irrational hate

you know you should like it, but you don't. what is it?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 February 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spoon. I keep telling myself "it's all because of that line about not liking the White Stripes but liking... urgh... Har Mar Superstar" but I have the suspicion it's more than that and I don't know why (other than perhaps Kill the Moonlight is supposedly a subtle grower and I have no patience for subtle growers at this point in my music-nerd download-everything life).

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 17 February 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate - do you hate the Kinks?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

God no.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Spoon=Wire if Colin Newman was Billy Joel.

They're not bad but the new album petered out at the halfway point imo. It's too tight-assed in some way. His lyrics definitely won't work for everybody either. I dig Girls Can Tell a bit more. It's looser.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 February 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking PAVEMENT. Can't stand'em. Too pretentious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 February 2003 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Shadow! Dull, middlebrow beatz that people I dislike seem to revere as sort of thinking-man's hip-hop. Oh yeah, and somehow legitimizes sampling as if it needed to be legitimized. DIE MONSTER!

original bgm, Monday, 17 February 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

His music is kinda ok in a bland way, I suppose.

original bgm, Monday, 17 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Most (but by no means all) old-fart vocal jazz.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who are you thinking of specifically, Jody?

(I have mobilized my rhetorical troops for the seemingly-imminent FLAME WAR.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

People like Dave Frishberg, and maybe Mose Allison in his cornier moments. The clever-hammy LOOK FUNNY HAHA end of the vocal-jazz spectrum, esp. when interpreted by singers who pour the cleverness on too thick.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I love you people.

Can't stand Spoon. I mean... wait... I can stand them, but I think they're colossally overrated. What's with this rule that every band who has trouble with a record label must forever afterward be venerated? Their earlier stuff is Pixies Pixies Pixies, and nary a whiff of invention. Girls Can Tell has a few songs that are mix tape worthy, but it doesn't hold together too well as an album. And their new record, with the exception of "That's the Way We Get By," is a total snooze. No buildups, no releases. They always seem just about to rock, but they never do. It's frustrating to listen to.

And DJ Shadow, while he's had his moments, is mostly boring. Take that first track on "Entroducing," for example. The sampled talking amounts to, "I'm so cool. Man, am I ever cool. Once I thought I wasn't cool, but I turned out to be wrong." And then the beat comes in, and it's... oh, jeez... it's plodding. It's low-fi, low-tempo, and low-energy. From the fist time I heard it to the last, I was left thinking, "What in the world is so great about this?" And the new album is even less exciting than that one. Blech. Wrote him off my list a long time ago.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've pulled my troops back from the brink. I think this was a diplomatic misunderstanding. I tht you meant by vocal jazz, Boswell Sisters, Billy Eckstine, etc.

However, an important question remains: do you like Blossom Dearie and/or Lambert Hendricks and Ross?

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Bruce Springsteen. Tool. Foo Fighters.

er,.... sorry.

maria b (maria b), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Lambert Hendricks and Ross: The worst shit I've ever heard.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Almost all rap I've ever heard. hate to write off a whole genre, but I've yet to hear any that I could appreciate, let alone enjoy.

also Peter Gabriel. I hate that guy.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a soft spot for Mose Allsion, but I know what Jody Beth means about his "cornier moments." Sometimes it's a bit too cute-cute. But sometimes it's just lovely. "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" breaks me up inside.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No, wait, I take that back, this Bride of No-No track I'm currently listening to on the Troubleman comp is probably the worst shit I've heard.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

hate to write off a whole genre

I hate for you to write off a whole genre, too, especially such a vital and important one. Modern music is leaving you behind, I'm afraid.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Jethro Tull is one of the only bands who will make me switch the channel w/o hesitation. Normally with bands I "hate" there is a morbid curiosity, but not in this case.

The prob. I think with Mose Allison is that he insults his audience by phrasing some of his lyrics (and others' lyrics) in such a way that the wordplay and punchlines CANNOT POSSIBLY BE MISSED. Compares unfavorably in this respect to Jimmy Witherspoon and Sonny Boy Williamson. However there is an element of witty satire in some of Allison's songs that is enhanced by this.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually really do like LHR. There was some real talent there, a great blend of personalities and voices and a true love/respect for/understanding of Basie, Ellington, Horace Silver, etc. Jon Hendricks in his prime was the absolute shining star of this style of lyric writing.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Peter Gabriel. I hate that guy.
Ouch. I like to think of P Gabriel as an alternate Sting who has enough talent to back up his pretences.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this thread was about irrational hate!

Thus, no arguments must be made.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

exactly! irrational hate! I can't sensibly explain why I can't stand rap: it's irrational, but there it is. Kenan; vital, important, modern, whatever - I can't rationally explain why I totally don't get the attraction.

excuse my defensiveness, but everyone, everywhere attacks me for this, and I figured this would be a safe place.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure it's because you hate black people, Derrick. Just ask anyone here.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It is a safe place, relatively speaking. No one's calling you a racist (yet). But you have to expect a little dissent.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Thus, no arguments must be made.

