music suited to particular spaces of time

I'm getting the train from Bray to Dublin, yah. I'm meeeting a friend in town, so it's about 1 hr 10 mins from my house to the meeting place, so I'm thinking I'll play disc 1 of Aphex Twin's SAW Vol 2 on the way. I'm halfway through the train journey, and the friend rings me, and she's on the train behind me. So I sez I'll get off the train I'm on, and meet her on the other one. So I get off, and there's 10 mins til her train arrives.

With 10 mins til I have to stop litening to music, SAW vol 2 suddenly seems less appetising. So I slip on the Posies "Frosting on the Beater" - still time to hear those fantastic 3 opening tracks.

So, why did SAW vol2 lose its appeal when the listening time changed Perhaps its nothing more than the old 'some-recs-have-to-be-heard-in-their-entirety-others-you-can-dip-into' deal, but perhaps not. After all, I'd still be going ahead with the 'listening-to-in-its-enirety", just stopping at an earlier stage than expected. Not the same thing as plucking random tracks from an lp, and putting them in an unappetising context on a home-made comp. Perhaps some music needs to unfurl over the course of time. And perhaps some songs are better at providing a quick musical-pick-me-up when there's only a short space of time to listen to it in.

Eh, not sure what my question is...tell me if you've had similar experiences, where recs are more suited to a particular space of time for listening.

An example to better illustrate it - is the music you listen to when you have a whole day off the same/different to the music you listen to when you have to head out to work in an hour? What are the differences, if any?

When I was doing a radio show at college I used to put on 12-15 min. Orb tracks so that I would have enough time to take a crap before cuing up the next song.

Also, when I wanted to have a cigarette I'd make sure and find a good seven-minute thumper.

Starting the show off, though, I'd try and pick as many short & sweet numbers as I could to grab people's attention and alert them to the fact that it was My Turn! and make it very clear that were not going to be any rock drums for the next two hours.

I remember when I used to drive a bus in college, on the first warm day of spring when I would have to drive on the weekend I would play Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Something about those songs made driving around in circles on a Sunday appealing.

My bathroom break songs when I had my college show were always Dump's (no pun intended) "International Airport" or "Little Johnny Jewel".

For me, wit SAW vol.2, if i find it unappetising, it 's because the decadence i was yearnin for when i initially put it on is seen as retrospectively hollow and i think that it was too much a case of peddling a shtick rather than listening for pleasure (which is almost never the case wit that album even if it's a stereotypical choice for that kind of posing).

The major problem wit dee album is that it's v. gd for complementing (the mild and actually not) insanity and when it doesn't appeal for listening (wen u actuallly want to listen to it in its entirety) u reech where even the halfassed decadence archetype doesn't fit the bill for indulging in mind explosion perhaps? )that's really fucking lame actually but if it helps u in understanding that last sentence then the world is fine) then u reach a new, not very terrifying level boredomanity which is a shit word i think you'll agree.

But Killian, didn't u only buy it about 2 seconds ago? If u feel like that straight away then yr life is ruined/unless u meagrely don't get the inconceivable charm of track 5, disc 1. If u eventually do so then life will hopefully b expanded to dimensions interested and/or ruined. (ruined = definitely pretentious)

SAW2 only lost it's charm in the context of "I have to stop listening in 10 minutes." And yes, I only bought it two seconds ago. It was unappetising in a certain situation, or taken in a certain quantity - not a case of being entirely bored with it already.
