For details, see thread title. LP or single, and it must actually exist, and you must have heard it.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Since I've only bought one new album this year, I'll have to go with it: No Neck Blues Band, Ever Borneo (SERES, SER-201) LP +7"

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn! Too many to pick!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

er, the white stripes - elephant, for now

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Mountain Goats - Tallahasse

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't I save my answer until after I've heard the Cat Power and Dirty Three LPs that come out today?

In which case, by default -- Loose Fur.

jaymc, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

So far I'll have to go with Ibrahim Ferrer's Buenos Hermanos.

(Thinks, "Now why did I have to go and make such a big deal about just picking one? Now I can't mention the Francine album or the surprisingly good Hall and Oates!")

Neudonym, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Blood Brothers -- Burn Piano Island, Burn

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I as of yet have no ©2003 albums.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

As of this second, Angels of Light, Everything Is Good Here/Please Come Home. However, there are many things out that I want to hear and haven't.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Tangiers, can't remember the name of the album, comes out in two weeks, it's v. good. Imagine if the Strokes had good songs to back up their excellent style.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It used to be Massive Attack's 100th Window but the Go-Betweens Bright Yellow, Bright Orange is more consistent though less hypnotic.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

It hasn't come out yet, but I've heard bunchs of it: BEFORE THE FALL by Firewater.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Cosmos-Take Me With You

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

haven't heard much, so bonnie prince billy's album.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The Angels of Light record is a close second. Calla's Televise third.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i've heard the Audio Bullys album and its groooood - so i pick that for now

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh shit 2003, eh duuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhh for me.

Agoria-La Onzieme Marche but that MAY be 2002 so in that case Electric 6-Danger! High Voltage! (Jacques Lu Cont Thin White Duke Remix)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

bonnie 'prince' billy - master & everyone (no contest)

willem (willem), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"200km/h In The Wrong Lane" t.a.T.u. (no contest)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Early contests for TATU (who may well make my top ten anyway):

*The Broklyn Beats 7" Series" (Broklyn Beats compilation)
And maybe that Ted Leo album that sounds like Thin Lizzy.
And *Elephant. (And Electric Six too, I bet. Tho I've only heard
six songs from it.)
And since TATU's really an '02 holdover, perhaps Justin Timberlake
and/or Tim McGraw too, for that matter (time will tell.)

chuck, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Ted Leo really sound like Thin Lizzy? Please tell me if this is true.

Oh boy, there goes another $12.99.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll second the White Stripes album for now, but Radiohead's next LP WILL BE the best album released this year. For real.

On the flipside, the new Xiu Xiu record is a little diappointing.

Simon H., Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Tatu gets my vote, though I haven't heard much else.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't heard the remix ronan refers to, but "...high voltage" is the single of the year...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Kinski - _Airs Above Your Station_

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, actually Ted Leo merely sounds like Joe Jackson. But his BAND sounds like Thin Lizzy (on about half the cuts, and on "Timorous Me," from his otherwise completey boring previous album.) (And since the second song on the new, more Lizzy-like album mentions every member of the Specials BY NAME, his Joejacksonness can be forgiven, I guess.)

chuck, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah the original is my non dance favourite single of the year, non dance favourite single in surviving memory.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

For now, Calexico - Feast of Wire

jillian (jillian), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

the only way anybody could get me to be remotely interested in Leo's new one would be to say the last one was completely boring. Good job, Chuck.

I thought you LIKED Joe Jackson! At least Look Sharp! If you're taking that back, than I guess it's official: If you don't stick your dick (or clit) in his ear, command him to do the electric slide, or at least REMIND him of a band that stuck their dick in his ear, Chuck won't like your album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

folks, this is how we kiss the editor's ass.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Chuck, seek out the Chisel records if you haven't heard them already. Good modish pop-rock from Mr. Leo. I had been on the fence about the new Pharmicists record, but your mention of "Timorous Me" pushes me toward getting it (it was the only song I really dug from the last album).

