Justin Timberlake playing with the Flaming Lips on TOTP tonight.

So, is it gonna be a classic top of the pops moment, or a cynical marketing ploy by Timberlakes managment?

[email protected]___, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

actually?
what are they going to play?
do they not mime on top of the pops anyway?

robin (robin), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lips have been one of my favorite bands for ages, but Justified is a better record than Yoshimi, hands down. I'm curious to hear what this performance will be like. Wayne doing Timbaland's parts in "Cry Me a River" in his pained croak would be great!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think hes sposed to be "playing" bass along to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 1..

[email protected]___, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Really? Huh. My interest was piqued by Yancey's idea, but...

Jeff W, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I might have to watch this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

This is sad (and kinda pathetic). It doesn't have anything to do with being creative or making music and has everything to do with exploiting each others' images and markets.

I mean, has anyone ever even *heard* Timberlake "play" bass? Don't the Lips already have a fucking bass player?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lips have Michael Ivins who didn't play a single note on Yoshimi.

And how is it sad and pathetic? Maybe it has to do with having fun! DO YOU HATE FUN?!?!?!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it would be cool if there was some sort of collaboration, but if its just timberlake playing bass on an existing track, presumably exactly the same as it is on the recorded version, whats the point?

robin (robin), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

ITS TOTP PEOPLE!!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Justin's Robbie-at-Glastonbury moment, eek!

(That Lips' single was the worst single I'd heard in months btw. Then a mere 60 minutes later I heard the David Sneddon one which is even worse. I'm not touching TOTP with a bargepole this week.)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard a note from yoshimi (even tho' sean gave me a CDR of it, and part of the reason is because there's so much talk abt this album that i just want to be able to forget it but it hasn't happened yet).

so if i remember it i shall.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

"Maybe it has to do with having fun! DO YOU HATE FUN?!?!?! "

Justin Timberlake is no Andrew WK.

Come on, this is a crap idea - do you really think they're going to do something interesting with that song?!? (A song I don't even like, btw?)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 January 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no idea. I've never seen TOTP and I have no clue what these folks would do together.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

But you *do* have a clue! They've said exactly what they are going to do - have Timberlake play bass on "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"!!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

D-U-M-B

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 January 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

No, jk said that.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I've changed my mind again. Justin in a dolphin suit = compulsive viewing.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

DO YOU HATE FUN?!?!?!

No, just Justin.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it has to do with having fun! DO YOU HATE FUN?!?!?!

Who died and made you the arbiter of fun, anyway?

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, if Timb can hold da pocket, who's complainin'? Not me!

Hell, maybe he's finding his true calling in life...I'd much rather we have Justin-the-too-attractive-bass-player than Justin-the-Michael-Jackson-impersonator.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Nell Carter, hstencil.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd rather watch "Gimme A Break" than listen to Justin Timberlake. And that's saying a lot.

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey = OTM.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

For the record, I don't have a problem with this, on either Justin's or the Flaming Lips' part. I DO have a problem with somebody else telling other people that they're no fun just 'cause they disagree. It's a common ILM attribute, and it annoys the fuck out of me (not that I don't do annoying things too, but y'know).

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:25 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's hilarious!

And the fact that you don't find it funny, well...

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(ducks)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny to a degree, but I guess I would care more if I lived in the UK and was able to see it. Or if I cared much about either.

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Have a sense of humor hstencil... Yes, I really think that SMC's lack of interest in seeing Justin Timberlake and the Flaming Lips perform together means he's a joyless lame-o. Of course not! It's a farging joke!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Joke or not, it's still fucking grating.

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna see a FITE! GRRRR!

Take this into the steel-cage, gentlemen!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a lover, not a fighter.

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

justin + flaming lips want to upset the music snobs by appearing together. and it looks like its working!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure Justin & the Flaming Lips lie awake at night, sweating, while worrying what "music snobs" care about.

hstencil, Friday, 24 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

they are obviously appearing together to get a reaction out of the uptight. and actually, yes. i can picture wayne coyne lying awake at night thinking about music snobs!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The irony of the Flaming Lips being total popists is that they're the rockist's band of choice!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they just like each other. They looked homely, like acorns look homely in trees. Comfortable. The two best (for my money) male pop stars were on the same show tonight. And it was on at the same time as TOTP. And on the same channel. Daniel Bedingfield is the most consistently sexy, hurt, soul-swapped singer alive. JT is wonderful too with his lacking-our-consent attempts at hegemony, or to put it another way you'll not understand, his futile attempts at invisibility by putting the thing we oppose right in front of us make him really interesting, to me.

You should've watched this for Daniel alone Tom. Was Wayne Coyne an octave flat? Or do my ears have too high expectations?

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

blown away by Busted, I must say.

Justin played bass.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom Passantino is right: Busted are the Dum Dums, with crucial differences. Busted look good. And. Busted don't write their own songs (as far as I'm aware) so this means they have access to more than one decent songwriter so they can choose the good ones from, say, possibly, a batch of 5 presented to them. Whereas the Dum Dums only had the main guy (Danny?) as songwriter so had less options -> less good tunes (no good tunes).

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin played bass.

