Zwan - Mary Star of the Sea...C/D?

There are a few other Zwan-related threads lying around, but nothing on thier debut itself. My opinion? Classic, and one of the two great guitar-pop albums to be released in a while (the other being Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' "Hearts of Oak", which I believe is coming out next month). Who'd have thought a three-guitar band other than Bends/OKC-era Radiohead could be so melodic?

Simon H., Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I wouldn't go all the way to Dud, but the four songs I've heard seemed like kinda OK cuddly power-rock. They also reminded me why I don't like Billy Corgan's singing. Jimmy Chamberlain sounds good, though. And it'll probably make Dave Pajo some money, so I guess I can endorse it on those grounds, as long as I don't have to hear it a lot.

Jesse Fox, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It's kinda hard to tell at this point. It's a big disappointment to me personally, since I was expecting a return to classic Billy form, but alas.

It's also rather annoying that half the songs start out with the exact same guitar chord. The lyrics are pretty simple and straightforward, something that I'm not a big fan of. Billy's voice has finally settled down, but it's migrated a bit too far from the Siamese Dream dreaminess for my tastes.

"Jesus I" is pretty sw33t though.

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

What, and nobody's invoked me yet? I swear.

I will be listening to it shortly and shall report.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 04:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn! Dave Pajo! A Chavez dude! Paz from A Perfect Circle and Jimmy Chamberlin! That's cool.

Oh wait, who's that tall guy coming up to the mic...no! no! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, those lyrics are VERY clear and audible!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Are they playing "Honestly" on the radio? I heard it on late nite TV and it's a nice tune.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i can just tell you how weird it was to see david pajo on a commericial tonight in the middle of king of the hill?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah!

Album = me like. A mix of immediate winners, growers and stuff I was familiar with from the live shows. Very bright sound all around -- the major angst may actually be screamed out of his system now (maybe). I shall just have to listen to it again. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm surprised at how breezy it is. I would have thought he'd go 100% corporate death rock goth-y on this one.

I'm thinking Classic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

d00d,
forget that old billy. he's gone, like last year.
people never got that the whole machine/machines of gawd thing was a total joke. not even 98% of the fans. he said in a few interviews then and now, that it was a "schtick". it was taking public perception (which seemed skewed from the get go) and twisting it around the music. but, it kinda fell on deaf ears as most of his audience is insistent that whatever he does is gold. not so.
i fall in the growing minority that still thinks adore was a fluke.
even if the man said it was for sure, people wouldn't buy it.

i got the zwan yesterday. there's a few great songs and more than a few "eh" songs. and belive me, i've been waiting for this for a while. i was/am a diehard SP fan. but, even i have to draw some lines.
the crunchier the better and sometimes the softness works. but, on the zwan, it seems to be a little flat on some of the tunes.
Mary is the huge standout!! that's what i wanted!!! huge guitars, mega drums. yeah, that's what it sounds like when zwan hits it right.
and that end song, come with me, is pretty fuckin catchy. but, it's early and i only listened once.

edde, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, so you were DELIBERATELY making rubbish music? Yeah, right Billy.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like he was just having fun being a goth. Mmm, Machina...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it better than Machina

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just gonna go ahead and register my vote for Dud, cuz I think Corgan is a pompous twit who doesn't even know why his lamo first band was popular in the first place.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

...plus, there's no sea shanties on it, which from the title, I was sorta hoping for...Y'know, like great big smashing sea

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Arr, maties.

Second listen in and it's indeed worthy -- right now I think the potential downside is there's not as much variety as I'd like. Nothing wrong with big and uplifting most of the time, though! Right now faves include "Settle Down," "Of a Broken Heart," "Heartsong"...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

What a fine sense of humour corgan must have, I must remember next time I'm down the pub with my friends to go off for 3 years and produce an overpriced crap rock album, they'll all think I'm fucking hilarious.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, that actually sounds kinda entertaining! I like the idea of you as corporate rock god for some reason!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Ned. I knew his lyrics were clear and audible. I was asking him to Shut Up...with the pith and righteous energy of Kelly Osbourne. Which is giant.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Eh? Speak up there, sonny!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

And for anyone who hasn't heard the stuff...there's about 95% less angst ,60% less Corgan-snarl and 70% more pop goodness.

Simon H., Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Come With Me a cover of the Jimmy Page/Puff Daddy collabo?

I've discovered that Smashing Pumpkins songs sound better if you imagine Billy's singing them to Ned. Especially "Adore." Like how Kelly Osbourne's closing ballad sounds better if you imagine its about Ozzy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Come With Me a cover of the Jimmy Page/Puff Daddy collabo?

Thank fuck, no.

I've discovered that Smashing Pumpkins songs sound better if you imagine Billy's singing them to Ned.

Imagining Limp Bizkit songs sung to Anthony is even better!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But me and Fred don't fight about my leadership. He'd never straight up leave my shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

And yet you are stuck with the homies that you fucked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

its a *good* album, but once you've seen em live its a little disappointing. get thee to soulseek and download the twenty minute versions of the title track and 'jesus, i' for the real deal.

