i say classic - the backing sounds like alice coltrane, the lyrics... the lyrics i'll talk about tomorrow when i'm not completely knackered. for my money it's (hyperbole alert - i'm sure i'm forgetting loads of songs) the best pop ballad (in a broad sense) since "born to make you happy", anyway.

ay, it brings a lump to the throat. there's something weird about his voice on that one...did he have a cold?

which streets song shall we do tomorrow?

let's do 'geezers need excitement' since it's still my favorite (barely)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll just say that I think it's a great album, and stop noting how much I like every track individually, though I do.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Weak Become Heroes" is light-years above everything else I've heard on the album, largely because of the off-kilter subdivision of the beat into 5/4 and 3/4.

"Stay Positive" is positively dirge-like and uninvolving.

This was my least favorite for months, and then it just clicked one day not too long ago. Still might be my least favorite, but now I think it's pretty good. Maybe too long?

This track spoils the whole album for me. It's not a bad track but it's just such a downer! It just leaves me wanting to slit my wrists by the end of the album and so I always switch it off after the "irony of it all". Really, I can't hear this track. Not mad on Weak Become Heroes either, but maybe it's the dodgy title that put me off.

the backing sounds like alice coltrane

grr i've already broken my new year's resolution not to ever say "this sounds like x". oh well.

possible (damning) criticism: it's the "everybody hurts" of the 00s.

Tom Ewing to thread!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

this one doesn't do too much for me. sounded a bit like a rza backing track which is kind of played-out, no?.
