I haven't heard that much from either, but from what I've heard, I think I'm more of a Nino Rota man.

morricone for the twisted arrangements of his earlier material but rota by a long shot for his melodies and wit.

I can't believe this hasn't gotten more responses!

anyhow, I side with Morricone although I've heard alot more Morricone I didn't like than I've heard Rota I didn't like.

Morricone!! Although I think his quality has dropped since the mid-'80s. His stuff with vocalist Edda DellOrso (sp?) is amazing.

i'm sure i've heard rota, but i have several of morricone's soundtracks that dagored re-issued in the last couple years and love them... it's kinda weird, i would have never got into morricone if i didn't buy john zorn's "the big gundown" ... that seems backwards doesn't it?

so anyways, i have to side with morricone just based on experience.

two years pass...
Revive. I still haven't heard much of either. (I don't see many movies, for one thing.)

six months pass...
Revive! Another Morricone partisan here, but I'd love any Nino Rota recommendations past The Godfather. Are any of his Fellini scores good starting places?

yes. I think Rota clicked in with 'la strada' and gave his best work overall to Fellini.

the soundtrack to Juliet of the Spirits is my favorite. weird tuneful psychedelia, kitsch, lounge & bafflement, and it forms an intact suite. It's just a really weird record. I lived with a tape of it for several years before seeing the film, which for me wasn't able to live up to it, I think it's the best.

also the entire ost's for 8 1/2 & La Dolce Vita, can't miss with those. more traditionally beautiful.

There are several different compilation overviews of the Fellini scores. The one I own seems not to have made it to CD, but it's on Silva Records and called Fellini / Rota and it's incredible if you can find it.

There's one currently in print called The Symphonic Fellini, different recordings, but... I can't see how bad it could be and I'm probably going to buy it before midnight, just to check.

Morricone's great too and deciding between them is pointless

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Greatest italian musicians ever? probably yes.
Unfortunately the soundtrack Morricone composed for Mario Bava's "Diabolik" is still out of print: a fantastic mix of psychedelic beat, twisted bossa and sheer Morricone magic. One of his best.

Milton otm about the "Giulietta degli Spiriti" soundtrack: but the movie is fantastic too!

the soundtrack to Juliet of the Spirits is my favorite.

Actually, that's the only one I have, and I still have never seen the movie.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

"Actually, that's the only one I have, and I still have never seen the movie"

watch it if you can: not perfect, but painfully personal.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

it's definitely worth seeing. would like to see it again sometime. of the later films, I do like Roma. Oh Neon Pope. And the last scene of Orchestra Rehearsal really stayed with me.

Fellini Rota did make it to CD:

Rota: get Casanova . You must. It's beautiful.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

and Satyricon is great for its un-Rota-ness. Lots of blaring horns, chanting in strange languages, percussion, some field recordings from the South Pacific, dissonance. It's one of the most perfect, alien soundtracks ever.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

I ordered the Fellini Rota disc I just linked to -- and it's _not_ the same album I remember, it's a compilation that mixes in several very recent re-recordings, including a klutzy one for sampling keyboard. It's still got its moments but you're much better off just buying one of the original soundtracks.

Jay Vee just got me to buy a copy of Casanova... I'm not sure if the original Satyricon ever made it to CD but hunting that one down to...

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 1 October 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

too

I'm not sure if the original Satyricon ever made it to CD but hunting that one down to(o)...

Hi - it did pretty recently as part of a 2CD set on GDM Club which also contains "Toby Dammit" and what looks like a complete version of "Roma". I've heard that "Satyricon" may not be from master tapes, but I've not heard it to make any comment about how good it sounds.

Pangolino 2, Saturday, 1 October 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

My Satyricon's a used copy of the original vinyl; in beautiful shape, but I would love to hear what the CD version sounds like.

Would love to read what you think of Fellini's Casanova , Milton.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Sunday, 2 October 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Couldn't somebody please release a nice box set of both's complete works and make my life easier (and better)?

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Sunday, 2 October 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

haha a box set of Morricone's complete works -- are you insane?? That would put the Ellington RCA and Sinatra Capital boxes to shame. It would undoubtedly surpass that 153 CD complete Bach box that Teldec put out a couple years back. That's not to say I wouldn't die to have one though...

I have some 10 CD Japanese thing that basically covers his early pop productions. It's not all that interesting, tons of straight pop vocal tracks. There is some good instrumental stuff on it though.
