A new NYC print mag, IRT, had a list of the Ten Greatest Albums from Queens in its first issue, and I like the list. Here it is:

1. Ramones -- Rocket to Russia
2. Run DMC -- Run DMC
3. Simon & Garfunkel -- Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme
4. A Tribe Called Quest -- Low End Theory
5. Murphy's Law -- Back With a Bong!
6. Nas -- Illmatic
7. Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo -- Wanted: Dead or Alive
8. Tony Bennett -- I Left My Heart In San Francisco
9. Fountains of Wayne -- Utopia Parkway
10. 3rd Bass -- Derelicts of Dialect

Honorable Mentions:
LL Cool J -- Mama Said Knock You Out
Mobb Deep -- The Infamous
Main Source -- Breaking Atoms
Organized Konfusion -- Stress
Jungle Brothers -- Straight Out the Jungle
MC Shain -- Down By Law
Mountain -- Climbing!
Gene Simmons -- Gene Simmons
Beatnuts -- Intoxicated Demons EP
Sick of It All -- Blood Sweat and No Tears

3rd Bass...oh man how I forgot about Pete Nice and MC Serch. I should get a big fat gasface for that.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

illmatic after simon and garfunkle = they are insane.

where the fuck is my demo cd?

haha 2/3 of main source is from canada

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

What?!?!? No KRAUT on the list (from Astoria)? NYC's first proper hardcore band gets no mention!??! Pfffff! What a crock.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(breaking atoms should still be up there over fountains of fucking wayne)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

what about Diamond Dogs?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

what a horrible list

gi66y, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

queens, eh? i nominate erasure, morrissey, and the pet shop boys.

( ... sorry, had to be done ... )

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I did it first...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I would've replaced Rocket to Russia with the first one, and Mama Said Knock You Out with an earlier one, as well.

Plus give a nod to Astoria's greek community (no idea on a particular album, tho)!

Also, are Fountains of Wayne really from Queens?

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I did it first...

akkk!!!! joke theft!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

lus give a nod to Astoria's greek community (no idea on a particular album, tho)!

why?

insectifly (insectifly), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Fountains of Wayne are actually from New Jersey, Hstencil. I guess the IRT people thought they were from Queens since Utopia Parkway is there...

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno, but I can't imagine something of at least some worth didn't come outta there. Could really stand for any Queens community. There's so many different ethnic groups in Queens, and this is a pretty (relatively) mainstream-centric list. Of course, I wouldn't know where to begin...

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I thought, d!390. I mean, their name is a ref to Wayne, NJ, right? That's about all I know about 'em, and all I'd wanna know.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

queen#1.....wow...what a debut....number2?everything that judas priest pretends to be.the list goes on.but "hot space" ..... sucked

georgia boy, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a stupid concept. Sort've like "the Ten Greatest Albums from Zip Code: 10005!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, for NYC that might not be a bad example. Might not work for the rest of the country's zip codes, tho.

hstencil, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

how bout the best albums from the M5L postal code?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

best album from the IP32 uk post code miss black america - god bless miss black america

gi66y, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont think it is a stupid concept, not much stupider than asking the types of questions often posted on this board (Im not calling these questions stupid either, as I quite enjoy them).

insectifly (insectifly), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the concept more than the list, to be honest. I think issue 2 is gonna have a "Best of Brooklyn" tally.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

for once, i completely agree with jess. although intoxicated demons is great, i might have given the nod to the beatnuts self-titled cd (and maybe even stone crazy, although i'm probably alone on that one). anyone heard the new one? i hope it's at least better than their two previous ones.

and i really like the concept. it would've been cool if they'd represented all the boroughs though.

“Behold the burning malice of a treacherous soul/ First time I shot a gun, duke, I was 12 years old.”

Sam C, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Weren't Ism -- of "John Hinckley Jr. (What Has Jody Done To You)" fame -- from Queens as well?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

New York Dolls? I think at least one of them was from Queens, but I'm not sure. They were all from the outer boroughs, I know that.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Johnny Thunders was, I think.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

EAST! RIVER! PIPE!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a SECOND... Didn't ATCQ come from Long Island?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I think issue 2 is gonna have a "Best of Brooklyn" tally.

Neil Sedaka reprazent!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Last fall I worked off of Utopia Parkway!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme" is not better than "Illmatic". "Bookends" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water", however, are. And "Utopia Parkway" is the only truly great album on that list anyway. I'd like to see fucking Tony Bennett or the Beatnuts come up with something a twelth as good as "Will you stop pretending I've never been born/Now I look a little more like that guy from KoRn?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

What, then, are the top ten greatest BROOKLYN albums?

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

What criteria are we using?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"What criteria are we using?"

Nothing involving rational thought, apparently.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Songs for the deaf

man, Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Last fall I worked off of Utopia Parkway!

I grew up there:)

insectifly (insectifly), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

So did John Zorn.
