Lamest thing ever?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

By a country mile I'd say -- can't even be bothered to learn how to say "Oye Como Va"? Just say "yeah" a lot. Stinky, sez I.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"Lamest thing ever?"

Certainly no lamer than the Aerosmith/Britney/N'Synch/Nelly/Mary J.Blige circle jerk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to post this.

Curtis Stephens, Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Were you watching, Alex? I was pretty sickened by the one you're talking about but really. Beyonce was like your cousin who gets to sing at the wedding even if every last person there is completely embarassed by having to hear him.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, as far as I'm concerned, everything Beyonce does is shit, so I don't care. But the travesty of Aerosmith -- a once respectable band -- whoring themselves out for the Superbowl and sharing a stage with pabulum-merchants like Brittney?......too much to bear.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the real challenge is trying to recall a musical performance at the Super Bowl that wasn't a freaking travesty.

Nick Mirov (nick), Sunday, 26 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

A sound and well-reasoned point, Nick!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the master list of everyone who performed at every Super Bowl, for reference. Super Bowl XXI would have been interesting to watch: pregame was "Salute to California with the Beach Boys", and Neil Diamond sang the anthem.

Nick Mirov (nick), Sunday, 26 January 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i wonder if shania would ever play the grey cup.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 27 January 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, No Doubt was pretty decent, and Sting actually dug up one of his good (i.e. not solo) songs to perform. But Shania Twain's band looked like postapocalyptic muppets on E.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 27 January 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting list, Nick. I demand to know what "Beat of the Future" is!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 27 January 2003 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"I`m very grateful to represent the American multicultural rainbow thing." - Carlos Santana on the Super Bowl pregame show

Al (sitcom), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

did he thank his guardian angel?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Marvin Gaye at the NBA All-Star Game: Best sporting event music performance evah? (not counting Florida A&M band, etc.)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Marvin's was incredible. They used to play that on the radio in Detroit all the time. Isn't it on the box set?

But most punk rock performance = Rosanne

(I liked the sting/stefani thing)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

As if Bon Jovi couldn't be bothered to do "Livin' On a Prayer".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

they'd just end up doing it 'unplugged'

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

which year was the one where stevie wonder tap-danced? that was very disturbing

dave k, Monday, 27 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The resemblance between Shania Twain's backing band and the Tri-Lams when they performced at the Greek council talent show was uncanny?

Clap your hands everybody! Everybody clap your hands!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"The show captured the merriment of a Caribbean Cruise; featuring rock band KISS."

!

robertw, Monday, 27 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Shania's performance of "Up!" was spectacular. She's so great.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Totally upstages Beyonce in the robo-diva sweepstakes.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Did Shania display a deep, meaningful influence of the Ramones in her performance? Were her sickly-sweet c&w banalities suddenly rife with furiously down-strummed bar chords?

Hmmmm...thought not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Would any of the Ramones have looked as good in thigh-high boots and a sparkly bra?

Hmmmm...thought not.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Especially not the dead ones.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Joey's band played last year

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey wasn't anyone else hoping to hear "ladies and gentlemen please welcome Fear!!" And the openning bars of "Lets have a War"??

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Up! was all vocodered and dub-echoed the fuck out and her band had one dude dressed like a 77 punk, mohawk and all. It was so fucking rad.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see a halftime show of reactionary minimalism next year.

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 27 January 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

heh...is this it?!
when U2 played there last year the drone on newsgroup went mad. I must have been getting 50 emails a day. as i recall it was all to do with the authenticity stuff (it all started as cheap shots at the band and so on).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Up! was all vocodered and dub-echoed the fuck out and her band had one dude dressed like a 77 punk, mohawk and all.

how stupid.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Except it sounded like metal machine music but more melodic and the crowd was going wild and I felt like I was in the year 2020.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:48 (twenty-three years ago)

you are so not otm. it sounded like someone pooping in my ear with alot of crowd noise.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst mental image EVER, Chaki.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

"one dude dressed like a 77 punk, mohawk and all."

Punks in `77 didn't have mohawks, pinhead. The `hawks didn't crop up until later on.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 January 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, moted!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 27 January 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

okay. alex wins.

but he dressed like a punk frsure.

and shania wore a sparkly bra!!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 06:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Sparkly bras might not be bad things, but nothing could make Shania appealing. Yeesh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i was not hearing the sounds, i was focused on how cool the lower half of beyonce's body is. the top part is not so bad either

ron (ron), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

ok i lied i heard some of the sounds. does carlos ever STOP SOLOING???

ron (ron), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dub-echoed the fuck out" = stadiums are really really cavernous
