New Sum 41 video mocks the Strokes & the Hives

(and the Vines, too, apparently, but I don't really care about them)

OK, so I saw clips of this on an MTV spot and read about it in the Village Voice, and I'm thinking: A nu-punk NoFX wannabe band has the gall to mock the "The [definitive article]" band name concept when they're the 15th band to tack a meaningless number on after their name?

I'd have other thoughts but it's 5:30 in the morning (too late to go back to bed and wait for my alarm to go off) and I haven't actually seen the video itself.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

its quite a funny video - they've mimicked the 'Last Nite' vieo right down to where the cymbal stands crash down and no-one cares.

the major difference is SUm 41 are still ludicrously hyperactive, jumping around like maniacs, whereas The Strokes never quite managed to break into a sweat, god forbid it should mess up their deliberately messy hair

you're right tho, it does seem a bit daft to mock Strokes/Hives when you're churning out such trite psuedo-punk pop yourself, although at least they can play in all fairness and they've got the 'energy' thing (maybe its just me but i get really pissed off with the way Julian just stands rooted to the spot on stage or stumbles around like a diseased quadraped, how about some Iggy acrobatics huh?!) - i suppose it is their attempt to make themselves stand out more...rather like the surprisingly good mock hair-metal 'tribute' at the end of their debut video 'Fat Lip' (it was better than the song it was backing up thats for sure)

Enh. I'm guessing "The New Pollution" did it better.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

just shows that the sum 41 is keepin' it real.
('it' being zany punk rock antics that they always talked about doing back in the scout hall playing day.)

ddd, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Strokes and the Hives, but no one is above being mocked.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't seen the video,so i shouldn't comment,but:
i don't like sum 41 at all
and although i don't really like the "new rock" stuff either,i quite like the strokes
but even though i would be slightly biased towards the people being mocked,i think it sounds like a good idea
it would certainly increase my respect for sum 41
i mean come on,they're not expecting anyone to take them all thatseriously anyway

robin (robin), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The pastiche heavy metal songs that Sum 41 do are great!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Before their stylists and handlers got to them, their idea of a great show was jumping on a trampoline. Backstreet Boys do punk brought to you by the shitty suburb of Ajax. Now they can identify with their choosen target audience by mocking their older brothers bands. Up next they mock Limp Bisquick, Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

greatest. video. ever.
and they make fun of themselves, saying the whole "number band" thing is out, fyi.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the weirdest thing about it is that a band that's gone platinum is mocking far less successful bands. Doesn't that disrupt the food chain?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

and I think the video is sort of auld (Cdn spelling)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the video is grebt! and yeah stevem is OTM, they are like 100x as dynamic and bouncy and active than the strokes in the video

also they are super-cute in their short-sleeved plaid shirts and skinny ties

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Now yr. attacking Sum 41 cos they come from the wrong SUBURB? christ what hipster elitism, of exactly the same form that they poke fun at.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

they come from the wrong SUBURB?

This explains the tribal wars of Costa Mesa versus Newport Beach around here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

They should release WWVII parts 1 & 2.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The video is pretty forgettable, but the beginning of it, with Will Sasso(?) is great. He's pretty dismissive of them as he plays some Island Record honcho.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Led Zeppelins?" Yeah, it's Will Sasso at the beginning and it's my favorite part of the video.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Smoke 'em up, Johnny! *whacks lamp off the desk* I can't see you!

Actually you could turn the video off after the opening comedy bit (not much of a fan of these guys), but for the opening alone it's classic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Now yr. attacking Sum 41 cos they come from the wrong SUBURB? christ what hipster elitism, of exactly the same form that they poke fun at.

I mock them for being from one of the suburbs I've lived in. I also mock them for being every bit as much puppets as Britney and crew. They were crap to start with 4 years ago and still are but now they look cute and make high cool videos.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

less talk about puppets on ILM! More talk about puppetmasters!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean CFNY/MM music committees?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Those old duds, Treble Charger, they created Sum 41. Not a bit of lie.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

And got their friend George to champion it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

the beginning is very funny, the strokes parody fairly dead on

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

video mocks "evil record execs"=video is as stupid as band.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

but it totally doesn't mock stupid record execs, it mocks the concept of keeping it real, surely? It is a broadside against the forces of authenticity!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

if by broadside you mean hips, I concur.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, record execs ARE pretty evil, right Geeta?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure--I learned that much from the "Dre Day" video.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

And "Sugarcube" (yay for Mr. Show)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

PS: Horace is OTM. Reverse player-haterism!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

This (along with that guy on rockcritics.com's Radio On thing who said "listen to Blink-182, listen to the fucking Hives if you have to, but don't listen to The Vines!" or something to that effect) makes me very afraid of the idea that, twenty years from now, kids will be telling me "man, the New Rock Revolution was needed in order to destroy Sum-41 and Blink-182 and all those crappy bands!" since, apparently, they and their demographics are the only ppl in the mainstream who are openly *hostile* towards these bands.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The beginning part is great but the rest of the video is quite a letdown. I guess I was expecting more of a "All The Small Things" Andy Dick-ish snark on The Strokes but all you got was a boring parody. Subtle I guess, but not genius.

Carey, Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

should also be noted that they didn't even TRY to play live.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

smoke 'em up, johnny!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Those old duds, Treble Charger, they created Sum 41. Not a bit of lie.

Although it pains to say anything good about Sum 41, they were not created by Treble Charger (by that, I assume you meant Greg Nori?). They were together for a few years before Greg became involved with them. At best it could be said that Nori helped them evolve beyond being yet-another NOFX/FAT band but they are more responsible for what they've done than anyone else is.

CretanBull (CretanBull), Thursday, 23 January 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
hey, this song is great, the video is good too. soon strokesband gospel will be pervasive
