Hype as a Signpost

Something you read a lot online is, "I thought [x] band would be shit because [y collective] was talking about how great they are." That is, people assume they're going to hate some kind of music based on who likes it (certain magazine, "hipsters," etc.)

What's up with this? Is it just an unconcious attempt to differentiate yourself from the masses, whether mainstream or "hipster"? Are the positive reactions of others ever really a good indicator that you'll wind up hating something?

Well, over time you, as an individual, simply learn that there are some other individuals, and some groups, whose taste definitely doesn't gel with your own, whether they are hyping or praising faintly. I don't know about rejecting anything that's hyped by anyone though, as there are boudn to be some sources you largely agree with.

There's also all kinds of hype. Simple word-of-mouth is a lot different, to me, than reading someone's "street team" spam on a message board.
