Take away "I Almost Prayed" and what's left?

Aaron A., Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

possibly, the first two albums. the cover of 'you upset the grace of living when you lie' - i dunno. classic 80s band that was not of it's time.

'cut me deep' is a great song

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

at the time – eg in the 80s — i detested them tremendously, probably more for what ppl kept telling me they "represented" than the sound they made

to be honest i can't even slightly remember what they sound like now — i must have some of their records somewhere

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

huh! why is that not so hard to believe mark s?

i will always love that band for their cover of 'you upset the grace of living when you lie' - as i played it over and over again - until i clued up that it was tim hardin song. thus the weather prophets got me into tim hardin. unfortunately i have not listened to a weather prophets song in years. the seduction of influence has strayed me away!

there's a copy of one of their LPs in my local 2nd hand store for A$15.. maybe i should indulge.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

except it's a CD

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit jim - i've got doubles of weather prophets back in canada! they just kept on popping up in the charity shops! come back and tell us which one....

robotman, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved the Loft and thought the Weather Prophets took the Loft sound and discarded all that was good about it.

"Cut Me Deep" was a Jasmine Minks song (I don't think TWPs had a "Cut Me Deep", could be wrong of course... did they?) and the Jasminks are/were seven billion times the band the Weather Prophets ever were.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

doh! you're right about the Jasmine Minks song. i'm confused. it's probably 'Almost prayed' i'm thinking of anyway. the Loft were great, too.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

aye but what of pete astor's solo career? that's a dud.

robotman, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't heard a semiquaver of it. but i likes the Wisdom of Harry and Ellis Island Sound a lot, if that counts.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

'tis not very good, avoid, avoid, avoid. when i was a young creationate; i went to great lengths to track down the paris only imports of his solo stuff. it's horrible.

there is something odd about his voice though - almost iconic?

robotman, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

it's got an almost 'spoken' feel to it, not quite like Lou Reed or Hamish Kilgour but leaning in that direction..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i know ... it's very apparent when he covered that tim hardin song '...when you lie'.

lou reed - maybe - lou reed singing bob dylan? there is something about it?

robotman, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but they recorded "Worm In My Brain" which is probably the most frighteningly accurate description of clinical depression that I've ever heard. "I've got a worm in my brain, it brings me to my knees, it comes on like a thought and stays just like a disease." Lyrically, this is the most powerful line I've ever heard in my life.

kate, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm inclined toward classic for Almost Prayed and the rest is all good - I was rather keen on them at the time.

tigerclawskank, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep hearing the first few bars of "Heroes" by D. Bowie and thinking it's "Why Does The Rain" (the Loft versh, obv.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot about Worm ... second favourite song after the Tim Hardin cover.

robotman, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

A good friend of mine had another good friend of mine read out the lyric to "Like Frankie Lymon" as the reading at his wedding.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yuk.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a fan, still - as it happens I played Diesel River last weekend! I second the praise for Almost Prayed and Worm, and Frankie Lymon works because it's sung in such an understated way. I think reading it out at a wedding might work less well. They are one of the handful of '80s indie bands I still like, but I guess they were pretty minor.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
are these any good?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

they are a band who seem to have left little trace behind them.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

Isn't this a good thing?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

A handful of excellent songs,

"Almost Prayed"
"Your door shines just like gold"
"Naked as the day you were born"

and some others.

and a heck of a lot of "I am very profound" overcooked in the lyrics dept biz.

A shame, cause the Loft seemed destined to be great.

Mark G, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

I can distantly remember some of their songs. I recall them as being thin and insubstantial.

The New Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

Almost Prayed was the only really top-notch song, though Like Frankie Lymon was lovely. They were let down by Pete Astor and Alan McGee's perception that Astor was some kind of a rock god, which he wasn't, and which didn't play to his strengths.
