Cuz my friends keep telling me it's really good

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 13 February 2003 07:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it is quite good. much better than beck's 70s songwriter rip-off sea change which was in a similar vein. more stripped down. more authentic. more music. less production. you can still stream the entire album at the bbc.

yes james, it is THAT good. alex's descriptions are otm, except it's not quite good, it's THAT good.

willem (willem), Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. best thing he's done since the first bonnie prince billy album (i see a darkness), and may be better than that - too soon to tell.

doug (doug), Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

it's good yes. it's very very low-key, from start to finish, but it's quite lovely when you're in the mood for something WISTFUL. Far better than "sea change", yes.

It's his best since 'days in the wake' (palace brothers). I was quite worried about it cos the last one (ease down the road) was a bit poor. The new one's very understated, very subtle and very very powerful.

the collaboration with one of the wu tang on a mariah carey song never surfaced,i gather...
my dad has the album, but i haven't heard it yet

robin (robin), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It can't be any good - he's got a bushy beard and plaid shirt.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

No way, that beard and shirt make it EVEN BETTAH. (note: it's great, if a bit short)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 13 February 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

In German we say In der Kürze liegt die Würze. Brevity is the soul of wit. Beck's album was definitely too long (>50 minutes). Another short classic album which must have inspired Will Oldham is Nick Drake's Pink Moon. 28 minutes or so.

WIll played a two hour and twenty minute solo acoustic show at Lincoln Center's American Songbook series with Matt Sweeney on a few songs last night. It was really amazing. The best show I've seen him play. Tons of banter, storytelling, lots of covers and rare songs. Setlist is here:

That looks amazing. I wonder if it was recorded.

She Got the Shakes, Saturday, 9 February 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

It was definitely being recorded. Hopefully it will get a proper issue at some point.
