so, whats your take on tipsy? the first album was a little patchy but with some real gems on it, liquordelic for starters. the tiki-schtick of the 2nd one was more cohesive but lacked the few killer tracks that were on the first. now then, is there a 3rd due, i see they're playing london in march (although i think i shall be in NYC around that time), so im guessing a new album is due?

their first 12" a friend taped me at the wrong speed- i thought they were the best band ever! memorable and fun yes but any more than an obscurant fat boy slim? joe gore's guitar playing never convinces me and their songs on occasion really ARE just bits of other ppls stuff lifted wholesale which irks me

i think i saw their new album on soulseek the other day...i like what i've heard ('Grossenhosen', 'Tuatara', 'Bunny Kick', 'Mr Excitement' - first three from the 'Asphodelic' compilation, latter from the 'Big Chill - Pipe Dreams' compilation) - shades of Lemon Jelly altho they dont rely on vocal samples much at all

First time I heard the first album in a record shop I was really excited. Never heard a kind of techno / lounge mixture before. I bought it, but then leant it to someone and never got it back.

Now I suspect they've been pretty swamped by (better?) soundalikes.

I only got the first album, which I also heard in a record shop. What do they sound like now? Isn't one of Tom Waits band in them? (I should really know the answer to this question).

Tipsy are excellent. No love for them on this board? Dense, loungey, fun and very rewarding. On Mike Patton's label. Don't let any of this put you off. A lot like Esquivel and if you know Esquivel thats all the recommendation you'll need.

Esquivel meets David Lynch. It could be a very weird Christmas.

Hinklepicker, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 04:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah its great stuff. their live shows are worth checking out as well. way more psychedelic and weird.

They are amazing!

Hooray for Tipsy! Any thoughts on which one is best? I am pretty familiar with Trip Tease and Uh Oh but not so with Buzzz. The first two are flawless I think. Its a whole crazy universe.

I love Tipsy. Have every album and listen to them all the time. I was listening to XXXmas today already. Uh Oh and the Remix one are my favourites but they are all excellent and pretty much as good as each other. Get them all!

In response to the post upthread that compares them to Lemon Jelly and the other one that calls them lounge/techno. One of the best things about them is that there is really no techno elements to their music at all. The remix album has maybe 2 tracks with an obvious drum machine but otherwise there's no bleeps, loops, beat or vocals ever. Most of the remixers respected that. The other albums are just tons of lounge or exotica albums mashed together to make new interesting tunes.

thought this would be about the j-kwon song :(

The track that got me into Tipsy was their remix of Pulp's "This Is Hardcore" - the Swedish Erotica mix as it's known. So amazing.

three years pass...

I cannot think of many who have made such a great trio of albums as Tipsy to so little fanfare. Yeah alright Esquivel said it all before but still there is an impious delirium to them that makes me smile. Some of the more out there stuff they did wouldn't sound out of place on a John Zorn/Dreamers recording. Underrated.

read that as "imperious delirium", which sounds v metal

Ha! try it anyways, despite my clumsy bollocks description. Not much metal but still imperious and occasionally delirious!

Jason Dowd, Sunday, 21 April 2013 01:34 (thirteen years ago)

they do a lot of one off warehouse secret gigs here in sf and they are killer live. agreed. very underrated band. i dj'ed with one of the members a few years back and his record collection is world class.

oscar, Sunday, 21 April 2013 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

wasn't criticizing "impious delirium", which i also love. i'm a fan, fwiw, though a casual one. i like what i've heard (mostly from a friend who adores them), but haven't heard much.

Haven't listened to them in a while, but Uh-Oh was one of my go-to LPs for a good few years.

emil.y, Sunday, 21 April 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

they are still active?

akm, Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

Don't really know much more than they are from SF and I recall someone telling me they do jingles for a living.
