Arcwelder : C/D?

I haven't really been a big fan since "Pull".. but they seem grossly underrated, or even known anymore. Sure, the Husker Du influences are pretty obvious, but they really did make great heavy-n-chunky rock layered with lots of beeyotiful melodies.

I still love that two-fer CD that has "Jacket Made in Canada" and "This" (which was released when they were still called Tiltawhirl)

*expects crickets in this thread*

I like 'em too, darnit. *refers to AMG reviews etc.*

They still play pretty regularly 'round here (Mpls), but they're not really my thing. They came off to me as a popwise Helmet but the material was a little weak.

THEY FREAKING ROCKED when they opened for MISSION OF BURMA in Minneapolis last November.

Just say YES to ARCWELDER

loved the Favor 7" on Duophonic and thought the first album had a couple of really good tracks, lost interest a bit after that though..

The song that they contributed to the All Tomorrow's Parties comp last year (the Shellac one) rocked pretty hard.

They were great

Bring on the Tar C/D

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 14 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I always ment to check out Arcwelder, but never got around to getting it done. I'll have to scope Ned's reviews at AMG.

Tar was a lot of fun live. The all ages show I saw with them and Jawbox was one of my favorites. I saw them again with Shellac and it was pretty good, but kind of weird audience. Tar's records get a bit samey, but their best is pretty good.

I've hardly heard them, but Favor, quite a few years ago, was spectacularly good.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 February 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Theere's some really wounded feeling trapped at the bottom of many of Arcwelder's songs, scratching like hell to get out. The fact that their delivery is so samey and the vocals so nasal never really deterred me from liking them a lot, even when the rest of the world seemed to give up. "Jacket Made in Canada" is a fantastic album as is "Pull" and everythiing else they've done (other than "Entropy" which just seemed incredibly dull) has merit.

And yeah, I *loved* Tar when they were around. I don't go running to put those records on anymore, but they're nice once in a while. There was a band that was striving for perfection, like Raekwon.

Never quite got what people saw in them, but then, it's been a very long time since I've listened to an Arcwelder album.

Saw them play in, uh, late 92 or early 93 with Kepone and the Jesus Lizard in Richmond. Kepone were terrible, but I think it was a very early show. I recall Arcwelder being fine, but almost nobody remembered anything about them when the Jesus Lizard hit the stage.

Picked up Everest or something like that via mail-order. I was hoping for BIG impressive sounds (Big Black, Killdozer, Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers, other offerings from Touch&Go at the time), instead I heard the album as a sort of NakedRaygunLite...the thin production didn't help. Disappointed I sold it lickety-split. Revisiting a couple songs from it now, I have a better appreciation for the vocal harmonies and the band's melodic capabilities. Still (based on the couple of songs I just heard), I'd rather just listen to Quicksand.

six years pass...

I haven't gotten anything after Pull. Which albums are musts? (based on finally ripping the earlier stuff and revisiting it. Much better upon revisiting.)

jacket made in canada is my fave, but mainly because 'favor' is my #1 arcwelder track

i actually have the version of the first Arcwelder album (This) that was briefly released under the bandname "Tilt-a-Whirl" but then they got sued by the company that made the carnival ride and had to change the name to Arcwelder

My alma mater college station had that one too. If you go to Arcwelder's site (arcwelderband.com ?), they talk about that whole thing. Whoever wrote the blurb said at the end "If you have one of those albums, it may even be worth $5 or $6" lol

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

one of their show posters a couple of years ago was a giant blow up photo copy of a ASCAP check for $4 and change.

also, if i may say it w/o it seeming like faint praise....they are SUPER NICE DUDES (and an awesome band)

Have the band ever played Southern California ever? I was almost the lone Arcwelder fan in greater L.A., i think, but while I was a fan, they were one of the few bands that never made it down to L.A. for a show, AFAIK. (which is fine! Just wondering if they ever played out that much, period.)

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

(i mean, having no one in L.A. know who the band is probably played a part in why they never made it down here, duh. Just curious if SoCal was an anomaly, or they rarely played outside the upper midwest.)

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure exactly how much they toured at the peak, but I would say that they were definitely very focused on the Chicago/Milkwaukee/Mpls type circuit.

they played the T&G 20th anniversary party...they also i guess got flown over to play in Spain last year at some festival (!)

this is what happens when I finally open my big mouth

Arcwelder are touring with Shellac on the West Coast plus a show in Minneapolis this June. (they're playing Seattle at least, so I assume they're on for the whole coast -- and Minneapolis for obv reasons.)

Underrated? Rated just right? I just realized that a) they put out a new album and b) play the occasional show.

God damn I love “Pull” so much. Scott’s songs especially kill me even more 30 years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GuJO2PkOBI
