The term for this is Jegog.

I have Jegog of Negara on the King label and Jegog II on the JVC label and they're both quite good, although there's one overlapping piece between the two. Also good is Jegog: The Bamboo Gamelan of Bali on CMP. Arion's budget-priced Music From Western Bali (aka Musique de l'ouest) has five different types of bamboo-based music on it.

I'd have to go back and listen closely to recommend one over the others, although the variety on the Arion CD is pretty cool.

c'mon, isn't anybody else going to bring some jegog-style love to this thread?

yeh it's a bit slack isn't it? thanks doug for those. i'm sure there was a relatively recent release (ocora, perhaps?) of kebyar mixed with jegog in the jittery fast contemporary style which i saw reviewed somewhere but can't seem to track down. hmmm. guess it's going to be a fair slog on that one

it would certainly seem that jegog is ripe for plundering by somebody or another. expect timbaland to include some phat jegog beats on a future project.

Is jegog from Java and Bali, or where? I haven't heard of bamboo for gamelan instruments.
