Opinion on this seems to run the gamut from "greatest film soundtrack ever recorded" to "depressing failure". Should I buy it?

(Never seen the movie. Loved the book as an adolescent - would probably loathe it now).

The movie has got very little to do with the actual text of the book, rather being a fantasy / fable based around the writing of the book. It's pretty good, but shouldn't have really had the "Naked Lunch" title applied to it, it misleads a lot of people. The soundtrack is wild and perfect, although I imagine its a pretty hard listen outside of the film.

read a recent croneberg interview and (this is maybe a vague recollection) he said that some of it was based on diary entries, some stuff on 'queer'.

fantastic soundtrack. my old roommate used to play it loud at the liquour store he worked at ... scared the bejesus out of all the old drunks.

but seriously, the reinterpretation of coleman's "lonely woman" is wonderful. it was one of free jazz's finest hours to begin with, but this version is a nice ... i dunno ... modernization? recontextualization? it works, anyway.
