Just heared this in an odd electro/punk soundclash mix that someone made for me and its hilarious! Are there any more tracks where this came from?

el wanko, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a b-side 'beat connection' a recent 7" and an album coming this year (?) but none match the majesty of losing my edge

(jess if u read this: i noticed in a post you made from last year that 'beat connection' was in yr favourite singles list, xplain?)

The B-Side being better is the funniest thing about Losing My Edge!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

produced by DFA, the guy(s) behind Radio 4 - you'll recognise the same jangly spasms in their recent album 'Gotham' - also Search: DFA/LCD Soundsystem of Le Tigre's 'Deceptacon'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't decide if I like that Le Tigre remix or think it's really twee and completely not my thing. Probably the latter. I haven't heard much Radio 4, I love Losing My Edge but more for the lyrical content and the idea than actually to go mad and dance to. I suspect this is the only way I like non dance stuff these days, it's a bit sad.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Also search the Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers," if we're going to do a complete DFA rfi.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

'Losing My Edge' is great as a concept but as an actual record I've found i havent listened to it much at all...admittedly the Le tigre remix is wearing a bit thin on me now as well but it had a massive instant impact on me

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Losing My Edge" is a fantastic track, and I think the lyrics and music complement each other well. I like the B-side in its own special way. I'd say its a better party track. the new single, "Give It Up" is kickin, but the b-side is shite.

I wonder if the LCD LP will be worth listening to at all...

tinobeat (tinobeat), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I heard this in the focus group: couldn't understand why ppl hated it since the other electroclash tracks got the thumbs up from most.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it hit too close to home *cough cough*?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

electroclash?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

well, that's what i thought it was and when i asked someone (can't remember who) after it was all over they said that it was.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

electroclash/electropunk/pop - fair description

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmmm I dunno, it doesn't feel right to me to call it that. but god knows what the other name would be.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

crap? just kidding. really.

nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

its a good track. I don't care what is called. it had a electro retro-ish feel to it. it had good amounts of repetition (ie. lots of it).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio most of the ppl on the focus group read or used to read ILM, so jokes about hipsters and their music tastes are pretty much an everyday thing i.e. LCD didn't get a pass based on its "funny lyrics". I think it's okay - "Beat Connection" is excellent though. I'd call it indie-dance :)

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

OK I can't hear lyrics properly so I just heard the backing track.

heh...indie dance.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, speaking of the focus group...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

see also the juan maclean - you can't have it both ways/my time is running out 12", and forget radio 4.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

did dfa produce beaches & canyons or just release it?
radio 4 are abhorent
indie dance=stone roses_charlatans_chemical brothers_LCD soundsystem. nice!

gi66y, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Juan maclean thing actually yeah, did anyone hear that 12" remix of Metro Area that DFA put out?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

struggle, house of jealous lovers + giv it up all almost peerless rub. LME + BC r gd tho.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

can anyone answer me this. when he's name-checking all those bands, he keeps saying "Niagra". i've heard of almost everything else on his list, but couldn't find out who or what this band was.

anyone know?

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps the Niagra he's referencing is the female singer of Destroy All Monsters? Dunno, still haven't heard this song.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

You might have better luck searching for "Niagara". They were an early 1970s German percussion group (that's why he references having their albums on German import). The only thing I've heard by them was on a Mr. Bongo comp, and it's quite good.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, see, since I haven't heard "Losing My Edge," I couldn't put it into context. Thanks for the info, Vic.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i was reading the new Wax Poetics and there was an ad with a picture of a record by Niagara (sorry i spelled it wrong) w/a picture of a black woman's breast. i was wondering if this was the record so i called my friend who has half of his brain sectioned off as a sample data-base. he told me there's a "Niagara Break" that's been used a bunch, but the record's not supposed to be any good. so i still don't know if this is it.

what are the Mr Bongo comps, kinda like the Dusty Fingers, Ultimate Breaks and such?

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a wicked niagara track on the recently released and likewise wicked cherrystone's rocks comp.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
They nicked that bassline from "Change" by Killing Joke, you realize.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the problem with these DFA dudes properly releasing their material? Why can't I go into a store and buy a CD with "Losing My Edge" on it? Surely, it would appeal to more than just ILM types?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't been able to find it in a store either, Spence....is there some great scam at work? What's the story?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you like the track, Alex?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It's only available on the Channel 2 (Output) compilation
on CD
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008PRQI/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Yer still up, Jody. Yeah I do. When the bass kicks in at 2:20, I got more into it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone heard the new single "Tribulations" ? Is it as good the previous ones ?
I'm also searching for the "Losing my edge" lyrics if someone has it.

