Trojan box sets

Anyone know which ones are worth buying? I'm talking about the small, 3-CD sets with different focuses, such as skinhead reggae, ska, dub, lovers rock, "mod reggae," Rude Boy, dancehall, even an X-rated one.
I'd like to get a few since they're budget priced, but there are so many. Which ones stand out?

Jim M (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

dub #2 - standout track: "casanova dub"... EVIL DUB.

gygax!, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

gygax gave me Dub Vol. 2 for my b-day last year (thanks gygax!) and it is indeed quite wonderful. Especially glad that it had dub versions of songs I already had in other forms (Dr. Alimantado's "I Shot the Barber" re-worked by King Tubby as "I Trim the Barber", etc.)I've heard Vol. 1 and it was pretty solid as well.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

awwwwwwww shakey mo!

when's the housewarming party?

gygax!, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've mentioned here buying 15 in one day a while ago - Virgin were knocking them out at £6 each. I thought they were all pretty terrific, but it depends on your interests, whether you prefer ska or dub or the rootsier or poppier stuff. I want to collect the set (Tim Hopkins may have all of them, I suspect), but I'll probably only pick them up when they get reduced.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm always seeing these around and as soon as I get to the counter I think "no" and put it back. I only have the first dub one. It's okay but a bit sprawling and only showcases about ten acts at the most throughout the three discs. Also, I find three discs at once quite a lot to sit and listen through, despite the obvious value benefits.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

thr roots ones are nice. if you like roots.
the thing is they obviously pick from the rest of the Trojan catalogue. So if you like Lee Perry why not pick up say Build the Ark instead. On the Trojan Dub sets you might get the dub of Travelling, but on the Perry discs you get the vocal and the dub...

recommended Trojan dub disc: "Johnny in the Echo chamber" The Aggrovators.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I have all but 2 or 3 I think. My favourites are :

Lovers Box - even though it's not strictly Lovers, but really mainly soulful rocksteady and one-drop. Some great Bob Andy, Marcia, Pat Kelly etc and the utterly essential Heptone's 'Our Day Will Come'

Rare Groove Box - the later stuff from 72/73 includes some very good roots and DJ tracks. Worth getting for these four : Melody Maker - Keith Hudson and it's version Big Youth's Can You Keep A Secret, The Eternal's Pity The Children and Cornell Campbell's Girl of My Dreams.

The Rocksteady Box hits all the highlights you need from slowed-down ska, rocksteady and very early reggae.

The Producers Box has some very good and notoften compiled Lee Perry stuff from early Black Ark - Black IPA and the sublime Maxie,Niney and Scratch's 'Babylon Burning'. The Clancy Eccles stuff on this set is also essential, although the Joe Gibbs selection doesn't really hint at what a great producer he would become.

Next up would be both of the Dub sets which are consistently good and the Roots Box. I should also confess a weakness for some of the more commercial reggaethat Trojan flooded the British market with in 72-75, as featured on the British Reggae box, Club Reggae Box and some of the later Tighten Up material. Approach with caution - although I think it's mainly ace.

I'm still not sure about the Dancehall box, and the Jamaican Superstars box is good if you like Jamaica Lovers circa 69-71, featurig early Gregory Isaacs, Alton and some splendid Delroy Wilson. If you like the more soulful side of things get it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

**Dr. Alimantado's "I Shot the Barber" re-worked by King Tubby as "I Trim the Barber", etc.)**

The original is John Holt's 'Ali Baba'. There are a million and one versions around including the two you mention, Treasure Isle All Stars 'Arabian Dub' (anyone know who actually engineered this, since it sure as hell wasn't the 'producer' Duke Reid - Tim H to thread!), and a couple of really wild Tubby's versions 'Borderline Dub' and 'Cut Through Dub'.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the lubricated, spermicidal trojan boxes the best.

