I always enjoyed their radio singles and the Dominion Road cassingle was the first tape I ever bought. Am I just nostalgic or were they rather good? The Muttonbirds S/D?

ps is there a thread discussing BDO Auckland anywhere? I had fun, did anyone here go?

I quite like them, despite their ubiquity in NZ and the last couple of albums not being so pop-tastic and radio friendly.A lot of stuff thats just feh though.

search: anchor me, heater, in my room, nature, and their cover of don't fear the reaper. you know, all the singles.

All I know is that here in the states I saw one of them playing in Bic Runga'a band..Proceed with caution...

"Anchor Me", for me = a gorgeous summer afternoon eight years ago: a small festival stage, an unexpectedly moving tune from an unknown-to-me-band, the instantly memorable chorus. sounded pretty byrds-ian. can't recall what else they played. have never heard any of their records.

they're awful, young men singing like middle aged men. or maybe they are old, i dunno, i was anxious to hear them for a long time and then i did, oops.

I really like the first two albums, some good lyrics and a feeling of (I think) cool grey days, things unspoken, a touch of ominousness. Faves: "A Thing Well Made", "White Valiant", "Too Close To The Sun". Envy Of Angels had a few good songs, but a lot of boring-in-their-obviousness ones. It sounded from reviews that they were continuing in the commercial-slick MOR direction so I decided not to get any more albums (so can't comment further).

keith they ARE old men! older than me.
yeah shitty cover of "don't fear the reaper", shitty cover of the fourmyula's "Nature " (NZ 60s classic) , i can't remember anything else.

They ARE old men - or at least Don McGlashan is. He was in Blam Blam Blan (1980/81) who released, amongst other things, "There Is No Depression In New Zealand", then in The Front Lawn. The Muttonbirds first appeared mid-90s I think.

"no depression in NZ" is just sort of annoying but 1 Blam Blam Blam song is (i realised when i heard it on the National Programme a few wks ago) really great, "Don't Fight It Marsha". hey i saw that band 1x! 'cause i'm pretty old too.

twelve years pass...

Love this band so much. Don McGlashan is coming out with a new album, "Lucky Stars". He's put out a couple of other outstanding solo albums, too. Time to dive into it all again...
