New Ramones "tribute" album

I'm in shock.

U2, Garbage, Chilli Peppers, Eddie (spit) Vedder, Pete Yorn, Rob Zombie, Rancid, Green Day, Offspring, Metalllica, Rooney (who he?), Marilyn Manson, Pretenders, Kiss....

If ever there was a line-up invented for the 1975 punks - the Ramones, duh - to destroy, this is it. What's going on? Is this some fucking corporate asshole cokehead marketing man's idea of a joke up at Sony?

Because I'm not fucking laughing.

Jerry (Jerry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

True. A yawnsome line-up to be sure. Doubt it'll sell especially well either.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Jerry, if this thread is any indication, the Ramones don't really have much hope anymore. But, to paraphrase what someone else recently pointed out to me, what has damaged The Ramones as a "brand" more, stuff like this or the long string of shitty albums they crapped out through the 80s and 90s?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, I think Green Day deserves more credit than they get.
But the rest of the bands, dear effing lord. The best hope is that Rooney is Andy and not Mickey.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

(For what it's worth, I'm not laughing either, but whatever. The 1975 punks would probably destroy me, too. Let U2 have their fun, it'll be easy enough for us to ignore.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It'd be better if it was Wayne.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Eeeek....Sean linking the "Thread of Dread"!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The only one I'm really surprised at is Kiss. IIRC, Jerry, Rob Zombie was the one coordinating this thing from the start, so you can blame him if you like. As it is, I'm just shrugging and wondering where Shania is. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

.. not too sure why we need anybody to cover Ramones songs.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry for linking that, but there's a lot of good talk there about what, precisely, the Ramones mean these days in terms of ...oh, let's call it "legacy". As it stands, I think there are far worse artists out there who could be on this compilation instead. At the very best, this one will be clogging delete bins by this time next year, and they're probably going to lose money by the bucket paying the artists for their appearance.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Ramones as music VS Ramones as brand

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that Andy Rooney on there? Or Mickey Rooney? If it's either, then classic.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

is it really a shock? the Ramones are pretty much universally revered, and if someone wants to gather together the most salable names and pump out something that might get some publicity for them and promote the 'legacy', then so be it. and honestly, i'd like to hear some of these tracks (especially U2) just out of sheer curiousity of how they'd sound playing this material.

heard Rancid's "Sheena" on the radio the other day and was shocked at how weak it was. i mean, their whole thing is being these oi! punks, you'd think they'd have a song like that down to a friggin' science, but they couldn't even sing the damn chorus right, the phrasing is all wrong.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i don't get why this is shocking at all. i'd actually be interested in hearing some of these covers.

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not a shock - it's just I got sent a copy of the album this morning and man it sucks. Tom Waits honourable mention aside (which he gets away with by sounding like a drunken bum who's just staggered into a rock club where a Ramones track is playing on a slightly muted jukebox).

I deny your charge that the Ramones entire Eighties output was dire - the Spector album, for Gawdsakes - but yes, of course, they devalued their own worth immensely with the "tribute band" line up during the Nineties.

You wanna HEAR another Chilli Peppers track Geeta??! Well, to each their own...

No shock, just sad. Very sad. What a fucking tribute for Joey...

Jerry (Jerry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tribute albums are always lame, but this one sounds interesting just because it's hard to imagine any of these artists (except the 90s "punk" bands and the Pretenders) doing a Ramones song. I mean, U2? What the hell?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I almost said "Well, as long as it's not something like 'Beat on the Brat,' they could maybe get away with it," and then I looked it up and THAT'S WHAT IT IS!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, jerry, i could do without hearing the chili peppers cover, but i am interested in hearing how metallica handles their cover. i want to hear the kiss cover, too.

also i would assume (tho i don't like U2 much) that bono's mega-histrionic wail would make whatever they covered by the ramones unintentionally super-funny.

i dunno, i'm viewing this as a comedy record.

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I deny your charge that the Ramones entire Eighties output was dire - the Spector album, for Gawdsakes

Well, I never said the ENTIRE eighties...that Spector album is great, and there are some good moments on most of the rest of them too. But still.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha, u2 covers 'beat on the brat'!! see, that's pure comedy right there! bono probably thinks he's singing about the edge!

"The only one I'm really surprised at is Kiss"

That doesn't surprise me, really. I mean, let's look at the facts:

(1) Both bands are from New York City.
(2) Both bands continually celebrate "rock'n'roll".
(3) Both bands subscribe to a visual aesthetic of uniformity.
(4) Both bands feature Jewish lead singers.
(5) Both bands suffered severe internal strife and attrition, yet insisted on keeping up a united public front despite the inner acrimony.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm thinking more in the sense that I'd be surprised if they knew who they were. ;-)

"A band from New York that didn't sell anywhere as big as us? And you want us to cover them? GIDOUDDAHERE!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, God. James Hetfield singing "then I took out my razor blade/and I did what God forbade". Hysterical. The Tom Waits cover might be interesting, though.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 23 January 2003 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh.. though I think the choice of songs covered is good, I'm afraid to hear about half of these. Skip this (like most of you weren't going to already...) and get Joey Ramone's solo that came out last year... the perfect and proper end to the Ramones.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, "53rd & Third" is an odd choice for Metallica.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually interested in hearing the Garbage one

dave q, Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the Ramones DID cover Tom Waits, so he deserves to be there.
Weren't they doing "Where the Streets Have No Name" on their 94 tour? So there's U2.

I think Bono is to dead punks what Elton John is to dead blondes.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 January 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to hear the Waits one, and I'd very much like not to hear the rest. I am disappointed and shocked that Shania Twain isn't contributing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my God! i can't wait til I hear Metallica's song!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Bono is to dead punks what Elton John is to dead blondes.

hahahaha!!

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The Tom Waits cover IS YOUR NEW GOD.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Included on the first 100 000 copies? Do tribute albums normally outsell the band being feted?

Vic Funk, Friday, 24 January 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

May have been posted already, but search didn't yield anything:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVJfErLlyLI

Needs the visuals, so probably wouldn't work on a tribute album.