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin, do you have the calypso box? I was curious about this one. If you have it, can you tell me if it's genuine calypso or mostly calypso-inflected reggae? And whatever it is, is it good?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I have most of these and haven't yet gotten through all of them! I got stuck on dub and producers and rocksteady mostly. I don't have the x-rated one though and I kinda want it.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know a good compilation of late 70's British Lovers Rock?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Calypso: of course the question of whether *genuine* calypso was ever made in Jamaica is raised, zzzz.... I've had a quick listen to the Calypso box, and I don't recall any reggae on there. As I recall it's mostly pre-ska mento-ish stuff with the r&b influence which shot through most Jamaican music at that stage, alongside bits of early ska. I realy like it, and there aren't many sources for stuff of that age. (I bought a fine late 50s / early 60s Jamaican doo-wop CD the other week, mind...)

Dr. C: I always assumed those Treasure Isle dubs were Errol T having fun, but I have no evidence for that.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds plausible Tim. Do YOU know any good comps of British Lovers circa 76-79? I gotta have some.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure of any specifically British ones (at least not ones which are available...) The Rewind Selecta lovers sets were pretty decent as I recall.

The Piccadilly Circus branch of Tower is knocking out the best of Janet Kay for 99p right now, which has its moments. Sorry not to be of any more help.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Amateurist, I don't have that one. Trust the wisdom of Dr C and Tim, both of whom are far more worth listening to about reggae than I am.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

just took the gambit and got the "rastafari" box set. just thought i'd tell you lot. I've listened to the first cd. Pleasant enough, if a bit slow paced and unimaginative in spots.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
I just picked up the "Singles" box on a whim. Haven't listened to it enough yet to form an opinion, though I see AMG isn't nuts about it. Hrm hrm.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 21 June 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

not am I. the problem I have it (a) lousy mastering and (b) not-so-hot track selection. (do you see!)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 21 June 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

virgin, that evil store, were selling the boxsets in a 5 for £30 deal a while back.

when they're good, they're very very good.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

and when they're just OK, it's most of the time

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

plenty cheap!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dub sets: not much variety in terms of artists represented. still really good even though recording quality leaves something to be desired.
tighten up set: much variety, many classics, almost every song is classic. recording quality leaves something blah blah it's CHEAP!

oops (Oops), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

aight so i know this shit is cheap and theres three cds, is there one for more recent jamaican stuff!! i mostly despise that weeded out 70s vibe but id go bananas for three discs of r kelly-jacking dancehall or FIRE COME BURN ALL FASSYS harsh mc stuff

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Get thee to a Greensleeves sampler Mr Trife.

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 21 June 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i bought the Dub one but never listened to it. one day i will and this will be good.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the upsetters uk singles set is quite something - odd cover verions and instrumentals galore - jolly good.

and the x-rated one is absolutely hilarious. (cd2 of 3 currently on the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.reggae newsgroup you might still get cd1 if you're quick)

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 21 June 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

not am I. the problem I have it (a) lousy mastering and (b) not-so-hot track selection. (do you see!)

I was worried people would say that. Damn it, it was between "Singles" and "Tighten Up" & I figured I couldn't go wrong with the former...

BUT I APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN LED DOWN THE PRIMROSE PATH.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 21 June 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The _UK Hits_ box is terrific, if (for some of us older types) a little overfamiliar...

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 21 June 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're looking for more recent stuff I'd recommend the OST Third world cop as a good primer. If the UK press were up to speed they'd be creaming themselves over instead of The harder they come, great though it is.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the 12" box is the best by far, it only has a few mediocre tracks and even those have v. nice discomixes.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

if i had to pick three i'd pick: roots, rocksteady and revive (

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if i had to pick three i'd pick: roots, rocksteady and revive (i have ten of these).

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I have about 25; I'm partial to Instrumentals, Calypso and Ska

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I just heard the instrumental track "Storm Warning" from a Trojan Box Set by Somebody Somebody and the Comets, at it kicks a significant quantity of easy-skanking booty.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with gaz regarding the dub sets. there are some standout dubs on the roots set that blow anything on the dub boxes away, and some great dj tracks. basically lots of variety on the roots set.

the rocksteady and revive boxes are just crammed with beautiful, lazy tracks that sound like you're tuning into late-night jamaican shortwave from the 60s. warm summer nights...

