Adult Swim - best music on TV? S&D

I'm specifically referring to Lupin III, the anime show that comes on midnight EST weekdays. But other shows have quality stuff too, esp. theme tunes. Sealab 2021 & Aqua Teen Hunger Force come to mind.

Yr faves/discuss/etc.

(another thread doomed to die)

let's not forget the opening theme to the otherwise disposable Brak Show.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Sonny Sharrock's Space Ghost Coast To Coast theme, all of Dwayne's musical numbers on Home Movies, the entire Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.

Destroy: the dumb, overly chirpy Sealab 2021 theme.

See also: Reruns of The Adventures of Pete and Pete on The N. 90's indie nostalgia ho!

There are GREAT Lupin III CD compilations!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sealab does usually have awesome incidental music, though, particularly on the "Quinn has a 'Waking Life'-mocking hallucinogenic experience" and "Murphy starts a pirate radio station" episodes.

I find it harder to pick the funnier Aqua Teen musical moment: the entirety of "MC Pee Pants" -- which not only featured the godlike "I Want Candy", but also Master Shake's aborted metal ballad songwriting attempt ("you make me feel... emo-shun-uhhhl!") -- or Mooninites episode featuring the belt with magical Foreigner Powers.

Mary - show me the way. I need to find a good importer of such things.

Mary is required to point out to me which Lupin III albums are good and which ones I can skip. Because Amazon has 27 and I can't afford that many imports. Yet.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Where d'ya live Miller time? Other Music used to be a great carrier of such things, but sadly no longer. Check this out: Readymade Records (P5's Konishi Yasuharu's label) put out Readymade Records, Tokyo -- The Remixes. Not strictly a Lupin fest, but has 4 Lupin songs on a great comp: a UFO remix, Masanori Ikeda --Escalator records chief -- remix, P5 remix, and Fantastic Plastic Machine remix. Lots of other good stuff on this album too , and of course, the urgent and key album art that one would expect. I used to have a pure Lupin CD with similar stuff but that must not have been so good since I sold it back, or I was really poor then. It was from Readymade too, or ********* as they call it, but for some reason I liked the other one better. I just checked Amazon, you can get both there, the first one is reasonably priced cause it was put out by Bungalow. (It was realeased in '98 so I hope it doesn't sound too old for you.) Also, if you ever need stuff that you can't track down, there is Comfort Records, this nice guy in Kyoto who specializes in all this nice artsy J-pop, he sends stuff to you super quick and you can send him American dollars. (It was released in '98 so I hope it doesn't sound too old for you.) Tower Japan is also reliable, though $$. Then again there's tons of more middling compilations that might get the sound of the real Sat. afternoon cartoon thing better, you could get those at a Japanese bookstore like Kinokuniya or Asahiya, depending again, of course, on where you live.

Ha ha I just saw your new post. Above is my twee sense of what you should listen to.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops forgot to mention -- the other CD is called Punch the Monkey.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, m.c. chris is the shit. fuck the streets AND eminem. and mc pitman. and everything and everyone. hard.

i was actually going to post about him back when he had mp3s of his first cd up on his website, but they're gone now. so i just share them on soulseek.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

The Franz Kafka rock opera on Home Movies was the best ever.

ALL HAIL BRAK!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 30 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ditto on the basic premise, but special props to Home Movies.
Of course, the hilarious music is only one part of the
brilliant package. HM ranks among the best comedy I've
seen in any format. Does anyone know anything about the
people behind the show, or any other projects they've
been involved with?

On a related note, has anyone heard or seen the videos
for the album, "Dexter's Lab: The Hip-Hop Experiment?"
I've only seen the video for "Secrets," which has
whetted my appetite for the main course, featuring
contributions from the Handsome Boys of hip-hop,
Prince Paul and Dan Nakamura.

Squirl_Police, Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought the Dexter's lab record. The Will.i.am track is completely worth it, the rest are so-so really.

The HM folx I believe are the same people who were behind 'Dr. Katz' which was on Comedy Central some years back I believe. It was animated in the same style, Jonathan Katz voiced a psychiatrist who would see various guest comedians, usually one per episode. Mitch Hedberg voices one of the characters on HM and he's about the funniest motherfucker around at the moment.

I finally got my Lupin III OST CD, the US edition (coincides w/ Pioneer's release of the first DVD set of episodes) and it is SAWEEEEET. I am loving this bidness. It's like the whole popshopping sound, but reproduced much better, and more chillout*. I am SOLD. My next goal might be the TRIGUN OST, if it's available stateside in a nicely packaged format. I like the reverse pedal steel etc. Why do Japanese cartoons get such excellent soundtracks while popular American sitcoms get music like Seinfeld's sharkjumping MIDI slap bass? Foul!!!

*I could make out to like nine sluts with these choons.

They don't show Lupin on Adult Swim anymore *cry*

Lupin 3 is back on, with some new episodes. The new format is brilliant. I visited the official message board and it seems there is a great deal of interest in the instrumentals being played over the new instrumentals. Here's what I discovered:

Algorithm: Banana Clip Volume 3 (Instrumentals)
Counterflow Recordings

Fat Jon as Maurice Galactica: Humanoid Erotica
Counterflow Recordings

Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician: Lightweight Heavy
Dimid Recordings

Jay Dee of the Ummah: Vintage-Unreleased Instrumentals

Jay Dee: The Official Jay Dee Instrumental Series Unreleased Volume 1

Apparently the Jay Dee stuff is also available more or less directly from http://www.bling47.com/ .

instumentals being played over the new instrumentals = I meant to post this to the tautological instrumentals thread

The P5 mix of the Lupin theme is the best song ever and I stand by that til the day I die or download a new song.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a P5 version too? I have a Fantastic Plastic Machine remix of it that rocks socks.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic Plastic Machine rocks period.

Also, the music they use between shows rocks too. I think they used Amon Tobin before.

They once listed music they liked actually, and a lot was good, but... they listed The Mars Volta. Not so good.

Favorite Home Movies song: "Don't stick marbles in your mouth."

David Allen, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Home Movies theme music.

The music from FLCL is fabulous. Though I imagine that's not a long-running installment, there are only 6 episodes in the series. Saw parts of it about a month ago.

The Teen Titans theme song is awesome, speaking of American cartoon theme songs. It's not on Adult Swim, but it is on Cartoon Network.

Here is the link to a funky ska version of the series 2 Lupin III theme: http://www.mondoscuola.it/mp3/ascolta/ascolta.asp?id=325 Listen to it right online!