I like arguments. I don't believe in irrational hate. I think it's lazy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome to ILX, Kenan. (In theory, anyway.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I think I'm on the wrong thread.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Although it has subsided a little in recent years, I still really hate the Tragically Hip. I think they're a crap band but there are a lot of crap bands that I don't hate. Does this make me a bad person?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

by safe place, I meant this 'irrational hate' thread, specifically. heh.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 17 February 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Ros. my friends were (technically) correct in thinking that i'd like them and at first i did. but god, this band are shite.

Hot Hot Heat. how could i not like a band with cheesy early-eighties synths and a lead singer that sounds like a cross between Elvis Costello and Robert Smith? very easily in fact -- lemme count the ways.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 17 February 2003 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I've mentioned this before:Mission Of Burma.Total godhead for everyone in indie-land and a total dud for me.I love the Feelies,Wire,Swell Maps, and every other obvious choice for geekster canonization but MOB just make me go BLEH. Even Academy Fight Song! Even You Know What You Can Do With Your Fucking Revolver. Make mine The Clean!
I love Jackie & Roy though! Just love 'em. And Blossom Dearie, but most importantly,I love Keelie Smith!!

Scott Seward, Monday, 17 February 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

without a doubt, the A*Teens.

they make me twitch unreasonably. if i don't switch them off immediately, i feel the closest i ever have been to having a seizure.

no other band does this to me. they, indeed, are Special.

janni (janni), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Any band remotely associated with post rock (incl, Tortoise, GYBE, Mogwai). It's bad because as relatively popular new rock goes, it's one of the few things out there close to being in my realm of interest, but god is it annoying. I don't really understand how people can listen to it for more than 5 minutes.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Tupac. Sorry, but there it is. No hate for chart-rap overall, but something about that dude just fries me. Maybe it's the fact that he's been deified from here to Africa...nah, I hated him and his overrated "sensitive thug" thing when he was alive.

Sparks, as well. Esp the mustache guy. SFA's Fuzzy Logic is ruint for me because they refer to that dude and then show his picture, along with (the also overrated) Bill Hicks.

Frank Zappa. I used to listen to him a lot, but now I just hate him I just do and none of all y'all can do a damn thing about it.

Neudonym, Monday, 17 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Just irrational, right? No explanations. Should be something that has some "quality," that a lot of people like...

Zappa!
Wilco
Cassandra Wilson

Blossom Dearie: what, you don't like her song about "My attorney, Bernie"??!!

Mose Allison vs. Sonny Boy Williamson (I assume you mean Rice Miller). Shit, no comparison, I would rank S.B.W. in my top five all-time performers in any field...I'd like to hear Blossom Dearie or Mose Allison do "The Goat."

frank p. jones (frank p. jones), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Welcome any Googlers looking for "Blossom Dearie or Mose Allison do a goat"!

Neudonym, Monday, 17 February 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Tortoise. I like GY!BE and Mogwai, therefore I have to like these artless wankers? Fuck off. David Pajo can fuck off as well. Just because he was in Slint he thinks he's allowed to join the Smashing Pumpkins as well?! Cunt.

Callum (Callum), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

STOP THE HATE!!!!

Aw, geez...you must be listening to the wrong songs...

What about SECRETS? FUNWORD? CERTAIN FATE? DEAD POOL? MICA? LEARN HOW? PEKING SPRING...fer gawdssake...you mention what may be their two most overrated songs...not that I don't go crazy for those two, but really THOSE ARE NOT THE BEST EXAMPLES FOR THE CLASS.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles. I don't hate them exactly, I just am not at all interested.

AFI. My brother listens to them constantly. Also Jello Biafra's speeches...that man's voice makes me want to claw things apart.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I still really hate the Tragically Hip. Does this make me a bad person?

Sounds like a sign of your noble abilities at reasoning to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles, YES! FUCK THE BEATLES!

Callum (Callum), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards of Canada ... heard it the other day at http://www.mixoftheweek.com and still couldn't get into it.

Jan

Jan Geerinck (jahsonic), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards Of Canada can fuck off, I agree.

Callum (Callum), Monday, 17 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Blur

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

There really isn't any reason why I dislike the Cure quite as much as I do. I like people who like them. I like some of their videos. I even like some of their RECORDS but only only only by pretending it isn't actually them doing the records.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretend it's mice. Then they seem warm and cuddly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

The Cure to me seem like the definition of "Almost, but not quite."

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All BofC except a few tracks off Music Has the Right... can fuck off.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad I'm not alone. The Beatles can fuck right off. Particularly Lennon.

(Although I do like some of their records, I still fucking hate them. You asked for irrational, right?)

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

erase errata. i had to leave the room the last time i saw them play as the urge to storm the stage and garotte them with their stupid outfits was overwhelming.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no irrational hate of any band.

cuz I'm just too fucking cool.

*preens in mirror, shreds a photo of Billy Corgan and imagines it was Billy himself*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Voivod, Kix, Michael Jackson, Corina, Amy Grant, Cypress Hill, Sandee, Noir Desir, and Mariah Carey. In more or less that order. Oh, and Electric Eels too.

Who am I leaving out?
