robin (robin), Thursday, 13 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i had been using kazaa and it felt like going behind someone's back.
it was like it knew too, as when i tried to re-load slsk while kazaa was still on my desktop it went really slow, then when i got rid completely it was aok.

soulseek baby

piscesboy, Thursday, 13 February 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuckin' yeah!! Fucked Up Inside!! The Southern Oklahoma Cosmic Trigger Contest!! Lisa's Got Hives!! Pure Guava!! Huzzahs!!

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 13 February 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...

Does anyone know has Soulseek died on its arse agin? I can't get anywhere with it over the last few days.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

it's worked for me

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 13 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Gatinha, did you go to www.slsk.org and get the new test version? I think they're on version 9 or something now. worked fine for me today.

Jonathan, Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, it seems to be fine now cheers. I've gotta lotta files though, so it takes a loooooooooooooooooong time to get up and running;

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Sunday, 13 April 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Testing is now finished, and version 145 is now out. It uses a new network and has a more decentralised architecture, which is resulting in more search results than before. It is kind of lonely in the ILM room on my own though, so update now!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 14 April 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I use psylsk for linux, and can't get on to the server. Anyone hear about a new pyslsk version? Can't seem to find anything so far...

cprek (cprek), Monday, 14 April 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone ever paid the $5 for download privileges? does it work?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yes and yes

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

yes and YES

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

What are the advantages to doing this?

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Queuejumping.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, don't really know what you mean...first access to stuff that others are also looking for?

s woods, Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want something from someone who has 1130 files in her/his queue, you will either be shot to the front or very close to it (it's usually the latter).

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

he's not exaggerating

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I not use slsk until I do the upgrade? Cos that's what seems to be happening.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

it wasn't working for me and then I did the upgrade and now it's working no problem so maybe/probably/yes

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

so if you upgrade to the new version do you have to re-enter all of your userlist by hand?

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i didnt, just let the new version replace your old one by installing it in the same place

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

cool.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 15 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The ILM room has only two people in it. Very sad and lonely.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

is it currently working for anyone? Kenan? no luck past 2 days (with the new version)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 17 April 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"Soulseek is broken. Please come back tomorrow."

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks Andy (it looks so like Ingram's blog!)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

146b is the new version -- they made sure to negate my session last night by telling me the version I downloaded like 2 days ago is obsolete. Wait until the morning, dudes! Anyway, it worked for me after I upgraded.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 17 April 2003 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I still use slsk because nothing has improved upon it afaic.

tanuki, Friday, 23 March 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

its certainly become more useful again with the apparent mediafire google blackout

akm, Saturday, 24 March 2012 04:47 (fourteen years ago)

Started using it again and built a jazz vocal comp really quick. Well done internet(s)!

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 24 March 2012 09:33 (fourteen years ago)

The Reverend, Saturday, 24 March 2012 10:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think it has like 5000 users worldwide, ;) but those users are such popnerds that they share 99% of the popmusic written since 1945

You nailed it!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Saturday, 24 March 2012 11:20 (fourteen years ago)

I love Soulseek because when you find some skip and stutter filled 96k rip of an obscure album on the blogs there's almost always some dude on Soulseek with a 320 version.

benernienie taumaupin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 25 March 2012 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

<3 slsk for old times sake, still use it sometimes

The term “hipster racism” from Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious (nakhchivan), Sunday, 25 March 2012 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

I use Soulseekqt. There's really nothing like it. Full albums, great quality and yes, it's filled with nerds that have the strangest music I wouldn't get a hold of otherwise.

The major labels don't really care about it. Not influential enough. Besides, most of the music shared in there isn't really of concern to them. Saying it has only 5,000 users is a bit of a stretch tho. I'd say it's more like 50,000.

Moka, Sunday, 25 March 2012 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

yeah there are a bunch of user, though with mag-is-ka now i never use Soulseek.

good luck Peeta Mellark (Bee OK), Sunday, 25 March 2012 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

man i haven't used soulseek since i first found ilx like 6 years ago (!)

QT is a thing i should try?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

Just moved from a normal pc to one of these strange Mac type computers - can't seem to get SLSK working at all. Is it not possible to get on Mac or am I doing something wrong?