All this White Stripe luv confounds me. The album is so boring! And this comes from someone who adored the last three...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yancey - listen to "Hypnotize" again

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Please tell me the chorus is "Meggie, Meggie, Meggie, can't you see? Sometimes your braids just hypnotize me."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I posit that Joe Jackson and Phil Lynott were not that far apart, ultimately, in terms of vocals and poetic influences. Therefore, the circle has been completed.

Anyone else?

Neudonym, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the closest they've come to the MC5, but those stutters that punctuate each verse are so clumsy!

(Chances are halfway after my review of it is done (I'm a quarter there so far) I'll completely change my mind. It happens all the time.)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

so far -- Supersilent 6

(Ma'Attack's "Window" doesn't come close, no)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

be like the squirrel Yancey, be like the squirrel

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Junior Senior's 'Move Your Feet' is a 2002 hangover as well - but i suppose you could pick it for this year

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

>>>I thought you LIKED Joe Jackson! At least Look Sharp! If you're taking that back, than I guess it's official: If you don't stick your dick (or clit) in his ear, command him to do the electric slide, or at least REMIND him of a band that stuck their dick in his ear, Chuck won't like your album.<<<

um, yeah, I still like Look Sharp, and I'm the Man, too. (Though I'd like them a lot more if Phil Lynott was singing. Though between Phil ripping off Van Morrison and Joe ripping off Graham Parker ripping off Van Morrison, Neudonym is proably right in that they were basically the same person.) And you know I've had it in the ear before anyway, just like Iggy says. (And I forgot all about that Calexico album, which I actually liked a lot when I listened to it, though I have no idea who they are, or whose dick and/or clit they remind me of. Possibly TATU's, though maybe not.)

chuck, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Lightning Bolt, "Wonderful Rainbow"
Haven't heard the LP in its entirety, but I've heard all of the songs live.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lightning Bolt album, which I've been listening to for weeks, and which as such reminds me somewhat of when DNA and Mars used to stick their dicks and clits in my ear, is indeed entertaining, as well.

chuck, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The Thermals' _More Parts Per Million_. "HARDLY ART! HARDLY STARVING! HARDLY ART! HARDLY GARBAGE!" Best album on Sub Pop in a very very very long time, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lightning Bolt album, which I've been listening to for weeks, and which as such reminds me somewhat of when DNA and Mars used to stick their dicks and clits in my ear, is indeed entertaining, as well.

an "edgy" robert hilburn impersonation? i give up...

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainer Maria "long knives drawn"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to hear that Thermals record, Douglas. Ira Robbins has been raving about it for a while.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Justin's 'Cry me a river', tATu's 'All the things she said', Eminem 'Lose yourself'... in fact pretty much anything - apart from Da Snedd - from last week's UK top 10, which is the best I can remember for the last 5 years.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, "Cry Me A River." There's a reason to hate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Until now, Massive Attack's "100th Window", followed close by Zwan's "M.S.o.t.S."

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

So far, Kinski's album is topping my list (sometimes followed by Nick Cave's album -- depending on my mood).

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

rolando, when i heard him a few years ago, was ace btw. quetzal has been played both times i've been out in the last few weeks (tom middleton at bugged out and someone at chibuku the other night). it's something special.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah I've hardly posted much on ILM lately anyway, it's been a bit quiet really. Lu Cont was stunning on Saturday, Cosmos, the LRD remixes, Depeche Mode, DJ Gregory, So Much Love To Give, night was helped by parents being away and bringing my friend who does the support dj gig back to my house afterwards to dj for us all. I may know quetzal but don't know I know it. did you ever hear that jaguar style Tomaz Vs Filterheadz track on Intec? I like it a bit, not as much as some folks I know or enough to justify it getting hammered out everywhere in Dublin but still.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i had a listen to the thomas vs filterheadz on the decks at hmv but was a little underwhelmed. ilm has seemed like a strange country over the past couple of weeks (noticed your controversial thread on ile, haha). i did start a thread abt the richard x v liberty x track but only got 3 replies - 2 of which were from me. ah well, what goes around, eh?

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

soft pink truth, tatu i guess

gah everyone knows timberlake's trying too hard, sounds forced. and? it's all the better in my eyes

"GUH GUH GUH GUH Guh guh gu-"

also it's timbaland not neps but you knew that right?

