my friend's comment on the raveonettes, which i think sums it up nicely : "this sounds like every band we played with in 1996."
super super dull, and the whole "ooh they're sexy thing" leaves me scratching my head in bewilderment. everyone i know is better-looking than them!

I saw the video for "Attack of the Ghost Riders" on MTV2 a while ago and bought Whip It On as a result (that and it was $5). I've listened to it once or twice, and it certainly seems like the single is the one true standout. Overall not that interesting though.

I tried to get into them, hoping from reviews that they were a poppier BRMC. unfortunately they suck almost as bad as BRMC due to their complete and utter lack of hooks and melody - and the sound is only OK. However, the woman in the band is rather sexy.

I saw 'em last Thursday at an NME extravaganza opening for Ladytron and Ikara Colt and Soundtrack of Our Lives.

My verdict? Yawn. I honestly cannot remember what they sounded like. They were *that* mundane/boring/whateverone else is doing nowadays.

Except for the drum sound. They do something neat with the drums that make them sound really snare-y and studio-ish. Anyone know anything about this? Triggers? Mic placement?

I've only heard "Attack of the Ghost Riders", and the only part of it that I like is the dissonant bridge. The rest of it (including the video) is blah.

Although this paragraph, taken from their bio, is kinda cool in a "how uber-hip can we possibly get" way:

"Drawing on cultural as well as musical influences, the Raveonettes have taken their inspiration from trashy B movies for Whip It On's packaging and Denmark's Dogme95 theoretical film collective for the current incarnation of their sound. When it came time to record their band's debut, Sune and Sharin decided to work within a set of prescribed rules: e.g., a) all the songs would be recorded in the same key: Bb minor; b) no more than three chords were allowed; c) each song had to be under three minutes; d) no high hat or ride cymbals were allowed in recording the album."

they just piss me off because they ripped "midget submarines" for "attack of the ghost riders" (EXACT! SAME! RIFF!) and didn't do anything worth hearing with it.

There was a brief interview with them on 120 Minutes over the weekend (first time watching Empty V in years) and based on how they described themselves I expected the Jesus And Mary Chain with some sort of ingenue singer - not the Cramps as designed by Martha Stewart.

Friend of mine just lent me this album after I said I really enjoyed the track "Beat City" (which I do). Played the album. They really don't deviate from that one sound, do they? Oh well.....it's still a great track.

Raveonettes are great. I like the way they're so pleased with themselves at being able to recreate a certain sound so accurately.

I think the full-length's fantastic, and I was not all that into the E.P.
Search "The Love Gang" from the full length, where it goes from the real pretty Buddy-Holly-if-sung-by-a-super-stoned-girl verse into absolute reverbed-out-white-noise. Gorgeous.

i should hate this record and its mannerisms, but the songs are generally undeniable. great songs always win.

I avoided the Raveonettes because of the hype and the "rock revival" stuff, but both of they're great. Nothing groundbreaking or unique, and yeah, the album kind of blends together, but sweet sweet noise and fun songs.

I wuv them. on a first listen their album sounds like enjoyable sub-JAMC fluff, but on repeated listens it drills inside your head as uber enjoyable sub-JAMC fluff.
