weird Tom Waits lawsuit question

Was told tonight that Tom Waits sued Stone Temple Pilots for intellectual property theft for singing through a megaphone (and lost).

Sounds like bullshit, and googling didn't locate it, but it did locate enough other Tom Waits litigousness (against Frito-Lay, against MP3) that it's not totally out of the question, I suppose.

Anyway, I'm guessing this was a joke that was misinterpreted, but if anyone has knowledge other than that, chime in please.

waits didn't invent singing through a megaphone

(i tried to google a pic of rudy vallee doing it: there's a famous one of him dressed as a cherub)

Rudy Vallee (but no cherub costume, sadly)

Also just last night watched the second season of Mr. Show; one of the standout sketches spoofs this whole tradition of megaphone singing.

Tom Waits' attorney would probably point out that Rudy Vallee's thingamajig has no amplification, and is really something else entirely.
