And The Delgados ain't even in the top 40. Whatthefuckisgoingonexactly?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

who are turin brakes and the music? (and can we eat them?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

You can shove em in an oven if you want. Dunno if that makes them digestible.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

thats absurd - i didnt know The Music had a single out - the Turin Brakes one has been all over the place though...i'm not sure about them, one second i like their voices/harmonies the next i can't stand them, still it might be good to have a song with the line 'my love giving me head...' in the top 5

i'm sure it will end up Turin Brakes at number 10 and The Music at 15 tho

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The public are stupid. Obviously. That's what's going on here exactly.

Callum (Callum), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

like they're not 'stupid' any other week

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Whatthefuckisgoingonexactly?"

More people have bought records by The Music and Turin Brakes than Delgados.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

although i am pleased that i have an excuse to bitch about The Music some more. Their music is as ugly as their ugly lead singer.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, that Turin Breaks single is painfully bad. It's been bought by fuckwit David Gray fans trying to find something "a bit obscure". The cunts. As for The Music, other ILM types are so much better at explaning why they're more rub than a massage, so I'll leave them to it.

The Delgados lack of chart devouringness may have something to do with (my local) HMV (at least) not bothering to file "All You Need Is Hate" under new singles, instead randomly putting it in with the old stuff.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the Turni Brakes song. Its tuneless acoustic-guitar-stop-startiness is done better in the Sinead from Fame Academy song. And that's shit also.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It probably helps that the Turin Brakes single is retailing for 95p in its first week

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

but who buys singles JUST because they're cheap really? i mean they must want it because they like the song really

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Things could be so much better, totally shit top 40 at the moment

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, The Delgados not making it in with such a cracking song is sad, I'm just as disappointed as I am about Sarah Whatmore not making the top 10 last week. (i.e. RAISE YOUR STANDARDS, UK SINGLE BUYERS!)

Seriously. Is UK pop radio even playing "All You Need Is Hate"? If not, not much of a surprise then.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeh,Sarah Whatmore is the only decent track in the 40,should've been Top 5.The new Dannii Minogue is also pretty cool

Paul R (paul R), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I the only one who thinks that the singer of the Music is really Geddy Lee's kid?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

does the singer out of The Music talk like an ordinary guy?

I don't like Turin Brakes. I'm not sure why.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i loathe the idea of the music, the name of the music
(does it remind everyone else of those 'song power' t shirts
that the eagles wore)but above all the music of the music.

i quite liked the turin brakes song tho
and thought '72' was great. just don't see the problem
with that at all.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"all you need is hate" sounded like it could have been a big hit, actuyally. i wrote a review of "hate" for college, and i said "this is the single". shame it hasn't taken off...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

its official - i am the only person on ILX who doesn't hate both The Music or Turin Brakes then

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is, I've liked songs by both of them... but their current singles are shite.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Some persepective: a Turin Brakes single would never even get anywhere near the Top 40 where I live and to mention The Delgados and chart in one sentence would be even more ludicrous.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

nah stevem i have records by both that i quite like

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Turin Brakes kinda suck. If you absolutely must listen to something from Astralwerks' new line of lite rock, Sondre Lerche is the only way to go.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Which Turin Brakes song is this? I downloaded an advance copy of the album they're putting out in March and really enjoyed it. I like the warm production sound; lots of electric piano and tasteful guitar.

note that I'm in Canada, and no *nothing* about the band; never even heard them before, but saw the album on an FTP and was curious. I can't help but be pretty objective.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

It's "Pain Killer". My review for the student paper called them a pre-pubescent Starsailor, and generally implied that the band should consider a drug overdose.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I don't know Starsailor either...

