What are some of your fave bands that no one on this board seems to give two shits about?

For me:
Modest Mouse
Pernice Brothers
GBV
Beachwood Sparks
The Move
Reindeer Section

Colin O, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell me about Pernice Brothers and The Move.

gazuga (gazuga), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainer Maria
The Ropers
My Favorite
Sahara Hotnights

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

sizzle

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that "This World Won't End" by Pernice Bros. is one of the finest albums of the last ten years. Perfect production, beautiful melodies, and very good lyrics all delivered by a incredible singer kinda like Colin Bluntstone. Every song has an amazing verse, chorus, and bridge melody (if you're into that sorta shit)

The Move had an incredible array of pychedelic singles in the late 60s, extremely melodic, weird lyrics, and heavy guitars (for the time)

I guess I'm a bit of a melody freak

Colin O, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I may or may not be alone in thinking this but I far prefer Overcome by Happiness - the production is a bit less fussy and I like the songs better. "Clear Spot" is far and away my fave Pernice tune.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim, I do like that album I just think It drags a bit in the middle. Actually I think the production is actually a bit muddled on some songs. "Clear Spot" is great though.

Colin O, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM - Alive and Kicking!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, I guess I didn't mean good bands, I just meant personal faves. Sorry if I offended you sir.

Colin O, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i just thought of one: zeppelin.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

don't worry Colin, jess is unoffendable

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

those pernice bros recs, i happen to love them. Its an aussie thing. will i cringe a la Lemonheads soon?

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

lemonheads are alright up to a point. i can deal with the records better when i separate them from the 'personality' that is Evan Dando

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Dylan

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Beachwood Sparks

Hey, I voted for them in the end of year poll. As did Kilian.

Nobody (except Marcello) seems to give two shits about Lewis Taylor.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugly Duckling.

No, stop throwing stuff at me.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

doing an ilm-search first (and keeping grumbling for later) helps having these issues in a slightly clearer perspective
e.g. there was a longish discussion on Dylan rather recently, and Happy Mondays haven't been exactly "ignored" either, and GBV i've encountered on a few threads... and so on & etc...

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

super furry animals

robin (robin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

they got a bit of love around the time of RATW as far as I remember. I like them. I remember buying RATW and thinking it was album of the year and listening to it incessantly for about ten days, it really was shockingly good, and then I got sick of it and not even to exaggerate I haven't actually listened to it once since those first ten days. The other albums like Guerilla in particular and Fuzzy Logic I thought were really incoherent and despite having individual songs on them which are way better than anything else they've done (Northern Lites, God Show Me Magic) they didn't really stand up as albums.

Thus Radiator was my favourite SFA album since it felt like a complete work. RATW did too but didn't really have the longevity of Radiator I felt.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

devendra banhart; brain of morbius; mats& morgan; the stretchheads; badgewearer

bob snoom, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan in indie guitar band shocker!
i think rings around the world is by far their worst album
what i meant when i said they were routinely ignored was that all you hear about is ratw
wheras i think all the other albums are better, especially mwng, which surpasses all other guitar based albums ive ever heard by far...
so i suppose its not that theyre ignored so much as people don't go on about them as much as i think they should...

robin (robin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Archer Prewitts solo material.
Red House Painters
American Football

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Red House Painters and when I saw them a year or two ago I had a fine time, but it was especially excruciating to watch all the people around me who had so obviously been dragged there by friends/boyfriends/girlfriends. I have never seen such looks of utter despair before. People were visibly wilting before my eyes as RHP played endlessly... They seemed to take a perverse pleasure in never once picking up the tempo for half hour stretches.I witnessed this at a Low show once as well. People were actually writhing around on the ground half asleep by the end of it.

Scott Seward, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

On this board, as well as in real life, this band does NOT get the respect it deserves...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevie Wonder
The Spinners
The O'Jays
Gamble and Huff in general
The Temptations
Afrika Bambaataa (everyone likes him; nobody talks about him)
Win (heh)
Sly And The Family Stone

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Fishbone
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Severed Heads
Meat Beat Manifesto

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, we've just had a big discussion about Stevie, haven't we?

And surely Win get a mention virtually every day? Obliquely, I grant you.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The Righteous Brothers
Sam Cooke
Love
Smokey Robinson
Barry White
Teddy Pendergrass
New Edition
Force MD's

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

We had a big discussion about him because I revived pretty much the only thread ever, and it still tapered out after about 15 posts.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Fair enough, Tom. It was just fresh in my mind.

Chris, you mention Sam Cooke. I've just got the new Soul Stirrers box set and it sounds great on first listen. I think 'Live at the Harlem Square Club' got a couple of mentions on the best live album thread. But for someone who's as important as Ray Charles from that period he dosn't get enough attention.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Matchbox Twenty, what's up with that? They're like the Eminem of rock.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Only they suck ferociously.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

right, like Eminem

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Hah! Touche.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Has that guy from Matchbox 20 ever actually sang a note?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

jesus, was someone actually just defending Matchbox Twenty?

GREAT bands routinely ignored on ILM: FIREWATER and SKELETON KEY.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't me!