My solo album will be new age

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 31 January 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

It's selling pretty well, at least here in State College. I swear it's all because Corgan put pants back on and grew a lil' moustache. He was freakin' out his preppy fans, who may have thought Billy was replaced Sammy Hagar-style by Sinead O'Connor.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Sadly, my sentiments are echoed in Pitchfork's review.

Curtis Stephens, Friday, 31 January 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Revive! (since that Corgan thread is getting so mant posts)

I bought this record when it came out and I still don't like it. But then I haven't liked any Corgan since SD. I mainly got it as a fan of Chavez, Slint and that cute bassist from APC who always talks about being a compulsive masturbator in her interviews. Is this worth trying to get into? (The CD, not compulsive masturbation)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Revive! (since that Corgan thread is getting so mant posts)"

This is a real Mant post!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

uh huh, I'm forcing myself not to correct typos if it's obvious what I meant.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it recently in a stack of old promos a friend let me take, it's ok. I still really like "Honestly" and there's one song I really really like, either track 7 or 8. some real cringe inducing moments, though.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I just put it on. "Lyric"'s not bad. I like the backing vocal.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone said earlier that it doesn't do justice to hearing them live, and I echo that sentiment. I saw them live, and was surprised how much more I enjoyed it than listening to the CD. Haven't put the cd back on since then...and now they broke up, wah.

Richard K (Richard K), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

if only paz could control herself, maybe they'd still be together

common_person (common_person), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Her nonstop twat twiddling broke up the band, yo.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice!

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's hard to play bass with one hand. I mean you can only really play four notes, unless you get a six string.

I wonder if she does this in conversation? Like you'll be hanging out with her and she's sitting there with her hand down her pants like Al Bundy. That'd be kinda hot actually. We're getting into C-Man territory here, but seriously.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS ALBUM IS AWFUL (I feel awkward saying this considering my sentiments on the other thread)

It's hard to play bass with one hand. I mean you can only really play four notes, unless you get a six string.

Don't forget FRET TAPPING!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, she could go all Victor Wooten and work up a big O at the same time.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDE that would be SWEET

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"U Can't Hold No Groove (If You Ain't Got No Pocket)"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Suddenly the meaning of that song becomes clear

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

She said she's come on stage before. I believe Patti Smith used to wear a trenchcoat and wank onstage as well.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

try as i might to like the idea of zwan, the disc is rather worthless.

i still stand by Mary, but for the most part, it's all popped out and overdone and not nearly the way it shoulda (ie- bigger low end).

i heard a BBC session they did and it was way better than what made the album. did anyone even try to tell billy no?

eedd, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone said earlier that it doesn't do justice to hearing them live, and I echo that sentiment. I saw them live, and was surprised how much more I enjoyed it than listening to the CD. Haven't put the cd back on since then...and now they broke up, wah

So, they are kinda the opposite of Smashing Pumpkins? Cause I'd rather listen to an SP album than see them live again, by a long shot.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The only time I saw SP live was at the Lollapalooza they headlined. They were so boring that I left early, and I wasn't the only one by a long shot. Billy was making excuses, he said something from the stage like, "Large stadiums aren't conducive to rock and roll music", despite the fact that the Beastie Boys totally tore the roof off an hour previous. (Maybe more conducive to rap, eh? In any case the Beasties blew them the fuck off the stage). Anyhow I distinctly remember some girl quoting Billy's excuse derisively on the way out.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've seen them twice, and both times... boring and bad. Like, I started to wonder how many takes Billy actually does to get his vocals to sound halfway decent on the records. Cause I don't care if he's an ace singer, but live he sounds like a 12 year-old boy who can't hold a damn note and is going through his voice change.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Endless Summer" is based on a Gravity Demos riff btw:

idk how much of a minority i am in this but "yeah!" is one of my favorite billy compositions ever

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 19:19 (eight years ago)

bought the Zwan record this year, I had not listened to it in years, but I still think it's good. And in spite of all the ambitions (and guitarist) quite lucid. :-)
(that new Corgan solo on the other hand...)

Ludo, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 20:24 (eight years ago)

(ned otm 100 years ago)

Too kind. What I remember when I saw them the one time -- this would have been their second live show ever, in OC, after the one with the clip linked above -- was how absolutely carefree and genial BC was on stage. LOTS of looks, exchanges and laughter with Jimmy Chamberlain in particular. Honestly the only time I ever saw him that way on stage for anything, the closest to it being the Sky Saxon tribute in LA, which is the last time I've seen him anywhere.

