FAVORITE SONG ABOUT GETTING DUMPED

What are your favorite songs about getting dumped from a relationship? Mine is "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" sung by Kenny Rogers when he was in a band whose name escapes me know. It is about a Viet veteran coming back from the war in a wheelhair whose wife is running around town screwing every guy in sight.

"Mess" Ben Folds Five. I mean, the more I listen to "The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner", the worst it becomes, but that one song just wanders all over the place, and then stars with the puns in case you forget its a BFF track.

Total Eclipse of the Heart/Bonnie Tyler
I'll Survive/Gloria Gaynor (also done by Cake)
Breaking Up is Heart to Do/Can't remember the guy's name

"You Dropped a Bomb on Me," Gap Band. I actually attempted to sing this with intense you-know-what-I-mean eye contact to my ex-girlfriend while we were dancing to it at our first post-breakup dance in h.s. Didn't work: that woman was impervious to irony. Plus, she was already hooked up with Rich Johnson*, who could play Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur" on guitar. Best I could ever do was "Froggy Goes A-Courtin'," which isn't very impressive.

*Heh heh I said "Rich Johnson."

Lyle Lovett, "The Girl in the Corner"

This is why:
1) How many songs are about being dumped by Julia Roberts?!
2) It talks about the meeting for the first time part, not the dumping part, and yet is definitely a dumped song (because you know the backstory, and because of the tone)

"My Favourite Dress", "Gone","Dalliance", "No Christmas" and about nineteen other tracks by The Wedding Present.

"Last to Know" by Buzzcocks

"Can't Stand Losing" by the Police

To a degree, "Stigmata" by Ministry.

"Breaking Up is Hard to Do" eh? Neil Sedaka?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 16 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

How about........ 'absolutely anything that's playing on the radio around the time.' Whenever I have that kind of emotional upheaval I find sympathy in whatever's put in front of me, nothing's too shallow or superfical to carry my feelings.
But I second Alex in NYC's Wedding Present nomination.

With the possible exception of "Head like a Hole," it seems like every song on PRETTY HATE MACHINE by Nine Inch Nails is about how some bitch fucked up poor Trent's life and how bummed out he is about it. Likewise the BROKEN e.p.

...yeah... isn't HEAD LIKE A HOLE about some musician's (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) wife (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) because the band (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted)that this musician (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) is in is so fucking great and powerful? So great and powerful, in fact, that they sold 47 CDs over the internet last yaer.

Gary the Goat, Monday, 17 February 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"Up The Junction" seconded.

And...

"Just Broke Up" by Smoking Popes for its daring simplicity, and Steps' "After The Love Has Gone" for similar reasons.

Daring and simple does it for me, I guess.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tell Lorraine" -- Tom House (a situational favorite, I admit -- I was listening to it a lot at a tumultuous time. "is it something else come over me or only winter's chill / makes it hard to remember here anything I once held near / makes it hard for me to remember what there was to hold")

Jesse Fox, Monday, 17 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Garry -- hadn't heart that particular rumour/legend, but my curiosity is piqued! Do tell!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex,
It's just a rumor... actually there is probably no truth to the tale at all... it's just that the song HEAD LIKE A HOLE is such an accurate description of some musician's (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) wife (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) that it seems like it was tailor-made for her (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted). The musician's (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) band (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) is currently on a comeback tour through a few select cities (whose names can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted). Hint (1)... the band's (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) current label (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) and former label (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) seem to be embroiled in a fight over the band's (whose name can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) back catalog. Hint (2) Mention of the persons (whose names can't be mentioned or this thread will be locked and or deleted) has already been cause for certain threads to be locked and/or deleted.

Gary the Goat, Monday, 17 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Stay With Me" by Lorraine Ellison gets its compulsory mention.

What I listened to obsessively the last time I was actually dumped: the 12" of "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order. Its abstraction was extremely comforting.

"With the possible exception of "Head like a Hole," it seems like every song on PRETTY HATE MACHINE by Nine Inch Nails is about how some bitch fucked up poor Trent's life and how bummed out he is about it. Likewise the BROKEN e.p."

actually broken is supposedly more inspired by his record company troubles at the time.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Modestic" by Heavenly, sung from the point of view of the dumper rather than the dumpee. It still kills me with just how mean-spirited (i.e. great) it is.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh...just finished reading the Eno thread, had the "Tiger Mountain" locked groove & locked grooves in general on my mind, then read Gary's post which reads EXACTLY like a locked groove! (Or at least the verbal equivalent.) Locked and deleted groove locked and deleted groove locked and deleted groove locked and deleted etc. Kinda amusing, I thought.

Ben Folds Five, "Song For The Dumped" is my choice

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 3 June 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I really couldn't give a shit about the Nine Inch Nails, but I would like to know who the band Gary's talking about is.

"You Don't Love Me," Matthew Sweet. It's the very definition of heartbreak:

But you don't love me, you don't love me
You can't see how I matter in this world
Even though I loved you
You can't believe that
You think that leaving
Is what will make you happy
Then I guess it's okay, I think it's okay
If you go away

phil dennison, Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"end of the world" by skeeter davis owns this thread.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and "days" by the kinks deserves an honorable mention for the dumpee responding to the dumping by saying "thank you" to the dumper, whom he still loves.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 3 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

not exactly about getting dumped... but sinatra's "i wish you love" is a great break up song. he wishes her the best and so on... there's this subtle flirty, charm in it that sorta makes you wonder if he really did want it to work out. subtext = "i wish you love, with me!"

i dunno. good tune. suggested tunage if you make the girl you break up with a mix cd or tape cause of the totally classy, mature attitude.

"Your New Friend" by Smog is my personal fave. At least is causes me tremors.

The Cure - "Boys don't cry"

"go cry on somebody else's shoulder" by frank zappa - boo hoo. really though, all of "FREAK OUT" out to cheer you up, in regards to getting dumped - shit all the first four records oughta bring you up regarding relationships, cos the whole world's abuncha retardz.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Monday, 7 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Buzzcocks own this thread!

Start off with No Reply, You Tear Me Up, Ever Fallen In Love, through Operator's Manual, Love Is Lies, Nothing Left, You Say You Don't Love Me, Last To Know, and ending up with a nicely cathartic singalong of "Admit! Admit! You're shit! You're shit! Admit, admit you're shit, you're shit, you're shit, you're shit, you're shit!"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Supremes song ever. The Supremes are the only thing keeping me sane at the moment. "Where Did Our Love Go?" especially hits me right now. "Love Is Here And Now You're Gone" and "You Keep Me Hanging On" for the breakup that just won't end.

Hint (2) Mention of the persons... has already been cause for certain threads to be locked and/or deleted.

How exactly is this possible?

Unknown User, Monday, 7 June 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, best song about getting dumped: "When Did You Stop Loving Me? When Did I Stop Loving You?" by Marvin Gaye.