Is this out yet Honda? Can you say a little bit about it to convince me to pay more than I am usually willing to pay for a CD to get it?

Miranda, Thursday, 20 February 2003 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Miranda it comes out 2/23 i think but it found its way to the net a couple of days ago. It's less "rock" than S. Strip, this time more like a retro-pop/jazz album (often Andy Williamsesque), but still wrapped in flourishes of feedback/noise/sound. Tons of production wizardry going on, chopped up voices and things. A

"Ego War" by the Audio Bullys. For once, believe the hype. Not far behind: "Someone Else's Party" by the Durutti Column - perhaps his best record since "L.C."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Audio Bullys and Freaks and (sic): The Broklyn Beat 7" Series (good call, Chuck) and Ted Leo all a lot, but I'm gonna cheat cheat cheat and pick Rough Trade Shops: Counter Culture [2002], because it's long, strong, and has a lot going on

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought the Audio Bullys EP that came out around the start of last year and it didn't grab me one little bit - have they changed their style (i.e. more MCing?) or were they saving the best stuff for the album or or or what?

I've been enjoying but not adoring everything I've heard so far this year (except TATU really is grebt).

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

tom, check out Snow, thats the best one, but no theres not really anymore MCing, its house, slight Jaxx overtones,

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"real life" is still their best track by miles. haven't listened to the album for a while but last time i did it was disappointing.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

actualy scratch my earlier stock ilm response, the b-side remixes to ttc's 'des pauvres riches' are my fave so far

jan jelinek's is way disappointing on first listens. 'music to interrogate by' sucks in particular

zemko (bob), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, the Audio Bullys album isn't what you might expect. Director's cut of forthcoming lead Uncut review on CoM tomorrow.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

so far, His Name Is Alive's 'last night'. In the future i can hear the new califone being added to that. Also the twinkling followup to Elizabeth's Mitchell 'you are my flower'; 'you are my sunshine'.

'What ? My mother was a saint' ( Dr. Z )

Ol' db, Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

marcello is also right in that the lp is a bit different, (snow isnt that representative at all really), its murky. when i am in the mood it reminds me of haunted dancehall, when i am not, it reminds me of ian brown

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

so many good tracks on the Bullys album

'I Go To Your House' is great - love the line "will you leave with me...or will you leave with Steve!"

"100 Million" has some funny Streets-esque lyrics too but the singing is pretty dud

"Ego War" rules, but yeh "Snow" is still probably the best track

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

this is Junior Senior btw

http://www.shynola.com/j_s/j_s_download.htm

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a great junior senior track, but ive forgotten it (am at work) and cant play. will you describe it steve?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

it goes

"everybody, move your feet and something something, ooooh oooh oooooooh!"

and it has really tinny brass and jangly funk guitar throughout, and the stuttery bit is class!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

the video is of course ten times greater than the song itself

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Audio Bullys fans, there is a new edition of Jockey Slut [on sale today] that includes a Audio Bullys track, the snow [dub]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Those Jockey Slut hoodlums haven't sent me my copy yet, I got a sub for Christmas, I've been mailing them ad infinitum. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

steve, does the vocal sound like a hyped david byrne circa 1980?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

also, my answer has now changed and it is LIGHTNING BOLT

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Someone Else's Party" by the Durutti Column - perhaps his best record since "L.C."

MUST HAVE. What's the release date on this?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

24 March. Review up on CoM today.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I thank you, good sir. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

According to:
The Durutti Column
http://www.column.freeuk.com/
it's March 3rd.

the track Spanish Lament is a f-ing gem ! I thought the female vocalist may have been Liz Fraser, but it's not.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So far. Erlend Øye's "Unrest" album. I like the entire Electroclash thing, because it has brought back the best of the early 80s again.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow this new Aereogramme is really different from their first one, I mean it's the same really, but better deeper more beautiful and kind of more ugly, not as much deathmetally but also less fragile. And lots of strings backing their shit up.

Maybe it's also a concept album about God like their first one. That would suck. More listens are indicated.

Neudonym, Monday, 3 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)
