Best unwanted album/single from a friend

OK, I'm not talking about promos or birthday presents or suchlike here, but what is the best music you've been given by someone who hated it themselves and just wanted to, well, get rid of it.

For me it has to by My Bloody Valentine's 'Isn't Anything', an album which I since went on to actually buy after wearing out my copy! He thought it terrible, jangly and weak, I couldn't disagree more thinking it exceptional, powerful and life changing.

Also what have you given away yourself 'cos it both sucks and blows?

Hmmm -- good question -- There hasn't been many, but Don Caballero 2 was a pretty nice piece of trash -- as was Dolomite's Of The Angels. ¥

In 1985, a hip hop fan down the hall from me (college dorm) gave me the 12" of "She's On It" by the Beastie Boys, decrying it as "lame Punk Rock shit!"

When I was at university, I had a friend who was desperately trying to "get into" jazz, incorporate it into his sad hipster persona. I ended up with his copies of "A Love Supreme" and "Straight, No Chaser."

No one gives me music they hate. I've given my brother a Megadeth "Cryptic Writings" CD, awful except for one song, and a Santana "Evil Ways" CD.

A colleague left a couple of discs on my desk just recently, KISS ALIVE III (not the scheduled but suddenly deleted ALIVE IV, mind you, but the make-up-less rendition from the early 90s) and Black Sabbath's REUNION. Two live albums from bands well, well, well past their prime. Both tragic.

An alcohol crazy-person who happened to be my room-mate once couldn't pay the rent one month, so instead he gave me John Zorn's Masada #I-V, a bootleg of a Smashing Pumpkins concert circa '93, and a Japanese 2-disc import of Bucketheadland. Best rent payment evah!

Excuse me, an "alcohoLIC crazy-person"...

Carry on.

I once traded Game Theory's LOLITA NATION to my goth-loving college roommate. He got a lousy Lydia Lunch/Rowland Howard LP in exchange.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, meaning I got the Game Theory LP.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 30 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

well i've had a loan of the blueprint for ages off a friend who didn't really like it
i will give it back at some stage though

My copy of "Double Nickles on the Dime" is a cast-off.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Lou Reed's "Take No Prisoners" . Not given to me so much as I borrowed it and never returned it. He didn't like it anyway - "All Lou does is talk.."

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

couldn't call them exactly "unwanted" (in the sense of "not liked") by the giver, but i got a few vinyls from a good friend & ex-colleague some years ago - he was moving house and apparently had decided to get rid of most of his LPs at that point,
which for me meant (a.o.) Sun Ra's 'Stange Celestial Road', Prefab Sprout's 'From Langley Park To Memphis' and Can's 'Rite Time'
(...and now my record player gathers dust ot top of a wardrobe...)

I loaned a guy who painted my house a Howling Wolf cd which was returned with a Gregg Allman solo disc in the case. Not fair.

dan (dan), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

nobody ever gives me music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

dan -- i loaned to a guy, who's like the most sensible pal of my teenaged son, my copy of Primal Sream's 'Echo Dek'.
(as wasn't to be expected) he returned just the case. even more unfair, i'd say ;>)

I gave my roommate the last Spiritualized album and the new Future Bible Heroes because they sucked... He loved the first and agreed with me on the second.

phil-two, Saturday, 1 February 2003 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

A friend of mine gave me a French Kicks album that he couldn't be bothered to listen to because he thought they'd sound like The Str*kes and they didn't. It rocked my UNIVERSE, so it only goes to show.

Oh, and the Raveonettes was a cast-off promo from Suzy which I adopted as bubblegum goodness.

And I ended up giving my free promo of BRMC to someone who ended up loving it more than life.

So, what comes around goes around. If you don't like something, pass it on.

kate, Saturday, 1 February 2003 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend gave me an Eggs album that was pretty good. And another friend gave me the Paul Westerberg Mono/Stereo set, because he'd bought another copy to get it signed.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 1 February 2003 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

a promo copy of herbert's "bodily functions"! he didn't like house or jazz or jazz-house or microjazzhouse.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 1 February 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike A, you sure got over on that Game Theory swap!