Justin Da Mack, stealin' his bandmates' luverz!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Every time I think of Busted I think of jel: I can imagine jel in Busted. You could replace the one that isn't Nick Nairn or Ronan F1tzg3r4ld (ie the posh one). Though the posh one is the good one.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Flaming Lips was on Conan OBrien a few weeks ago. Ted Danson sat in with them on that performance. He played triangle.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

that was fairly low key and pointless,i have to say, although the idea of it is great...
as for daniel beddingfield,i was less than impressed...

robin (robin), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(ha! thanks cozen! I could be the drummer!)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

shania twain/ramones= flaming lips/timberlake. don't you ppl ever learn anything.

(I missed BTW, spent too long at tower recs looking around)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess you guys haven't heard the Lips' cover of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" then? (I'm being completely serious.)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Those guys will cover anything (usually horribly -- I downloaded this comp of their covers mainly because I wanted to hear them doing Flock of Seagulls songs and it was all so horrible that I actually wished they would at least be ironic about it).

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

did this really happen?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I have heard that Donut! I'm sure it was on some free CD I got, oh yeah, I think it might've been the one that came with the first issue of X-Ray.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got the Flaming Lips "Can't Get..." track (free with X-Ray magazine) - it is less than impressive.

(nabitsuh - you were right re:modern-retro line of rock clothing on the Shania thread - the Justin MC5 T (which preceded Shania)? It's a new line of Levi's due out soon.)

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin is slumming.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

He's half as hot as you, and twice as cool as me. I was listening to "OK Computer" yesterday ("yeah, I think I can listen to the Smiths again now" syndrome kicked in) and I was thinking about MelCaramel and how it sounds like England swallowing itself whole.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"Can't Get" was recorded live on KEXP Seattle, and since it's my morning clock radio station, I've heard it more times than I can think of. For the Lips hataz, you will especially hate this one, as it accentuates Wayne's screechy out of tune voice more than anything other Lips recording ever.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

screechy 'out of tune' voice= classic!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

im not a lips hata but that kylie cover is UNLISTENABLE but not as bad as their version of knives out

chaki (chaki), Friday, 24 January 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Is no one else reminded of John Peel pretending to play mandolin on Rod Stewart's TOTP appearance doing You Wear It Well? (Possibly not, because that is 30 years ago = these people weren't born yet...)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I've seen that. He sat on the edge of the stage? Wasn't it a lute?

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

so have I. we have TOTP2 martin.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 January 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

.... man...

I really like the Lips. Why are they doing anything with that doofus?

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope Coyne remembers to wear his Apple shirt.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Not a big fan of either but I crawled out of my sickbed and there it was. Glorious. Musically inept (the whole thing, not just Justin - they were live, not miming as is TOTP norm) and, yes, I think Wayne was flat for the most part, except when he was sharp, but... it was sweet, touching, it made me feel less sick.

But the Kylie cover still sucks.

richard stacey (analog75), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I found it difficult to decide which out of Flaming Lips, Busted, Sneddon, Feeder or the Libertines I detested the most. I think Busted just shaded it. Bedingfield was good. That song is great, even in an
acoustic version.

David (David), Saturday, 25 January 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

If by "even" you slipped and meant to say "goddam especially" then.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 25 January 2003 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

No I meant 'even'. I don't like acoustic versions - at least not on TOTP.

David (David), Saturday, 25 January 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

the Kylie cover does suck but I'm 200% w/Yancey on this one.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 25 January 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it would've been really fun actually, and I'm gutted I missed it. Especially as I sat through 45 minutes of this

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 25 January 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Look how cool that link is, eh? I'm so proud. Wow. I feel like God now, squeezing whole links in tiny words! Yay html!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 25 January 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

That Lips' single was the worst single I'd heard in months btw

Come on, Tom. That new Richard Ashcroft thing is the worst single of the millennium so far and will take some beating.

Venga, Saturday, 25 January 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoyed the Lips' TOTP performance, but Tom is right - the song is terrible! BUT THAT FEEDER SONG IS TEN TIMES WORSE!

That's abt the 4th time Bedingfield's done "If You're Not The One" on TOTP (and I don't think any have been repeats either) - last night's was the lamest performance yet, but still 10 times better than anything else on the show.

I enjoyed Busted. And Jaimeson. Punjabi MC sang really well.

The Libertines were as good as they can hope to be (but as good as I'd hoped they might be, if you see what I mean).

Sneddon did his song better a few weeks ago. Came over as a very poor singer this time.

Jeff W, Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

busted were GREAT!! i missed the lips completely, i wz watching zoe tate giving her baby away on emmerdale (or possibly the elimination of the warthog in robot wars)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard a live version of the FL single the other day, which was miles better. I thought I didn't like the Flaming Lips, but I've just remembered that I really liked a tune called Waterbug from a few years back.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Martin, that's the only Flaming Lips track that I like! It's wonderful! "And he calls up, the insects he commands and the waterbugs...attack the policeman".

I didn't think I liked UK Garage, but the Jamieson record was the best thing on TOTP last night by far!

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 25 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I turned off the Ashcroft single after 2 bars Venga so I can't be said to have heard it.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 26 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

does anyone think it's funny hoe us popsits defend the popstars dawn-to-dusk but the popstarss are the biggests rockists going?

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i posted that drunk. i proof read it twice, too.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The Flaming Lips are an acquired taste I suppose...I thought EVERYONE loved them!!! I sure do. At first i thought it was a real dumb idea to play with that timberland guy...but after seeing it...it made me smile...so i guess its cool after all

Tony Danza, Saturday, 1 February 2003 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Tony Danza,

I must say that I admire your work. Who's the Boss? is one of the best series about tit for tat and hitching your wagon to a star.
