RFI: how do you get your uk garage?

matos mentioned a 'history of ukgarage' as compiled by simon reynolds on the other thread, and i am jealous. for those of us who do not have access to big-rock-crit types, how do *you* go about getting hold of current ukg without buying arseloads of 12"es or taping pirate radio in london?

or to put it another way, i loved that dizzy rascal song and the good tunes on that 'crews control' comp and i want more. matos? ronan? bueller? anybody?

Radio1 Xtra has streaming shows which you can record using Total Recorder and then burn to disc or convert to .mp3

also, many of these tracks are available through soulseek (how I found Dizzy Rascal for instance).

maybe simon could do all us good folk a CD-R?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 30 January 2003 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks spencer, just went to the xtra website. hmm, who should i record? based on pictures alone, heartless crew look promising.
also very happy to hear that more fire have an album coming out(!).

the more fire album is a tremendous disappointment. the dizzy-produced track is good though.

email me privately if you want a copy of the Reynolds, I'm up for a trade or two

the best way i find is buying diy mix tapes from a stall on camden market (in fact their may be 2 or 3). they're cheap at usually 3 quid a go and contain all the latest shit

but if you're not in london then uh i can't help

apparently wiley of rolldeep crew is so anti-distribution that he drives up the m11 meeting shop owners from outside london and sells white labels from the boot of his car

on Radio 1 make sure you check out The Dreem Teem's show too
their UK garage selection is broader, less sound-specialist (admittedly: less radical)
and their Hot Box 10 always contains some of the best tracks of the moment

plus you'll get to hear a few US/-style tracks
like recent faves: Erro - (Don't) Change For Me (Joey Negro mix) and Sandy Rivera - Changes (MJ Cole mix)

toby whats yr username? (i'm dubplatestyle, natch.) i have an ever shrinking/growing "garage rap" folder.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

it always takes a while to find any dizzee rascal on slsk due to the confusion over the spelling of his name: i've got a good dj slimzee (of rolldeep) mix in my downloads folder def recommended - my username is Sean Fuck

Mary was OTM. The Reynolds article was good (although not so sure how I feel about the punk comparison - it feels too cliched and easy to compare anything to punk). Anyone else read it?

I use the moron method: the import compilation bin at tower records.

Pro: Much better UKG selection than my local indie stores.
Con: Outrageously expensive.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i thought it was a good read. i was really unhappy with my own piece, but thankfully only the citizens of chicago were subjected to it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

btw, everyone should go to http://www.ukgmusic.cjb.net and download the mj cole/elephant man track, the agent x/kele le roc, the sticky remix of "dem lott's ere now" (for starters.)

vahid, if you're talking about Tower Records in The Village, New York
check the imports listening station endcap on the main (pop) floor
the listening station titles and new releases often go on sale

the import comps section in the basement has the biggest selection
of UK garage comps of any shop in the U.S.
