Godspeed Spinoffs

Okay, so what's the deal here? There's so many of them and I can't keep them straight. Shalabi Effect, A Silver Mt. Zion, what's worth getting and what's drone-rock filler?

arjun (arjun), Thursday, 23 January 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked Do Make Say Think when I saw them live, their last 2 records i've heard and enjoyed, but not as much as their live show.

gygax!, Thursday, 23 January 2003 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

do make say think is not a godspeed spinoff.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit... hah, you know what's funny is that is a common misconception that i was aware of at one point. kill me.

gygax!, Thursday, 23 January 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

best godspeed "spinoff" ever:

the album I have by A Silver Mt. Zion is very good. I enjoy listening to it. It sounds like Godspeed! only with a few less instruments. someone described them as the chamber Godspeed.

I wouldn't bother with Molasses. I bought an album by them and it is boring.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the set fire to flames album, but i'm as surprised as anyone. there's one really nice 10 minute track that sounds kind of like algarnas tradgard or trad gras och stenar (lots of droning strings, vaguely rock cadence) and a bunch of field recording/subtle instrumentation combinations. but i hate just about everything GYBE related i've heard, so take it with a grain of salt.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the first mt zion album, and its much as dv describes it...
i quite like it,although it's nothing spectacular...
haven't heard it in a while though,i must give it another listen...

robin (robin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Fly Pan Am a GYBE! affiliate? I liked them the one time I saw them live -- they sounded like very brisk bluegrass instrumentals transcribed for for rock quintet.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

FPA are indeed GY!BE affiliates ... they even share a member (guitarist roger). FPA's live show now sounds like a piss-take on german microhouse and the clicks'n'Cuts series as heard by a bunch of scruffy no-wavers.

I saw them a couple of months ago when they opened for DMST. Their insane bassist J.S. go-go danced on the merch table for part of DMST's set. man he was trashed. what an amazing show.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

incidentally FPA's album from last year is criminally underrated among the avant set.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like A Silver Mt. Zion- in fact, I like them more than Godspeed proper

insectifly (insectifly), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Shalabi Effect sound interesting, even if GYBE themselves are a bit dull. I think it's because of the purty album covers.

They any good?

YES!

Godspeed You Black Emperor offshoots - Search/Destroy

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Quoting myself:
Shalabi Effect steals a member from GYBE and the album is almost worth buying for the wonderful shot of the Horsehead Nebula alone.
Complete with naming the wrong nebula I think. ASMZ's first album is GREBT!, Exhaust's album is great, yet One Speed Bike falls flat.

I didnt get enough exposure to Set Fire To Flames to form a lasting opinion on it. Nothing special though.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Is the music full-on drone? Any musical relation to GYBE besides a band member?

original bgm, Friday, 24 January 2003 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

More eastern flavoured, less repetition. Haven't listened to the 2nd album (Trial of St Onge) much I must admit. Its a harder listen then GYBE for sure but more musical then say Set Fire To Flames which would be the closest relation of the bands mentioned so far on this thread.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Hanged Up, while not totally a GYBE spin off, is pretty nice, too.

ken taylrr, Friday, 24 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

thx.

original bgm, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
From the post-rock I've heard basically godspeed is the cream of the crop. They have mastered the build-up to explosion.

yeah, so has every thirteen year old boy

i used to really like them

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 4 September 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

a silver mt zion was absolutely phenomenal when i saw them in late july.

Emily B (Emily B), Monday, 4 September 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

how comforting to see my little thread after all these years...

arjun (arjun), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

it's amazing what little staying power godspeed had with me. i liked the first records a bunch when they came out and listened to them a bunch for months and then NEVER listened to them again. i wrote a really positive review of skinny fists and i still have a copy and i never feel compelled to play it. same with the few related things i own. fly pan am and maybe something else. i guess that one trick crescendo rock thing bores me after a while. mono records bore me even more. every damn track the same damn thing. the long trudge to the freakout. soooooo tedious if you aren't in the mood. i actually only bought the godspeed records at the time cuz everyone on the swans e-mail list i was on were so in love with them.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

same here (haha including the swans fans love even!) - played slow riot and skinny fists like crazy at the time, seeing them live + yanqui s.u.x.= air let out the balloon.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

What was their live show like?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

circa 99 = amazing
circa 01 = hey, wait

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

live show = (dead can dance + kronos quartet)/(early sarah mclachlan)

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

i was off the boat by skinny fists, but i still like the first album/ep

soundtracks for the blind = superior

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

it was kinda a funny album to fuck to!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

i saw them in '04 i think and was completely unimpressed. to be fair, the six dollar heinekens might have had something to do with it.

i open up my wallet and it's full of blood.

arjun (arjun), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

what's another good band featuring a string quartet? i think of various artists that have worked with the kronos quartet, but what about some other examples? where a quartet was a regular part of the band, not just featured on an album or a few songs.

Emily B (Emily B), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe no one's mentioned how much better a silver mt. zion + tra la la orchestra + friends + delay pedals would be without the singing, or I guess with a different singer. And I like a silver mt. zion + etc. a lot.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

"13 angels standing guard 'round the side of your bed" remains one of my favorite songs ever, and a silver mt. zion's zenith, I think.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

I still think first Godspeed album is amazing. I have more, but that's all I need. More tape stuff on that, seems more manipulated, which I like better. "Sunshine & Gasoline" 7-inch is also excellent. I saw them in '00 I think and it was v. powerful.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe no one's mentioned how much better a silver mt. zion + tra la la orchestra + friends + delay pedals would be without the singing

This is why their second album was their best (lots of noise, not too much singing) but it's also their most Godspeed-y album so I can see why some people wouldn't like it.

They hit their stride on their most recent (4th album) as far as singing goes, i.e. focusing on mantra-like chants rather than 15-minute prog epics + bad harmonizing.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

i thought that the moya / bbf3 12" was the best... i can't remember it's name. most concise while still allowing them some space to strut their stuff.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

Saw Silver Mount Zion the other day in Toronto. Never been so bored in my life.

Some girl in the crowd shouted "thank you for coming", in a way you'd think ASMZ were like the second coming or something. I wanted to strangle her with her matted, but presumably corporation free hair.

Shawnoftheshed (xtrawidth), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

so you fantasize about strangling women?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

Porphyria's Lover finally has a worthy sequel.

Obvious Ninja (Haberdager), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Some of my friends saw a Silver Mount Zion recently and one of them literally vomited because it was so loud.
