Anti Pop Consortium and associates - Classic or Dud?

After having listened to two albums and a side-project (beans's new album) I've come to the conclusion that for all their boasting about being a hyper-developed form of hiphop, they are in fact a bunch of talentless no-hopers trying to appeal to NME-reading chin scratchers with badly produced and badly rapped travesties containing long words in overlong sentences to make themselves look intelligent. Listen to Beans's album - the beats aren't minimalist THEY'RE SHIT. The raps make no sense at all and are so abstract it gets boring. cloudDEAD suffer from this too by rapping about falling bicycles and saying things like "Space is potent". Hmm... Deep, very deep. But at least clouDEAD sometimes break through with an interesting musical arrangement. The few times APC manage to do this (search: "9.99"), it does work and it makes you wonder why all their songs cant be like that.

Obviously I'm playing devil's advocate here. I by no means hate APC, and i do like to listen to them every so often, but really, i don't understand the hype.

APC - genius or overrated? Discuss

I'm too put off by their name and the press about them to attempt to listen. Sounds too academic.

andy, Friday, 31 January 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't believe the hype. You think they're crap via studio recordings? I had the misfortune of seeing them live and I'd sum it up as: APC wasn't wearing any clothes. They weren't "raw" live, they were amateurs.

And I apologize in advance to every amateur I just insulted.

nader (nader), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

is bean's new album really that bad??? i haven't heard it, but i've always enjoyed apc and i thought they were amazing live - i've never seen any hophop act even try what they do live. you gotta give them points for originality at the very least.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

but 'Ghost Lawns' is 'MAZIN! i like the 'Arrhythmia' album and a few track from their others...i did rave about them on ILM a while back but yeh i think i got a bit carried away - they aint quite all that, just some very neat little ideas and concepts here and there

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"Human Shield" is deadly. They may not be All That, but they're most of it.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i am listening to tragic epilogue right now and it still sounds pretty good

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

ok i am apc's bitch

i cannot explain to their genius nor my love for them

zemko (bob), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

'Disorientation' is still my favourite, probably

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"...amazing live..."

Please, do go on.

Maybe it was just a really off night for APC, but when I caught the hype machine at TT the Bear's in Cambridge, (Mass.):

a) the beats were repetitive, nay, re-dun-dant
b) they were not qualifed to run their own machines (drum, cpu, et al)
c) rhythm? who needs rhythm?

nader (nader), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't find the beats redundant at all, i got the feeling they were kinda jamming things out at certain points and i thougth that was well done. and i thought their abiltity to rhyme while playing a drum machine and whatever the hell else was up there (sampler ect.) was brilliant.

but they do seem "raw" and unrehearsed to a degree, and it worked when i saw them and perhpas their formula just wasn't working when you caught them. also dj vadim played after them and sucked so bad i suppose mili vanilli would've seemed great in contrast.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 31 January 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I think they would be great if the MCs had better voices. I swear, one of those guys sounds like a rather fat and old transvestite. I have so much trouble getting over his voice that further analysis has proven difficult.. but I could see myself appreciating them otherwise

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha that's prob priest! he likes bowie and bauhaus

zemko (bob), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

A man of taste and vision!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

zemko (bob), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"i got the shit that blow the hair off ya face like billy corrigan/from plymouth rock to portland oregon/cats be like 'go back to the store again/ i want some more of him/ two fills and a quart of gin/ a bottle of cortisone and a pen'/hence then..."

zemko (bob), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i could go on for days, i am a fanboy here

zemko (bob), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

see i could produce a beautiful blow by blow rebuttal (wiggle wiggle) to the original screed but how do i even start on "NME-reading chin scratchers"?

zemko (bob), Saturday, 1 February 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm, let me mull that over for a while i wank over Kelly Osbourne...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 February 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually quite looking forward to the days when NME readers become chin-scratchers again, because that whole Getting Enormously Excited Over Awful, Awful Bands thing is really getting old- bring on the cynicism, I sez...

Classic for "Bubblz" alone - - proper headphones music. I haven't heard the beans album.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel that this may be "rap that Nate Patrin likes", as evidenced here:

The Majesticons - Beauty Party: C/D

But I may be wrong.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I've barely heard a word about it and early responses were pretty negative, but fuck it, I like the Antipop vs. Matthew Shipp album a lot. May not be their best as far as Antipop goes, but I didn't have much for expectations.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Nordicskillz, Bubblz is HOT. I still don't like 75% of their stuff.

Revive!

Why? Cos Beans is playing at 93 Feet East tonight and I'm very excited that I finaally get to see him live.

Anyone else going? LooseLippedStevie/Stevem? You bloody ought to be...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and Beans's Now Soon Someday remix mini-album is fab, better than the actual album. Prefuse 73 mix especially, er, special.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 19 February 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

can't make it but let me know how it went

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 February 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Bump for upcoming reunion and the fact that I'm blasting Tragic Epilogue. I miss these guys!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 8 March 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)
