He does excellent cut n paste electronic folk, he's my oldest friend and he's 99% sure of a deal with a small British indie! He got an email to day that is gushing in its praise and refers to sorting something out in the very near future. The email talks about The label have never even put out an album before and they're going to do so for him!

I've never, ever been this proud of anyone or anything ever! Yay!

Is there any advice you lovely ILMers can give him? What should he do / not do?

expect to make money...

I mean, he shouldn't do that.

What does he sound like? Any MP3s?

Cut and paste electronic folk sounds like my kind of thing

Erm, no mp3s yet, I'm trying to sort out a website for him. I've not asked his permission to talk about it on here so I'd rather not give out names yet. He's not expecting to make money. He's just chuffed he'll have enough cash for a trip to Japan this summer. He got offered something by a pretty big indie but they wanted him to re-record everything which didn't appeal to his sensibilities. His stuff is lo-fi and works that way. Vocals and guitar recorded thru a shitty computer mic. Oooh I'm excited. I'm going to go put one of his tracks on and dance about a bit.

aha i read about it on AAD. as small labels go, that's pretty small, but they have good distribution.

Aaawwe .... how does "vocals and guitars recorded through shitty computer mic" = "cut and paste electronic folk"?

I was expecting screengazer made exclusively of Fairport Convention samples.

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a mix of that and really cut-up samples. Although he's using these less these days for "copyright" reasons or somesuch. Imagine Squarepusher remixing the Wicker Man soundtrack with Japanese girl vocals mixed in with his own dulcet tones.

This sounds like the Moby of indie-pop.

(I seem to use artists/bands that I like as insults more often than I do artists/bands that I don't like)

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats pretty funny cos people always say he looks like Moby which really pisses him off.

Lysnkey is that Shirokuma (sic?) who you posted about previously? I'd love to give him an ear. Interpret that how you will.

Ok - limited details - It is Sh*roku*a and the label is V*lentine Records. Apparently they've never put out an album before and they are willing to do so for Mark. Which is pretty damn cool if you ask me.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
It's all happened officially now and it's Faith and Hope he's gone with, label of Mint Royale, The Alpinestars, Subaqwa . . . . .

First EP is out in July. It is going to rock your bastard socks off.

Congratulations Mr. Mark Corrin and Congrats to F+H for recognising genius when they see it!

Onwards!