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Count yer blessings.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

All right, then! At least you guys don't have Our Lady Peace. I forgot to mention them in the 'bands that no-one likes' thread.

derrick (derrick), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard The Music on record. Live they were pathetic.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the new liberty x record is infuckingcredibly g00d

schnell schnell, Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i am sadly coming to the conclusiong that stevems taste in music is actually pretty bad;)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

har, posting on IL-fuckin'-M is the first time I came to that conclusion as well gareth :(

but with The Music, Doves, recent Mercury Rev and Flaming Lips, Turin Brakes, even Starsailor, hell even fuckin' Muse - i just don't see/hear/recognise whatever you think it is that makes them so awful, or even if i can appreciate it it doesnt seem to bother me half as much - i never hear enough decent arguments about WHY they're so bad. maybe its just a taste thing but in all those bands i think there is at least some vaguely interesting aspect or at least SOMETHING that doesnt make them anywhere near as bad as a million other guitar bands

i suppose this is like the opposite of many people on ILM who grew up listening to Morrissey, Stephen Merritt, Wire etc. and just say 'oh yeh i like dance music' but dont really distinguish much between something like Cygnus X 'Superstring' (gareth this track is shite!) and 'Vernon's Wonderland' or whatever...thats not a dig at you gareth honest, just using it to make a point

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

and i'd say it doesnt mean i have bad taste in music, i'm just more permissive and tolerant than you lot ;)

you should talk to my gf more for true infuriation - you'll believe someone can love 'Hybrid Theory' and 'Does This Look Infected?' just as much as they love 'Ladies & gentlemen we are floating in space' - bizarre eh?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Cygnus X 'Superstring' (gareth this track is shite!) and 'Vernon's Wonderland' or whatever

haha, but those tracks are similar-ish! it would be more perhaps comparing vernons wonderland with sl2 with audio bullys with josh wink?

Cygnus X 'Superstring' (gareth this track is shite!)

:0

and

:(

and

"you hurt me in my heart"

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

yes they're similarish, thats why i picked them...and Turin Brakes are similar enough to Starsailor and Doves - and if you think they're all equally bad thats totally fair enough, but WHO IS the best band for that kind of music AT THE MOMENT...i know you're probably just totally not interested in that kind of music these days (like a lot of people on ILM who listened to it a lot more growing up) and feel its a bit irrelevant compared to other stuff going down (and yeh i think pop, hip hop and dance are more exciting too) and that seems to be the real reason why they get all the shit rather than criticising them more along the lines of 'they cant sing/play/produce at all!' or 'thats such a rip-off of suchandsuch'...or are those comments in fact relevant here?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

also Tom did you see The Music at Glastonbury last year / is this what you are referring to with the 'live they were awful' comment...just curious as to why you think they were bad (i'm terrible at judging gig performances really so maybe it would help)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

and OK 'SUperstring' isnt that bad at all...but its nothing special to me

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah at Glastonbury.

I think all those bands are bad in different ways! (except the Lips/M Rev) (and any you mentioned who aren't actually bad)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh but whyyyyyyyyyyyyy....i suppose if i have to ask you're not gonna tell me ;)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I don't think my reasons are good ones neccessarily. But it's not a lump-them-all-together thing.

An example reason!

Starsailor are bad because the guy elongates every vowel and sounds like he's constipated.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

fair criticism, i think Turin Brakes do that a lot as well! but they're certainly not the first...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it occasionally sounds quite nice on some people. I blame Jeff Buckley for its shift into a lazy stylistic tic used to suggest high emotion.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I blame Jeff Buckley

He can't be blamed enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Turin Brakes are obviously trying to use the same trick that The Doves used last year with 'There Goes The Fear' - out in the doldrums at the beginning of the year, 99p single, deleted after a week, comeback single from a band who's last single was bought by coffee table wankers, etc.

I'm having fun watching them fail to replicate The Doves' success.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
i'd never heard turin brakes before. i wish i hadn't.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering what the heck this revival addressed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this new album just arrived in the mail. it is painful, but is in the other room at sufficient volume to be heard throughout the apartment. i am too lazy to make the terribleness stop. i preferred revival to a new thread dedicated to their singular lameness.

i just heard a lyric that states "hey joe/i'm tasting all your flavors".

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

have you got up to the line where he sings about his girlfriend giving him head?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No way has either Turin Brakes guy got a girlfriend.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i just heard a lyric that states "hey joe/i'm tasting all your flavors".

have you got up to the line where he sings about his girlfriend giving him head?

This sounds like the worst album ever!!