I've always had issues with that band being so successful what with their consistently "meh"-beyond-belief songs and their singer's never-actually-hitting-a-note delivery style. When he sang at last year's R & R Hall of Fame induction thing doing a tribute to George Harrison, and totally fuckin BUTCHERED "Here Comes the Sun", well, that's when my dislike of him grew to an actual honest-to-God want-to-kick-and-punch-and-stab-him HATRED.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just like, trying to hum "Here Comes the Sun" and caught myself humming VU's "Who Loves the Sun" damn, am I hep!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

bark psychosis!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

That will change.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

That will change.

that was forebode-y. don't leave us hangin' like that!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Just waiting for the album to come out...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm ... do you know something i don't, or are you simply as wistful and weak-kneed at the thought of another b.s. release as i?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

There seriously is a new album coming out! DJ Martian has the details.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

After a brief Fishbone search across ILM and the interweb, one thing I've noticed about them is this...

Everyone always refers to them in the past-tense, as though they all died a long time ago or something. They put out a full-length and an EP last year and have another full-length coming out this year, they still put on a helluvashow live...what gives?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Iron Law of Music: if you are not signed to a major, are covered extensively in the press or otherwise doing something beyond creating music, you do not exist, and therefore can be mocked in the streets. This is problematic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

" Iron Law of Music: if you are not ..."
-- Ned, that looks like carelessness. No? Or didn't you even intend to type in "Business" - right after "Music" ??

t''t, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

'Music Business' as subset of 'Music' -- I'm weird that way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

how can you be mocked in the streets if you don't exist? That's a fucking conumdrum.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Aarktica
G. Love
Curve
P.W.E.I.
Ry Cooder
Klark Kent
¥

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I like them there Aarktica. Great stuff. And Curve, wonderful Curve...

how can you be mocked in the streets if you don't exist?

Theoretically Bush is little more than a hologram of a meat puppet, and still he is mocked.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Baby! It's 3 a.m. I must be lonely!
I've sunglasses tucked in to the collar of my t-shirt!
I'm gonna push you a-round!

hey, has anyone seen Buttcrack: the Movie?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Klark Kent -- as in Stewart Copeland's alter ego? Not much to discuss there, really. I mean one album of sonic doodles, hell yeah, but it kinda ends there.

Re: Curve, I just sold all their post-CUCKOO eps and albums (COME CLEAN, "Pink Girl Gets the Blues", CHINESE BURN, etc.) and don't miss them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The Sea and The Cake don't get much props.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I would say 'for good reason,' but apparently this new album has something to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

the new album disappointed me in a big way. i hate all the electronic fiddling.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

chris: compared to something like "the fawn" i think the fiddling is quite tasteful and discreet.

ned: i just checked the dj martian page and yes a bark psychosis disc is listed, but there's no label given and a google search yields no information whatsoever. i think had bark psychosis reformed we *would* have heard about it.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex -- It's just odd given Curve have almost always been critical darlings. --and Klark?, whatstheprob? -- Copeland has sensibilities rarely critically identified - and the new-wave Kent offered a totally different approach; Rhythmnist and the Rumble Fish OMPS are nifty, too -- even if he hasn't offered up much since. ¥

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think _Come Clean_ is brilliant, especially "Dog Bone".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't say "Klark Kent Sucks!", just that it was a bit of a one-off. Kinda like talking about U2's "Passengers" phase or Michael Hutchence's MAX Q era. I mean.....there's just not a lot of meat in that particular sandwhich.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

man i saw Fishbone at a little ass club the other night and they kicked my ass!

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

How'd they sound, though?

(Sorry.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Max Q -- now that's funny. I give the guy some respect for trying something different, but meat, shoot, Max Q wasn't even TVP.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Kiss?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The National Trust

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

re: New Bark Psychosis

This is definitely happening.... sometime. I read an interview with one of the band members (the one that does the Boymerang records) and the lineup has changed pretty dramatically but it will be a Bark Psychosis album. I found a couple mp3s on slsk and if anyone wants one just hit up mcgarnickle.

original bgm, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, Yello don't get mentioned nearly enough.

original bgm, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think the Pretenders get enough mention.

But I was also gonna say the Golden Palominos - I know everyone hates Bill Laswell, but "This is How it Feels" is still one of my favorite records.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't hate Bill Laswell...shit, alot of my favorite rekkids got his name on 'em!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Flat Duo Jets

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

there's been a couple of Severed Heads threads (woo), including one that I started. must revive it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I might have started one of those SH threads, ESOJ. Still think they don't get mentioned enough.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Gun Club

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, I like some of the bands you list, but I'm afraid I don't have much to say about them.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i mentioned Yello today and I talk about Bob Wills all the time i feel like. okay yes i am a mentalist.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I mention the Gun Club fairly often, as does Dan Regan. Not much actual discussion, though.

The Mamas & the Papas!

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 30 January 2003 06:27 (twenty-three years ago)

WIll Oldham, Palace Brothers, Palace and Bonnie Prince Billy. Especially his latest album Master and Everyone is criminally ignored here. A frugal beauty.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 30 January 2003 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Win!
how're they mentioned obliquely on a daily basis again? thats the davey henderson band?
