The Sea and Cake "One Bedroom" C/D or First Thoughts

i really like this actually. for some reason sam prekop's simpering whine over lite-jazz accompaniment makes sense given john mcentire's more driving percussion this time around.

the sea and cake are, of course, completely outmoded and irrelevant as a concept. but i can't help think that they're more relevant in 2003 than they were in 2001 (though less than they were in 1997). am i making any sense? it seems that the musical climate since "Oui" has shifted back in their favour (80's revival, and so on) though their music has actually changed very little.

also interesting to note is the "motorik" feel to some of the tracks. very stereolab-y. the ghost of mary hansen is spooky.

All I've heard is "Oui", and I listen to that CD at 8 am at least twice a week. I've got a soft-spot for that band.

I now must go find this "One Bedroom" of which you speak PRONTO!

i want to hear this cover of 'sound & vision' that ppl have been going on about

I like Prekops solo album as well as Archers solo stuff. I will get this today after work and let you know. I like all the other Sea and Cake albums so I'm fully expecting to like this one as well.

i was fully expecting to be HORRENDOUSLY disappointed, but was mildly, jazzily surprised.

geeta ... the cover of 'sound and vision' is indeed quite good. my brother listened to 'one bedroom' yesterday and said it was is favourite track on the disc. he didn't even know it was a bowie cover.

I dunno, revving up the tempo is definitely a good move but it's gonna take more than that: there are a lot of records out there that are perfectly lovely and worthwhile but nevertheless don't have a single quality that makes it seem like anyone needs to be listening to them. As the big post-rock "pop" band I always feared the Sea and Cake would get the easiest pass with just making more pretty/pleasant records and I dearly hoped they wouldn't take that route -- but the bubbliness of this one is like a 5% compromise toward doing something new.

The best Sea and Cake thing I've ever heard was a song they played live before the Oui release -- I have no ID for it but don't think it's been on an album -- and it was great because it sort of rocked: big building active groove. John McEntire Eric Claridge Sam Prekop Archer Prewitt if any of you ever google yourselves and find this: please try that instead, it sounds great. Otherwise please break up so Sam can go make solo records and Archer can become a fashion model for Grad School Hotties Monthly.

what they were playing live to open shows on the oui tour was the instrumental track from the biz maybe?

i really like "one bedroom" --ore engaging than "oui" which i thought was kind of stale. o.b. seems a good synthesis of the biz/s.t meets fawn sound.

also if i have to read the words "indie" or "post-rock" in a review of this album again i am going to be sick.

cant everyone just agree that "post-rock" is an inadequate and outmoded term? more slander than anything, it seems to me...

marcg (marcg), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

especially since the sea and cake are really a pop band.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish that they'd do something more in the vein of The Fawn. I thought Oui was a real regression, an admittance of "our fans didn't like The Fawn, gotta win them back."

indeed, tsac are pretty much a pop band. not everyone from chicago has to be described as "post" something.

i really like most bombastic, over-hyphenated descriptions but the same old "indie" or "post-rock" descriptions are lame. sorry to go on about this...

Ceasing to use the term isn't gonna change the fact that everyone's turned on the music. Giving the Sea and Cake the "pop band" exemption is absolutely true but it's absolutely true in the don't-pigeonhold-me sense of saying "Wire weren't actually a punk band." People know what they're being told when someone describes the Sea and Cake as post-rock.

Disappointment for me. I liked the cover of Sound & Vision and the rest is blah. I hate all the electronic blips and bleeps.

nine years pass...

i don't know if i ever really listened to this record before, but it's great. i've been in a real fawn-oui groove recently and one bedroom is a good addition. i like that the vocals and melodies seem more disctinct and up front than usual.

this is nearly my favorite TSAC (I guess The Biz is about equal) and I'm surprised a lot of people didn't like it. kinda disappointed they didn't continue in this direction.

also, does anyone know where the drums from "One Bedroom" are sampled from?
