mark s (mark s), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

jay-z: my hero!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Wohoo.

, Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

:'(

geeta, Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

but, I don't think he'll quit! He'll make a comeback album with lots of songs about how he was too good to quit and how the rap world need him and stuff! (I think this will be a good thing, jay-z is cool)

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 25 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I just listened to Reasonable Doubt earlier this week and although I'm not a fan of the subject matter -- practically every single track save "D'evils", "Regrets", "22 Two's" and the "Can I Live" tracks fulfilled my lowerered expectations about his 'yay for materialism, also might I remind you of the record label I am affiliated with? It is called Roc-A-Fella!' tendencies, I have to admit that he is really fucking good. Granted, being good at rhyming about things that irritate me isn't going to make me a fan, but at least I can feel safe in admitting that he's skilled as a motherfucker. And the beats he rhymes over -- save "Ain't No N----"'s really distinct (and tired) "Seven Minutes of Funk" break that was already used by Grandmaster Flash and EPMD and the Alkaholiks -- are fucking choice. Bohannon's "Save Their Souls", Isaac Hayes' "The Look Of Love", wherever those strings and beats on "Bring It On" come from... I was really starting to feel the atmosphere when I was walking down the street during a snowfall.

So yeah, Nas will probably gloat and lots of people will feel awful, but I guess he's already assembled a pretty significant discography for himself. Maybe he's just another one of those "I've done everything, now what?" cases, like... uh, Captain Beefheart or something.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

which means he will take up painting!

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

very interesting he's writing a book. writing (of a different kind) being his talent and all. will there be a ghostwriter? whom?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Mad Skillz?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It shouldn't be hard for him to retire. He already sounds like he's sitting in a laz-e-boy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 25 January 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

in a Guardian interview he claims he challenged Nas to a pay-per-view rap duel followed by 3 bout boxing match (i'm sure this has been well documented on ILM but i just couldnt be bothered with those epic battle threads)...i think they should have both been forced to do this, THEN retire - not a fan of either meself

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 25 January 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I can think of many others that should follow in his footsteps....

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 25 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm really looking forward to the prospect of a book from Shawn...the article he wrote about his career in the recent issue of Vibe was great... http://launch.yahoo.com/vibe/content.asp?id=120

but Jay's last album = quitting music biz? puh-leeze. Roc-a-fella is more chock full of other talent ready to blow up than ever, i know he's not walking away from that. I'd be surprised if he didn't end up just guesting on even more other people's records.

let us not forget that he made this threat with pretty much every album up through Vol. 3, and only in the past couple years just settled down and stopped making empty promises about taking it easy. still, i can understand his feeling about having done pretty much all there is to do and wanting to try something else, even if i'm not sure he can stick to it...

i can't help but think of the whole idea as very sad, though, the end of an era. for 5 or 6 years now, he's been one of my favorite rappers and i've consistently been amazed at his ability to hang in there and keep surprising...i mean, practically everyone in the game falls off pretty quickly after hitting it big, but he really did take it to another level.

he's talked about The Black Album being a "prequel" to Reasonable Doubt, rhyming from the P.O.V. of his life pre-fame, which could either be really awesome or really eh. but i definitely look forward to it. and with Prince!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 26 January 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

the cat must have woke up in a haze of Bling and shitty Champagne and said "shit, I really can't MC"

Hayden (Hayden), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

nate i also heard "reasonable doubt" for the first time recently and had much the same reaction! except i was wondering if an pre-bling, pre-timbaland semi-'conscious' (you know what i mean) jay-z'd interest me. he did.

and he's obv not quitting for real. he's announced this before, hasn't he?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 26 January 2003 12:15 (twenty-three years ago)

jay-z is the top boy. he can say what he wants and people will listen.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

We'll see if he has the attention span for a full book, I mean the guy is too lazy to actually work on his lyrics.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Monday, 27 January 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopefully it will be titled "I Am Me Jay-Z Retiree 2003 The Rock Dynasty Ultra Shawn Carter Hova" by Shawn Carter with Norman Mailer.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

This'll be great. If his book does as well as the DMX bio, we can all visit him in his cardboard box!

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Oh well, there are other fish in the sea.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever. still the KONY, easy

name me some fish nordic...

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Uuuuuh. AZ is working on new material. I think he needs a good producer.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

black album coming soon!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Ok, what is this Jay-Z - "The Return" crap on Rocafella's site?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

He's going to assume the kingship in Minas Tirith.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, thank God.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But Luda got his finger bit off.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile, Dizzee and Mike Skinner were exchanging japes with Liljonbeard of Crunkorn Forest

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what rhymes with "cynicism"?

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Innervisions

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Would his return album BE on Rocafella though? is he contractually obligated to roc-a-fella anymore? Is Dame? Does Roc-a-fella exist?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not coming back already is he? I mean, I love the Jigga-man, but that wouldn't be much of a build-up.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 5 May 2005 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

At least now I won't have to start my "Is Jay-Z Really Returning, Ever?" thread.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

JAY-Z IS BACK, WITH HIS FIRST NEW ALBUM IN OVER A YEAR.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hope he doesn't. Dropping the Black Album and backing out it as the best rapper alive, nigga ask about him, was super classy and I don't want him to screw it up.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

'the return' was on 'best of both worlds', no?

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, there's that Linkin Park album already (yes yes, I know the origins but still).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Has it really been a year since Collision Course?

(x-post)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Frankly The Return should have come three days after The Black Album

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently it is from "Unfinished Business" (2004's not-anticpated follow-up to "Best of Both Worlds")

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohhhhhhhhhh! Talk about out of the loop.

They put it under "new music" with that new Kanye "Diamonds" track, so I was afeared.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

tho if you listen to that "dear summer" track on lemon-red.blogspot.com, you can hear he's itching to get back (well, more back) in the game.

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of which, my younger brother, who is much more into hip-hop than I am, told me about a year ago that Jay-Z was going to come back as Sean Carter and change up his style -- lose the super-criminal persona and go more positive. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to sound clips from Unfinished Business last night (shit I should have reconized "The Return" from that). It sounded pretty fun! But then I'm in a real Kells mood.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

good god I hope he stays the hell out of it xpost

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 5 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that sounds horrible. "go more positive"!?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well, if there's two things we don't need they're chinks in the shitty, boring rap mainstream circa 2005 or threats to our black-superman fantasy lives

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well, if there's two things we don't need they're chinks in the shitty, boring rap mainstream circa 2005

miccio (miccio), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

My guess is: my brother is wrong.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

actually not really, Hurting, that was a pretty popular rumor about a year ago, that he was going to leave Def Jam and release records on another label as "Shawn Carter" (his birth name, not Sean). but then he became prez of DJ instead (which is pretty close to my prediction upthread that even if he stops making records he'd stay pretty involved in the music biz).

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard the rumor myself, too -- i guess being prez of DJ may trump a new record (as "shawn carter" or otherwise).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I really thought him becoming president of Def Jam was pretty awesome and exciting and made me optimistic about what else he can accomplish. but then, so far he seems to be using his power mostly to make his buddies (Bleek, Foxy, Young Gunz) higher priorities more than anything else, so time will tell if he's actually any good at the job.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I always assumed it would be '06.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't entirely understand gabbneb's comment or why miccio highlighted part of it.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, me neither -- are chingy & nelly thinking about moving to NYC or something?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"chelly and ningy"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

pretend his comma is an 'and' for the tee-hee

miccio (miccio), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

?
