I have to interview top lapgazers DAT Politics on Wednesday for Index magazine.

If anybody has some good questions they want to ask them, stick them on this thread and I'll pose them.

I have a question for you. Did you make up the term "lapgazers" and can I please steal it?

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

it was "screengazers", so its not even stealing.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah but 'lapgazers' is funnier

geeta (geeta), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, obv

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

If Kevin Shields and that guy from The Streets got together would they make shoegeezer music?

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

take my wife, please

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lapgazer is mine and funnier, but Lapgeezers is scarier. Lapgeezer will be the BritPop of Lapgazer. Lapgeezers will disintegrate into Ladgazers and Ladgeezers who will then become Navelgazers and finally, despicably, Navelgeezers.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I declare Nedgazer music to be the improvement on all of this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

...Then of course they'll grow old and become Dadgazers and Dadgeezers who can't even gaze their own laps any more for flab.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

okay, okay,I have a real question for DAT Politics:If Matmos,Kid 606 and Blectum from Blechdom were in a no-holds-barred free-for-all steel cage match against each other, who would win?(I understand that Kid 606 would be outnumbered, but he might surprise you.)

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, that's getting asked, right after 'What does Gilles Deleuze's concept of 'the autheniticty of the synthetic' mean to you?'

Momus (Momus), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

ask them what their favorite casiotone keyboard is

juiceboxxx, Monday, 27 January 2003 03:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are DAT politics as a concept personal or wide-ranging? Political or politicized? (I am not entirely joking -- why that particular medium as a choice of reference unless it was for the hell of it?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Would they ever consider covering "WHO DAT" or "GIMME DAT DING" and would this in and of itself be a political or a personal statement?

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, precisely! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

You know that they tossed around the idea of calling it RealPlayerPolitik until they considered the possible lawsuits. That way they could have brought up all kinds of questions like:what is real music? Is a laptop an instrument? Who's playing who? What is authentic in our hurly burly world of appropriation and shifting definitions. But I like DAT too,cuz it reminds me of Redman and the subtle racial snobbery of the laptocracy.

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 05:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who's gonna start the next thread:How Can You Tell When Someone On ILM Is Drunk?

Scott Seward, Monday, 27 January 2003 05:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sooo....... what's your thing?

original bgm, Monday, 27 January 2003 06:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do you do what you want to do?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

can you ask them a little about their workflow??
the music seeems like such a unique combination of digital & analog, I wonder what their writing process is like...
do they start tracking sounds first?? collecting samples?? writing structure? fleshing out beats?

haha... also, I wonder why the triplets in the very beginning of 're-folk' sound half missing in my headphones but not on my speakers... both channels are there- does this happen to anyone else???

coelcanth, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is a bit late, but maybe it's still possible to ask them
by e-mail or something ... i would be interested in knowing what
they think of the following quote (from Brian Eno):

"Only neo-vegetables enjoy using computers the way they are at the moment.... You're just sitting there, and it's quite boring. You've got this stupid little mouse that requires one hand, and your eyes. That's it.... No African would stand for a computer like that."
