looking for more 60s pop

so i posted before and i got some good recs - still looking for more 60s pop brilliance that everyone recognizes but no one can name (last time got recs for left banke and the association, other songs include donovan's classics, beach boys (too popular, but that's what i'm looking for)... pretty things/beatles too beatlesy; i want whimsy and i know there are one hit wonders out there that can provide it.

all thoughts GREATLY appreciated - also things along the lines of the yardbirds or house of the rising sun or things slightly more rockin' would be ok, as long as they're qualified as such.

I have this album which someone made me a copy of, it's called "25 Greatest Hits Of Bubblegum" and I've got no track listing or label or anything, but it starts with Yummy Yummy Yummy and ends with Sugar Sugar and is packed chock full of yummy 60s undeniably dancable and catchy pop choons. Cannot reccomend it highly enough!

Paul (Paulus) to thread...

The Teeneage Opera is a must-buy (Mark Wirtz/Keith West), Wendy & Bonnie's Genesis is a real one-off, anything by Margo Guryan, & if you're into French music, Serge Gainsbourg's Comic Strip, a France Gall '60s compilation (or her 1968 album al spring to mind.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 08:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have yet to meet anyone who can dissuade me from the belief that 'The Legend Of Xanadu' by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich is the best song of the entire 1960s.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Jez!Hope you're well
Check out The Love Generation,Eternity's Children,Cowsills,Free Design,Mark Eric,'Fading Yellow'comps,Hugo Montenegro's 'Good Vibrations'&'Moog Power',5th Dimension,Sergio Mendes' Brasil '66,The Match,'Ripples'comps.All this stuff is great,really soft & melodic.Just downloaded a great Michel Polnareff track from Kazaa'Tout tout pour ma cherie'.Jez has made some great 60's flavoured music himself,check out his site(www.boum.co.uk)

Paul R (paul R), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

A few more... The Groop,Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends(sadly only available on Japanese import)The Parade(again only Japanese import. The 'Bubblegum MF' series is worth checking out on ebay($16.99)Although the guy took ages to send me the CD's.They are very good indeed, loads of great trax.If anyone has any to swap,I've got 3 volumes...

Paul R (paul R), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The entire Ripples series is fabulous and worth every penny. They track Britain's take on California sunshine pop and all that sort of thing. Lots of covers of better known artists like Roger Nichols, etc.

Musica has a bunch of them for £8 post paid within the UK. Delivery would be extra out of the UK.

elisabeth k, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

the bee gees - horizontal/odessa/cucumber castle
andy kim - rainbow ride lp
post-belmonts Dion (his cover of purple haze is sticky!)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Check out the Five Americans, "Western Union" was their hit but the Sundazed reissue of the same name has other great songs ... especially "7:30 Guided Tour" and "Evol Not Love"

Also look for some of Tommy James & the Shondells' lesser hits like "I Like The Way" and "Don't Let My Love Pass You By"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I love '7:30 Guided Tour',one of my favourites.'Mirage' is also very good by Tommy James & The Shondells.

Paul R (paul R), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Sundazed and The Collectables Label - very cheap! are good places to pick up comps. I can't tell you how many Collectables things I've bought. The "Pye Psych" one is good. The Lemon Pipers one is supposed to be good and is going for practically nothing.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

PAUL REVERE AND THE RADIERS! PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS!

The Stones to the Monkees' Beatles. Definitely check out: Greatest Hits, Ultimate Ride '63-'67, Just Like Us!, Revolution, Spirit Of '67, Midnight Ride.

So damn good.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like The Turtles' Battle of the Bands, where they pretend to be a bunch of different bands.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hollies

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, you have to get the Fading Yellow comps. If you're looking for obscure one-off 45s that's where to find 'em. About 1/3-1/2 of each CD are great stuff, & you won't have heard of more than 1-2 songs before. 3 volumes, all worth getting.

Also there's a piece in the latest Record Collector about a band called The AeroVons, whose great lost LP was issued last year. It's so Beatle-y as to be Rutle-y, but is truly marvellous.

Thomas & Richard Frost was my fave reissue of recent times, but perhaps you already have that? The Mark Eric LP mentioned upthread has recently been reissued I gather, so get that too. Ripples? Polnareff? Cyrkle? Oh yes indeed.

harveyw (harveyw), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

For a more obscure reccom.
try The Action, especially "Rolled Gold," which
is a collection of unreleased tracks, but contains
their best songs. Very good pop-rock - not on the
happy, hippy side of things but on the solid,
power-pop side of things.

Squirlplice, Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

You got the Zombies, right? Check out some Cahd & Jeremy (on sundazed). Get the Bee Gees 60s records, especially Odessa. If you like softpop/sunshine/easy listening pop or bossa nova, look for some of the more obscure pop Astrud Gilberto albums, Claudine Longet, The Sandpipers. And if you want one-hit wonders, get Buddah bubblegum records of course...

Yeah, the 60s was ushered in with Chubby Checker's 1959 cover of The Twist (or Ray Charles' 1959 Tell Me What I Say, if you prefer), but for me, both have more of a foot in the 50s than 60s.

The tipping of the scales is in this 1961 hit, imo:
