Burrito Deluxe

I have just been fortunate enough to receive a copy of the Flying Burrito Brothers' BURRITO DELUXE. It's my new rough-hewn gravel road into the origins of country rock.

What (songs, playing, moments, lyrics, whatever) should I listen out for in particular?

Personally, I thought that their version of "Wild Horses" trumped both the Stones and the Sundays.

I hate to say it Pinefox, but most of the FBB highlights - 'Wild Horses' excepted - are prob. on 'The Guilded Palace of Sin', esp. 'Hot Burrito #1' and 'Hot Burrito #2' (you might know the latter as 'I'm Your Toy' - Elvis Costello does it, on his 'country' alb I think.)

But listen out for - the grain of Gram's voice, so sad.

i like that version of "farther along"... it's better done than when attempted by hillman with the byrds.

Has it got 'Man in the Fog' on it? I can't remember what's on it. I used to have it, but now I have 'Out of the Blue', which is a space-saving compilation. My favourite Gram-less later songs are 'Tried So Hard' and 'All Alone'. 'Cody Cody' gets the thumbs-up too. But it's true the earlier album is better. So much so that the songs I mention are probably on it.

BONUS INFORMATION: They wore something called 'nudie suits'.

Not 100% accurate abt the 'nudie suits' PJ. Gram's marijuna leaf suit, as sported on the cov of 'Gilded Palace...', was made by Nudie of Hollywood, a showbiz clobber outfit that also made Elvis P's famous gold lame suit.

I thot this wz a thread abt burritos. :(

I'm not 100% sure about what you mean Andrew about PJ not being 100% accurate. They did wear Nudie Suits. I think Nudie's shop was called Nudie's Rodeo Tailors, but everyone I know calls them Nudie Suits. I'm pretty sure Porter Wagoner still wears one on the Grand Ol' Opry every week. I'm pretty sure the Country Music Hall of Fame has quite a few Nudie's on display.

Thanks for the clarification, Sara; sorry to have questioned yr authority, PJ.

Nudie's Rodeo Tailors = Best Shop Name Ever!

(I'm not an authority, I only mentioned it in the hope that The Pinefox would get one.)

I had a listen to The Flying Burrito Brothers this morning. I now prefer George Jones and Merle Haggard, because they are real men.

My father has two (2!) Nudie Suits from his country rock playing days. Both are covered with tits and weed. I wanna steal them.

Parcel one up for The Pinefox!

"Further Along" is wonderful; love the way the bouncing piano intro. So is "Cody Cody". There are a few good other ones, but Guilded Palace of Sin is the one to get...

one month passes...
you can buy a double cd called hot burritos for 20 bucks and it has everything the flying burrito brothers ever recorded. and yes, i can't argue that gilded palace is the bottom line in the catalog but i believe burrito deluxe is one of the 100 most underrated albums of all time. a lot of people completely write it off and a lot of their later stuff, even post gram is wunderbar!! the easiest step into older, maybe more "real" country and still feel cool - just buy the live prison albums by johnny cash.

Also, a girl may be worth keeping if you could make love to her listening to the Flying Burrito Brothers.

five years pass...

i have always found Burrito Deluxe to be just as solid as GPoS.

and the "older guys" video is literally my favorite thing of all time:

The S/T post Gram is even more underrated than Burrito Deluxe and well worth getting - fine versions of Merle's White Line Fever, and of Tried so Hard

there's a new book out about parsons & the burrito bros. that apparently completely tears gram a new one. it's supposed to hillman's take on the whole thing and boy does he hold a grudge. he makes parsons out to be a lazy poseur who did not contribute half as much to the first record as is commonly believed. sounds like sour grapes from hillman but you can't exactly blame him for being pissed off at parsons' cult.