There were something like 4 CDs worth of songs demoed/played live for the entire project. A full box along the lines of the other SP sets would be a dream but I can't imagine it happening at all.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 20:33 (eight years ago)

Think it's best left alone tbh. I love MSOTS, but it's uneven. But three more cd's of discarded material? I dunno man. Maybe a dream for completists, but knowing how much stuff Corgan - rightfully so! - discarded, it's probably for the best.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 20:38 (eight years ago)

There’s an amazing single album at least in that vault, though. I didnt even mention any of the Djali Zwan songs like “Friends as Lovers” (which he’s been playing recently on his solo tour). He does want to release it, just a question of when.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 21:21 (eight years ago)

did he ever apologize for publicly implying his Zwan bandmates didn't have the chops for his liking

Simon H., Wednesday, 1 November 2017 21:26 (eight years ago)

I just remember him saying they “ate too much lobster” on the major label dole lol. Also was complicated bc everyone in the band slept with Paz or tried to at some point (allegedly)...

flappy bird, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 21:31 (eight years ago)

ick

Simon H., Wednesday, 1 November 2017 21:32 (eight years ago)

if you look at wiki he states that he detests pajo and paz and will never ever go near them again. which is weird because I'm pretty positive they are better human beings than he is.

akm, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 22:49 (eight years ago)

judging by his recent interviews I'm willing to bet he'd have nicer things to say if he was asked about them now, but I don't think anyone will ever think to ask about the Zwan era tbh

Simon H., Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:22 (eight years ago)

I would've thought the same thing, but Zwan has come up in almost every interview he's done for the solo record, often w/r/t unreleased material. and yeah, he was still shit-talking James Iha less than 3 years ago, and now they're on good terms and getting ready for a full Pumpkins reunion next year. By the way, that reunion is in motion, all members are on good terms now, and there are festival offers on the table. only thing that could stop that is (not enough) money.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:27 (eight years ago)

I've just started listening to Mary, Star of the Sea for the first time in at least 13 years.

Simon H., Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:48 (eight years ago)

There's at least one cut on the DVD with the CD -- just him in studio, full solo track -- that's really great.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 23:50 (eight years ago)

which cut is that?

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 November 2017 00:17 (eight years ago)

Maybe a dream for completists, but knowing how much stuff Corgan - rightfully so! - discarded, it's probably for the best.

that's the problem post-Pumpkins though, Billy has consistently had terrible judgment when it comes to what songs go on the album and which become B-sides or just remain unreleased. Mary Star of the Sea is by far the most egregious example of this.

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 November 2017 00:25 (eight years ago)

Didn't he basically accuse the rest of the band (aside from Jimmy) of being promiscuous drug fiends who wanted to fuck with his personal life and his career?

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 07:19 (eight years ago)

yes

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 November 2017 07:23 (eight years ago)

Oh yeah, and they were indie people who lacked drive and ambition - I think that was another one.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 07:36 (eight years ago)

After revisiting the whole album, I'd say the first half of this album is really strong - the second half not so much but there's still good stuff there. Kind of in agreement with Brad about 'Heartsong' - it would have worked better as a minute-long interlude. 'Baby Let's Rock' is the only outright awful song, struggled to sit through that one.

I've never delved into any of the live stuff or unreleased songs but this has made me want to.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 2 November 2017 11:52 (eight years ago)

"By the way, that reunion is in motion, all members are on good terms now," is D'Arcy off the drugs now?

akm, Thursday, 2 November 2017 12:47 (eight years ago)

makes me wonder what kind of "drive" Billy would have had if he'd never gotten that major-label lucre

Simon H., Thursday, 2 November 2017 12:59 (eight years ago)

"By the way, that reunion is in motion, all members are on good terms now," is D'Arcy off the drugs now?

yes

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:06 (eight years ago)

Let's see how long it lasts before the inevitable disintegration and Corgan starts crying in the press about it.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:08 (eight years ago)

yeah I give it a 20% chance of succeeding, if they even get the right offers

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 November 2017 15:09 (eight years ago)

I still really like this record. I still think they were great live. From what I've heard, the behind-the-scenes stuff with this band was pretty grimy and unpleasant.

Until now, I hadn't read this thread beyond my first contribution back in the day. The gross AaronHz detour about Paz's masturbation is particularly weird as, when I interviewed the group for a Kerrang! cover feature - all five of them together, for 20 minutes, with a camera crew filming me and Billy generally being a dick - apropos of literally nothing, she took my right hand at one point and said, "Do you know why this hand is the best hand to masturbate with?" and then answered, "Because it's my hand."

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Friday, 3 November 2017 11:56 (eight years ago)

I was at the Brixton 93 Pumpkins show when Billy dressed up as a clown to lamely "zing" Melody Maker critic Everett True, and they were terrible.

I was at the Metro show in 2003 when Zwan covered Silver Machine and they were utterly fantastic.

I was at the Metro show when Dead Meadow opened for Zwan, but I don’t think they played “Silver Machine” that night. I was just listening to their 4/12/02 Double Door show, this could have been a great band. Sweeney and Pajo brought a lot to the table, imagine if they had more room to contribute writing new songs.
