall again there

dave q, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

classic dq thread...

taking the wuestion straight the answer is the orthodox one, the canonical one, the right one...the fall. i dont have time for rock music, i dont like motorhead, i think lemmy is dull.

but the fall as camden rd? maybe, i dont see it too much though, better on burnley-bacup-halifax. but then im talking the 81 model here (ice cream vans).

when did you move to camden rd dave. theres 2 different archetypes of fag-end brithippy surely. the withnalians of camden rd yes, but the more prevalant ones, the ones that are harder to scrub off the face of london, the brightonian fucks...N16, stoke newington, but then gentrification is pushing even them, with their secret stash of $, out...to where? clapton? stratford? tottenham? or do they sell out and push out to walthamstow to join the hordes of E17 ex-hippies?

Motorhead every time (as much as I love the Fall). Simply more interesting and more consistent. And better album covers.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

and is the 2nd form of brithippy being eroded by alpha, and alpha clones. christians seeing young people looking for *something* falling into the spiritualist new age camps that replaced the anarcho-syndicalist cults of the 70s. justification for the guilt, indulge the guilt, a gradual slide towards orthodoxy in a pashmina. even the new ageists on the slide now, not 86 anymore, pick'n'mix 'spirituality' (was going to put pseudo-spirituality but then, realised, all spirituality is pseudo) and alpha replace.

kynevor road types, pristine, how to get around the guilt of consumerism, of individualism, of anomie, via 'spirituality' of course. the bourgeois run wild down church st, chloes and jacks in tow.

but yet, they still flypost Marxist material here, why? they dont care...take it up to seven sisters...

Lived on Camden Rd 94-96 I think. The N16 types seemed really scary, their squats were actually organised and all of them seemed to have been in New Model Army at one point, cycle couriers by day and balaclavas by night (with absolutely no change of demeanour) and they served up huge steaming bowls of stuff that looked like deer 'pellets'. Whereas the Camden crew just wavered between vacuous contentment and vacuous lostness.

dave q, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I just noticed, there's some Alpha shit opened up and flyposted recently here on Caledonia road, but I don't think it'll fly here, cuz the Cally's HARD, according to the Independent. (Full spread on Page 2 sometime last year - "The Lawless Hellhole in Blair's Backyard", comparing it to Kosovo etc., I thought that was a bit silly, or maybe I just don't notice shit anymore)

When have you ever seen some Pop Star trying to look trashy by wearing a Fall shirt? So, Motorhead wins.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"i've bin to thah free FESTivalz-ah, they're like cinemuhs withOUT no filmz-ah"

"When have you ever seen some Pop Star trying to look trashy by wearing a Fall shirt"
but arn't the fall 10000000000 times more aggressive, offensive, underground + original and inovating??
i think that pop stars don't wear a fall shirts coase it scares them.
for me motorhead is the classic metal and alot better than lot o' those other metalheads. but for me now even against much tuffer compatition its THE FALL.

"i think that pop stars don't wear a fall shirts coase it scares them."

I think it's `cos Fall shirts tend to be a bit dull....an adjective that's hard to apply to Motorhead iconography.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i accually never wore or saw any fall shirts or motorhead shirts for that metter. but if motorhead shirts are anything like their album covers i'll order 10 please ;)

skid, Friday, 24 January 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

am I the only one who really liked the fall's album cover art?

geeta, Friday, 24 January 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

But I didn't mind these types too much, except when they all got into Spiral Tribe and really unbearable shit like that.

The best bit from, I think, the best post that dave q has ever made. awesome. Spiral Tribe = ugh.

I like motorhead a lot, but I like "Last Orders" from "Short Circuit: live at the Electric Circus" better than anything Motorhead ever did. Better than anything most people ever did, actually. "Short Circuit: Live at the electric circus" is a great little album, I strongly recommend you find a copy, alex in NYC! It's really good!!

"am I the only one who really liked the fall's album cover art?"
put me down too,
the Dragnet aspecially is one HELL of a cover, im still searching for the shirt to go with that.

skid, Friday, 24 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Trick question: Lemmy is God.

Motorhead wins, jeez. I thought everyone already knew that anytime it's like "________ vs. Motorhead" Motorhead always wins.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

i wish that this comparison had been more vigorously debated and fleshed out ;_;