Yours Frustrated.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 25 March 2012 08:26 (fourteen years ago)

you need to use SoulseekQT

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 25 March 2012 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

by the way, I have been using Soulseek for about 10 years now and I still have no idea what "privileges" are

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 25 March 2012 09:41 (fourteen years ago)

You donate and get punted to the front of queues iirc

So this soulseekQT actually works? I could never find a Mac client that worked as good as the Windows version.

pagan diskow (Crackle Box), Sunday, 25 March 2012 09:53 (fourteen years ago)

yep it's good, interface is a bit clunkier than the pc version but it works fine

jabba hands, Sunday, 25 March 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

I still user ssX. It's fine.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

i love that there are still soulseek users, you guys are like civil war re-enactors or steam train enthusiasts or something

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Sunday, 25 March 2012 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

Soulseek has not evolved since 2003 or something and that is what is beautiful about it. God bless the popnerds that keep it alive.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

I've been using sxs for ages, will try this soulseekQT

akm, Sunday, 25 March 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

To those saying we're like civil war reenactors, then what is the 'modern' choice for p2p?

Moka, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

bittorrent? megaupload type sites?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

Cause I've honestly haven't found anything better. It's like the civil war was fought with laser guns and 10 years later people started fighting with powder guns instead.

bittorrent? megaupload type sites?

― A Little Princess btw (s1ocki)

You have to download the full albums and that's a hassle when you're only looking for one specific song and even then you have to go to the trouble of finding whatever it is you're looking for. Also obscure or underground artists are impossible to find.

Moka, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

Man, Í love soulseek. I've dwindled the amount of time I spend on it and the amount of tunes I get, but I would be lost if SLSK suddenly disappeared. I rarely get music anywhere else and I only have mp3s of about 20% of my favorite tunes. Many pc switches and complete drive wipes over the years has left me getting songs I like only when I'm in the mood to hear them. I'm not particularly interested in owning every bit of music I've ever enjoyed when I can always find it for when I do want hard copies.

I might be alone on ILX thinking that way. I picture most music nerds as collectors and not guys that are content with nothing more than their own limited supply and access to youtube music. Maybe there are more people like me in the age of Spotify but US music nerds certainly seem to be collectors.

You don't have to download full albums on bittorrent but SLSK has more obscure music than what you can find on torrent sites.

whispering fairy tales (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

bittorrent vs soulseek is just no competition at all, not even the same ballpark.

piscesx, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

i've been a mediafire junkie for the past two & a half years or so and have been considering going back to soulseek lately as things are increasingly drying up. speeds on soulseek are frustratingly inconsistent but the whole experience of finding stuff through exploring other people's libraries is so much more fun than just google searching, or even going through album upload blogs. i think it's really the only thing online that approximates the random discovery & high incidence of connecting with total nerds of buying used vinyl

flopson, Sunday, 25 March 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

bittorrent vs soulseek is just no competition at all, not even the same ballpark.

what's a lot faster.

I wouldn't have got this pm from a bit torrent site.

[14Mar12 00:29:35][amour&discipline] Hi ! I just browsed you and saw you were sharing music from my friend Dustin Wong. If you have the time, please check http://amour-discipline.org . It is a collective webzine made by bands (dustin posted an article two days ago), labels, activists... A&D also is a donation platform where people can send donations to ANY indie band or indie label in the world. We want to champion culture sharing AND provide an alternative way to support artists. If you have the time, read our full manifesto on our website, and don't hesitate to give me your opinion about it.

Also on Soulseek you find usernames that are characters from Roberto Bolaño novels. But the best username I ever found was Remote user banned.

Regarding the RIAA Armageddon thing. If it's not enforced-legally those ISPS will just provide a huge business opportunity to new ISPS who don't give a fuck about it.

Moka, Sunday, 25 March 2012 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

true in theory, but can be suppressed if the RIAA sues the living shit out of any of them before they get off the ground.

Poliopolice, Sunday, 25 March 2012 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

I am also amazed that people still use soulseek, but then it's probably just a bunch of old dudes who still use brick and mortar banks and sign their posts on message boards.

killa amc (admrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 26 March 2012 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

I still have it, but don't use it much anymore - only to look for weird new wave 7-inches and the entirety of "flexi-pop". Plus it seems a lot slower than it used to be.

i think the main thing you guys are missing re the popularity of soulseek is the community aspect. The chatrooms are busy. As i said various metal communities are there (some from websites with private rooms). There's nowhere better for obscure stuff. Sure megaupload etc was quicker but if you cant find it on a blog soulseek usually had someone with it.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 26 March 2012 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

yeah idk the idea that slsk is some quaint old thing. filestube et al are pretty much useless now.
