Voices everyone likes

For girls I'd like to suggest Liz Fraser and Billie Holiday.

For boys I'd guess everybody would love John Lennon and Leonard Cohen. Maybe Prince? Or Lou Reed?

I think it will be impossible to find voices everyone likes. Like with the songs...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Waits?

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Only girls like Billy Holiday? Boys like sex too!
Leonard Cohen's not for everyone, nor is Lou.

Haven't met anyone yet ? boy or girl ? who doesn't love Etta James. She's got the soft, sexy voice for ballads and the growl for everything else. Lots of people have done "I Just Want to Make Love to You," but her version tops them all.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

surely everyone likes mark e smith?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know Etta James. But I love "I Just Want to Make Love to You". Bo Diddley, wasn't it?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Sinatra's got a pretty wide appeal. I know plenty of boys (and girls - why does gender figure into this at all, tho?) who don't like Leonard Cohen. And I think Lou Reed's voice is pretty shit, much as I love a lot of his music.

My personal fave nominee: Sam Cooke.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Amazingly, a lot of people hate Tom Waits.

Jeff Buckley?

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

other possibles:

David Bowie
Jimmy Cliff
Michael Jackson (up to 1989)
Freddy Mercury

Missy Elliott
PJ Harvey
Alison Goldfrapp
Kate Bush

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ew, Jeff Buckley is such a one-trick pony. So histrionic... pre-child-molesting-nosejob-insanity-Michael Jackson is a pretty good nominee tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like Liz Fraser, John Lennon or Freddy Mercury. I like the others mentioned. The idea that boys and girls like entirely different voices seems contentious, at the very least.

How about Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

sarah vaughan?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

SARAH VAUGHN!!!

Also, Ella Fitzgerald and Placido Domingo.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's inevitable it'll boil down to some soul singers - easily the most broadly appealing.

Marvin Gaye?

Gris Gris Pinball, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck the opera singer jeff buckley, fuck soul singers. sorry but these are definitely no choices i will ever accept.

pj harvey is a good choice i'd guess. her voice is weird (masculine in a way) but not annoying.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone dislike Ray Davies' voice?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

"fuck the opera singer jeff buckley, fuck soul singers. sorry but these are definitely no choices i will ever accept."

Are we gonna have to disqualify your vote, like when you wouldn't agree about James Brown...? (That *was* you right?)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

This is why there's no such thing as a voice everyone likes.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Because there's 15-year-olds who refuse to listen to music made prior to 1980?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, basically.

(Sorry Alex, I'm not serious. OR AM I???)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

probably Otis and Aretha would be the biggest consensus builders.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, if consensus means "everyone except Alex in Mainhattan".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Jackson (up to 1989)

I'd have to disagree... I've never liked Michael as a singer, weirdness aside.

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Shakey Mo. Pretty hard to imagine anyone really disliking Sam Cooke. That's probably why he was the most popular black singer of his time. Also, Nat King Cole? Hard to imagine anyone disliking his voice, even if they don't like the music.

I hate Tom Waits. Wotta charlatan.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Nat had a beautiful voice (and he was also a big role model for Cooke). He also taught artists of the world a very important lesson: NEVER HAVE CHILDREN.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHA!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

for girls = girls' voices
for boys = boys' voices

sorry my english is crap. and consensus is crap. why did i ask this bloody question?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Michael Jackson's voice.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex your choices seem fine but reversed gender wise.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I see, not "which voices do boys/girls like" but rather which singers of each gender are the most widely appealing.

Still mystified as to how alex in manhattan heard Billie Holiday. Did she put out a posthumous rap record in '85 or something?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Billie Holiday is a strange fruit hanging on a poplar tree, Shakey. What was your question?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Tom Waits. Wotta charlatan.

most post 1963 non jazz/opera singers are charlatans though, aren't they? the old john lydon/michael bolton debate?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

just writing those words i understood the meaning of the name of this blog. thank you billie.

Patsy Cline?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

gaz, not to make this a TW thread ... but I just never liked either of his musical phases: the bourbon-soaked barfly crooner or the avant-garde Beefheartian hipster. And I never cared for the sound of his voice.

But the answer to your question is probably yes.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Al Green. Except Dan's right, there's no such thing as a voice everyone likes.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Except mine, of course.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't propose Joni Mitchell as I know Dr. C doesn't like her. But in the end the most beautiful voice is hers...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 23 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't remember their hard-to-spell Icelandic names but the twins from Mum have my favorite voices.

Also like Alison Goldfrapp, Mia Doi Todd, Laetitia Sadier, Bill Callahan, Lee Ranaldo, and Beth Gibbons.

Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed???

Does anyone dislike Cee-Lo? LL Cool J? Chuck D? ODB? Donna Summer? Iggy Pop?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 24 January 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

LL Cool J's voice is fine, but his raps are getting a bit stale these days, no?

"Paradise is.....very nice" Crap!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 January 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOATHE Joni Mitchell's directionless warble.
I know what you mean, Alex. But she only warbles on the early records. Try Hejira or The Hissing of Summer Lawns where she has a rather "deep" voice. Pure beauty.

And Tom, I can't believe that you don't like Liz Fraser and that you can't spell her name. Her voice is absolutely untouchable.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 24 January 2003 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Arlene Smith of the Chantels (best voice in rock bar none) and Chuck D seem like pretty good candidates.

Kurt Cobain's voice is my favorite thing about Nirvana but I suppose that'd get shot down fairly quickly.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 24 January 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant my Gwen Stefani in an "Everyone here adores Thom Yorke's voice right?" kind of tone.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 24 January 2003 07:23 (twenty-three years ago)

John Cale, Richard Thompson, John Doe
Kate Pierson, Karen Carpenter, Kendra Smith
