or:
You Follow, In Good Faith, A Critical Write-Up Of A Performer And (Wuddya Know!) Do Not Have The Slightest Feeling Of Being Cheated, Afterwards!? Or - Vice Versa, Swear To Shoot The "Frickin Hype Monger"!?
may apply to live experiences as well as recordings
...tho' my own freshest references would be the latter,
like buying The Residents' latest mainly because of Byron Coley dropping good words on it, or deciding to part with a bit of my moderate cash amount for Vincent Gallo's 'Recordings Of Music For Films' (due to Penman getting all passinate 'bout it), and the up-coming purchase of 'Supersilent 6' is also sped-up by press talk...
true, true - in most of such cases i've been to a greater or lesser extent familiar with the music, yet that's not always so (hadn't heard Gallo, e.g.)
have you ever blindly believed a "hype"? and to what effect?
i'm all eyes'n'ears now...

hype is fun - i always get taken in and then regret it as i shamefully sell my 'hype is fun' product - my menswear, my datsuns, etc.

but the Supersilent 6 thing is good! i think.
The Polyphonic Spree were the most hyped band i was almost taken in by recently (well, last year sometime). luckily someone played me their record before i went ahead and bought a ticket to go see them (fascinated/appalled by all the 'see them in all their glorious naivety! hear their winsome Beach Boys harmonies! have an ersatz religious experience!' press) and it was cack.
But yeah, hype is fun, nonetheless.

I think it was probably The Coral - I read some article somewhere that made them sound totally fabulous and what I got was some fun merseybeat skanking stuff, not at all bad but hardly a revelation.
I think my critical karma is probably way in the negative i.e. I have swindled more people into listening to shite than I have been swindled. It was all well-meant, honest!

ROCK ACTION by Mogwai. Not worth the space-age polymer it's stamped on, despite all the fawning press.