i second the recommendations on calypso and 12" too.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have ska, club reggae and the DJ box. I used the DJ one as an alarm clock for quite a while and it was highly effective.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll make anyone who wants at least one "disc of r kelly-jacking dancehall." Lotsa Sanchez, lotsa Anthony Cruz. I'd also be happy to prepare a FIRE BUN mix...with no burning of chi chi men or batty boys.

cybele (cybele), Sunday, 22 June 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an album on Trojan called 'Work Your Soul (jamaican 60's & northern soul 1966 - 1974 trojan records 2003)', it's astonishingly good. Real lazy poppy reggae, you all should hear it. 'Make me yours' by Phyllis Dillon is the loveliest song I've heard all year. I've got it from Ssk so don't know how widely available it is to buy.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 22 June 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

make me a mix please cybele!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the Dub (Volume 1), DJ, Instrumental, Producers and Tighten Up boxes and although they contain mucho great music I find them intensely irritating. For a start, why have 3 CDs when you only fill up each CD with 40-50 minutes of material? Why are the sleevenotes so crap? Why do so many of the tracks SOUND so crap, often mastered far too quietly? Why does Trojan constantly recycle the same material over and over again? Why is the actual musical quality of the CDs so variable, with classics nestling next to duds and obscurities that thorough deserve to be obscure? I don't know who's running Trojan these days but Trojan's past record of squandering one of the greatest back catalogues in the history of mankind is truly lamentable.

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but they're cheap!

oops (Oops), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want guaranteed blooper-free quality then shell out the few extra quid for the sets with the card wrap around sleeves that Trojan are doing. The dub set 'Flashing Echo' is absolutely magnificent, as is 'Punky Reggae Party'.
Agreed that the 3CD sets sometimes have dodgy material, but there's always 10 or so tracks that are just magical. I got the Upsetter box yesterday and it's worth the 7 quid for Eric Donaldson's 'Freedom Street' alone.

The best box is 'Rare Groove'. The Big Yout', Keith Hudson and Cornell Cambell tracks on disc 3 are just amazing. Nearly as good is the Lovers box (even though it's not what us brits would call *real* lovers). The Jamaican Superstars box is worth it for the Delroy Wilson and Alton Ellis tracks, and I also really love the Rocksteady box.

The sound quality - what are you on about people? That's what fucking reggae, rocksteady, one drop etc SOUNDS LIKE!! Turn it up - it's beautiful!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the Lovers is pretty lousy, but let me second Rare Groove recommendation, particularly since it has Jerry Lewis's "Rhythm Pleasure," one of my favorite records of all time, on it

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

MM - b-but Lovers has the mighty Heptones - 'Our Day Will Come' , The Melodians - ' Ring Of Gold' and Sharon Forrester's 'Silly, Wasn't I'.

IIRC 90% of discs one and two are fantastic.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The sound quality - what are you on about people? That's what fucking reggae, rocksteady, one drop etc SOUNDS LIKE!! Turn it up - it's beautiful!

On the contrary, thanks to Trojan's policy of endlessly releasing the same tracks I have several tracks which appear on different CDs and also on non-Trojan CDs and when they appear on non-Trojan CDs they seem to be both louder, less muffled and (largely) free of scratches, clicks, pops etc.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Trojan sound quality has always been sub par. I'd recommend Pressure sounds or, of course, Blood and Fire's reissues. Trojan simply doesn't take enough time and energy processing the crap out of the old records. Sure, I expect my Bob Marley ska 45 of "One Love" to be a little crackly, and I expect Lee Perry's productions to sound like they are somewhat submerged, but there is a difference between B&F's reissues and Trojan's...

cybele (cybele), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

a huge difference

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

i like the Nyabinghi one, but Trojan had a very limited selection of recordings to pick from for this box, so by the time you get to the third disc it's pretty much more of the same as you've already heard.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

what is the deal with ROOTS & CULTURE??

the ROOTS box is pretty much hands-down the best one they've ever done ... i was pretty hyped for RASTAFARI when it came out, but i listen to it much less than ROOTS because it seems like the majority of it is slightly glossier and better produced - sort of post-roots political reggae shading into political lovers (?!?) ... so is ROOTS & CULTURE going to be the heavier murkier complement to the RASTAFARI set??

also as far as NYABINGHI goes, it's pretty much the official count ossie / bongo herman / ras michael trojan compilation, except instead of seperating them out (like on PRODUCERS) they've mixed them up.

also anybody heard 70s or 60s?? it looks sort of cheesy ... reggae/pop covers are nowhere near as good an idea as they sound on paper (i think i like maybe five tracks off SOULFUL REGGAE ... and the beatles box looks awful ... though soul jazz's "hustle" set was maybe the exception to the rule)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

i only have 15 of these suckers ... who's got the biggest box set collection???

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

"i like the Nyabinghi one, but Trojan had a very limited selection of recordings to pick from for this box, so by the time you get to the third disc it's pretty much more of the same as you've already heard."

Which would only be a problem if what we already heard HADN'T been amazing.

I only have 2 or 3 of them. They tend to repeat a lot of stuff from other things I have.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah like this Roots set looks amazing, but I know I have at least half of this on other stuff (other Trojan stuff IN FACT.) Same with the Roots & Culture box, even though I recognize less of that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

There's the occasional gem in all those releases, and novelty in the X-rated one, but my advice: Stick to the essential compilations they put out before dumping all this shit into cheap boxes:

'Rudies All 'Round
Club Ska '67
etc.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

REBEL MUSIC!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

See that's why I like the Ragga and Nyabinghi ones. 90% of that stuff isn't compiled on CD anywhere else.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Was the "Beatles" one as bad as the reviews had it? Or 'as good as' the average Trojan box?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I've got a Trojan Beatles comp, single CD, some of which is really really good - versions of "Don't Let Me Down" and "Blackbird" particularly so. Some of it's rubbish too - so about the norm for Trojan.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone heard the Trojan "Punky Reggae" comp? How punky is it? Is it worth getting?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I feel kinda like a corny indie fukk for even being interested in it though, like I should just buy "real" reggae instead. But I find it interesting when two genres cross-pollinate.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

It's a collection of mainly rockers/steppers/roots/militant singles which were comtemperaneous(ish) with 76/77 punk and played at gigs at the time. It's all pretty well known and obvious stuff e.g Under Heavy Manners, Cross Over, Mr. Cop, Man Next Door etc.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

i think i have that comp but i don't remember it being particularly "punky" whatever that would mean in this case; it's nice, though

dave k, Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the answers. I feel like maybe I shouldn't be buying comps and should instead be buying albums instead.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Ordinarily, yes. But the medium is singles based to the greatest degree.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Check, Ken.

The Popish Plot (dymaxia), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

it's producer's medium as well and as you are NOT going to be finding original copies of nothing, comp, comp away

Old School (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

yes.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Also the Trojan box sets look purdy, and the Studio One discs look nice all lined up, too. Pretty colours! So yeah, go for comps.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll give Punky Reggae Party a try as well, for similar CIF reasons to n/a. Are these things easy to find on Soulseek? I've found a couple of Soul Jazz % Dynamite comps on there (that were great, btw). I need to get down to Fopp. Maybe this weekend, since it's the first fucking weekend in (what seems like) ages where I don't have to go away somewhere.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

n/a, if you haven't heard it, you might do better with Wild Dub a collection of '77 punx doing reggae music. It's very much more a cross-polination. I think the term "punky reggae" comes from a Bob Marley song and has little to do with actual punk rock music. But I could be wrong about that.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Cool, thanks! I was listening to the Trojan Mod Reggae set this morning that a friend copied for me and thought it was interesting that like half of the songs sound nothing like "reggae," or at least my idea of what reggae sounds like. A lot of it is more R&B/soul, with one song sounding exactly like Booker T & the MGs. My friend carefully typed out all the song names/artists for me and then burned the cd in apparently random order, so I have no idea which song is which. But he also copied me "War Ina Babylon" by Max Romeo so all is forgiven.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Was the "Beatles" one as bad as the reviews had it? Or 'as good as' the average Trojan box?

Have only listened to the first CD of it so far, but it seems good! It gets dodgiest with early Beatles material tho, because you're used to those songs being so fast and energy-filled, the covers seem a bit weighty by comparsion.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Stumbled across these in a high street sale @ £3.99 each!