Sami (Sami), Friday, 23 May 2003 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Martian, is that compilation un-mixed?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

A DFA singles comp (on CD) will be released someday. It's got all the key tracks on it. (check my old DFA thread for the full tracklisting)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Spencer that comp is unmixed.

And very good too, that DK7 track is cool. Anyone heard this album by Colder on Trev Jackson's label?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

A DFA singles comp (on CD) will be released someday

Someday like when there are no more automobiles and we're all telekinetic and travel around in plasticine space bubbles and eat tiny pills instead of four course meals, or someday like in the next couple of months?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

It was sposed to come out in October. And it didn't. And I still haven't heard a release date. I'll email you Alex.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan, there is some info in jockey slut, [not heard it yet]

Jockey Slut review of Colder - Again - ALBUM OF THE MONTH
http://www.jockeyslut.com/magazine/earwax/index.html

COLDER
AGAIN
(Output)
Revolt through style is nothing new. When Marlon Brando was asked what he was rebelling against in 'The Wild One', his aloof, leather-jacketed demeanour spoke volumes. Half a century later and the fractious symbiosis between striking a pose and delivering a message may have shifted somewhat, but its power still resonates. Frenchman Marc (Colder) Nyugen is testament to its shock and awe; his debut album, 'Again', his electronic battle weapon of mass distraction.

'Again' is that rare beast; both cool as fuck and imbued with a sense of ferocious vitality. Yes, it may be on Trevor Jackson's achingly trendy Output, and yes, it may have one sneaker anchored in the punk-funk disco, but Colder's nightclub is a world removed from cosmopolitan, bright light decadence. 'Again' is belligerently monochrome; vivid, intense, modish, yes, but drenched in the paranoid underworld of outsiders and urban psychosis. If 'Again' was a film, it'd be a devastating clash between 'Drugstore Cowboy' and 'Donnie Darko'. A 45-minute lurid trip into black and white obliqueness, The Polyphonic Spree this most certainly ain't.

The opening track, 'Crazy Love', is a clear statement of intent, corrosive guitars and sinister yet simplistic lyrics battling with seedy electro in a den of iniquity. The lysergic, echo chamber of 'Confusion' and the Sabres Of Paradise meets Massive Attack 'One Night In Tokyo' do little to lighten the heady brew of suffocation; nor does the pent-up dubby frustration of 'Shiny Star'.

However, 'Again' isn't dry, gothic emotion. Cloaked in a very French elan, it's hip and accessible, brutal and sexy. The funereal, stark minimalism of 'Silicon' is a fascinating Depeche Mode meets Basic Channel alliance, and the icy, twitchy send off of 'Colder' ("No more places to go/No more memories to burn") - wherein Joy Division begin to morph into New Order - a more than fitting valediction.

In providing 2003's first really essential release, Colder has created a soundtrack for beautiful, idiotic misfits the world over. What's he rebelling against? What you got?
Jim Butler (9)

JUSTIN ROBERTSON
DJ
"This reminds me of early New Order. There's bits of Suicide in there too - that kind of sparse and brooding feel - and it's quite haunting in places. I really like the first track, 'Crazy Love' - you can hear those classic sounds in there, but it's not overly reverential. It definitely sounds contemporary."

MARK HEDONIZM
HEDONIZM RECORDS, BRIGHTON
"As soon as the distinctive Krautrock bassline and deadpan lyric of the opening cut 'Crazy Love' kick in, it becomes apparent that Colder's album isn't going to disappoint. Dubby effects, cut-up rhythms and haunting vocals drift in and out, binding it all together. Although the Krautrock theme is consistent throughout - tracks such as 'Shiny Star' making more than a passing reference to Can - the diversity and inventiveness make this an involving album."

LAUREN ZORIC
WARP RECORDS
"It's very measured, sparse and clean. I like the darker, more primitive electronics territory without the gloss, and the dubby tracks are a nice surprise. It's raw and sexy, not obvious and has that hint of violence, which is quite daring. His lyrics are good too. It takes you into this mysterious, filmic otherworld, which is what you want music to do."

released june 30th

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i've got a copy. It's pretty cool. I'm seeing them tonight - they are opening up for ARE Weapons. A double header review ... dunno if it's going to be anygood live, though. But I dig it.
