If You're A Fan...

and you have the means and opportunity to buy a record by artist/band of which of you are a fan, and you download for free anyway, are you really a fan? I mean, you're not supporting the artist/band, you're not helping to ensure that they will be able to make more music.
I can understand downloading stuff y're casually interested in, or if your income is limited, but if you're a FAN?
This is all academic, since my computer is such an old wreck, it's actually made from salvaged parts of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Duh - Yeah. Just because you don't buy the artists product doesn't mean you're not a "fan". I've never bought a Monet, doesn't mean I don't like him.

One of the problems I've got with buying stuff by an artist is I find the "album" and the "single" or "E.P." arbitary forms that more often than not do the artist justice. I'll decide what I like and don't like and how I want to listen to it thankyou. Music product at the moment doesn't give me this option, downloading does. For me that is a bigger issue than wether I'm paying for it or not.

Well, I'm a fan of music in general, so I don't make copies of cd's at all. I download some mp3, but usually only b-sides and rare tracks (hard to find, even if I wanted to spend money on it). Sometimes I search for mp3s from an artist / band I don’t know, and if I like it, I’ll end up buying it anyway. It’s pricey, but I’m proud of my collection. ;)

It's like doing all your shopping at WalMart and then wondering why Main Street is all boarded up. In this society (like it or not), you change the world everytime you spend a dollar.

"I've never bought a Monet, doesn't mean I don't like him."

Yeah, and anyway Monet and the White Strokes are doing fine in their careers and don't need your help. But I distinguish between being a fan and being a supporter (patron?) of artists I like but aren't making money doing what they do. If an artist you like is on tour playing the small club in your town, you should go and buy the album from her directly. If the club's half empty, buy a couple tee shirts too.

As a rocko-journo, I always make a point of buying a shirt and 7"s from bands I like when I see them. Cuz I get their CD free and 95% of the time I don't pay to get in, but I still want that connection as a fan, when I am a fan.

I usually do buy CD albums - when I (finally!) get broadband this might change I suppose but I still use MP3s to test out records. If I like a record I try to do my best to promote it a bit on my website and message boards as well as buying it myself.