Got Jamaican Superstars, D.J and the Reggae Duets. There wasn't a lot of choice though.

Trojan sound quality has always been sub par. I'd recommend Pressure sounds or, of course, Blood and Fire's reissues. Trojan simply doesn't take enough time and energy processing the crap out of the old records.

now that Universal are in charge and have reissued Tighten Up volume 1 with extras, have they revisited the masters, and given the music a touch up a la Blood and fire, or are they just pumping out more shelf fillers ?

mark e, Friday, 27 February 2009 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

....?

Mark G, Friday, 27 February 2009 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

sorry mark, you asking me to clarify my statement, or bumping the thread hoping for someone to answer ?
i'm assuming its the latter.
i have to say, i think that sanctuary did a great job with the Trojan catalogue.
the packaging was always good (once they got a dedicated design house involved, and the depth they trawled the catalogue
ie not just skimming/reissuing the known stuff, was quite special.
i very much doubt the new owners will put as much effort into their treasure trove.
i would love to see me being proved wrong of course.
subsequently, a major factor for repurchasing anything would be if the universal resissues get a remastering job done on them ..

mark e, Friday, 27 February 2009 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

The latter, yeah.

I got a great 4CD box/book of "Reggae Greats" for £3 at Fopp, this being a Sanctuary/Trojan release. Can't complain at that price, of course, but the sound does seem to be somewhat 'muchbetter' than I remember.

Mark G, Friday, 27 February 2009 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

there are about 80 of these box sets. it's overwhelming!

lala is shuttering at the end of this month, so i began searching its archives for a few of these boxes to pick up. the trojan 12" box-set is only $12, which seems like an extraordinarily low price. is it any good? any others (which are all a shade pricier (either $17 or $21)) must-haves?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't heard them all, but my favorites are: Tighten Up, Rare Groove, and Lovers

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

was actually just checking out the jamaican r&b set. sounds good!

amazed at how much quality reggae was made in such a short time, and how much remains relatively undiscovered.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:26 (sixteen years ago)

i have like 25 of these, they're all good. get the dub ones and the roots ones to start. 12" one and producers series one worth checking out too

am0n, Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

also the rockers and upsetter boxes

am0n, Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

i wonder why the 12" set is less expensive than the others? it's true on lala and 7digital.

anyway, yeah. sounds solid. i enjoyed john holt's version of you'll never find (another love like mine) far more than i was expecting to. it runs long, but he gives it a vaguely menacing edge that suits the song very well.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:47 (sixteen years ago)

yep, really like his version of that.
2nd the dub sets recommendation. only caveat is that the lack of fidelity esp on the low end that's present on all these sets doesn't serve dub well.

i suppose that's because the tracks are from "deep in the vault" and weren't well-preserved?

i wonder why the 12" set is less expensive than the others?

12" = vocal cut mixed w/ dub into one long track, prob not as popular to the avg listener

the tennors' re-imagining of simon & garfunkel's the only little boy in new york, renamed weather report on the trojan suadehead box set, is f---g amazing. the lilting sway of the chorus kind of trumps the flaccid, tho very pretty, original chorus.

Ernie's has the cassette version for 50 cents! They had the CD for cheap for like a million years.

THE QUEST IS THE QUEST (aldo), Sunday, 2 May 2010 10:44 (sixteen years ago)

wound up getting the 12" box-set and the suadehead box-set. also found good prices on other reggae at lala:

  • george faith, to be a lover ($6)
  • ijahman levi, haile i hymn ($3)
  • justin hinds & the dominoes, jezebel ($5)
  • johnny clarke, rockers time now ($6)
i'm going back for the trojan dub box-set, and maybe others. i wish they had the rude-boy box-set.

These Trojan sets were always an awesome deal. The only downside is that after you buy a few of them it all gets a little overwhelming. If someone told me the entire collection was just the same 15 or so discs of Jamaican music (a mere five of these boxes) mixed up in different orders, I'd almost be tempted to check.

yeah, i'm getting the "overwhelming" point already. my itunes posts album covers for every artist on a compilation, and that means i have a lot of images of these box sets dotting the landscape of my cover images.

all 4 of those albums are pretty good
