it's good

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it is!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

a little more consistent than previous efforts

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem hem

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

more "metal" too, although i'm not terribly familiar with their output

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

it's boring.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(but it's growing on me, i must admit)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

there's nothing better than something both familiar and boring, it's why we marry, no?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, they have their blues-snooze moments of dullness no doubts

i like the dusty springfield cover

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to download this. Maybe later today.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm with Yancey.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem you mean the dionne warwick cover

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

ahem hem the bacharach composition then

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like the middle as much

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(and his plant imitation on one song is truly frightening)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

urk
i got sick of it and turned it off, just skipped around a few songs

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all a plant imitation!

(this isn't a bad thing)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like what I've heard. Still got that nastiness which is what got me into them to begin with (although it was the sweetness of stuff like "We Are Gonna Be Friends" that sold me on it).

Do my ears deceive me, or is there bass?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

How come everyone has this but me? It's really frustrating.

So does he really use a vocoder on the first couple of songs? Or is it a Frampton style talking guitar thing? Or just a weird microphone?

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Meg singing makes the album for me. She's lovely.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

it sounds like a megaphone to me...

Tom Waits to thread.

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

urk
i got sick of it and turned it off, just skipped around a few songs

that's my reaction to all WS. sounds really great at first then gets old FAST. I haven't really thought about why this is.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Do my ears deceive me, or is there bass?

It's Steve McDonald, of course.

Or Bob Dylan. Or Bob Christgau. Or.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

snooze

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I downloaded some tracks from Limewire, but apparently they're for preview only. After about 30 seconds the track starts repeating itself. What gives? Can't a man download music illegally without someone trying to screw him?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

have they changed their regulation uniforms fritz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

not so far as i can hear

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

is there any disco squealing?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly not.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Then it is deficient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

it's pretty good, all in all. unfortunately it's also feb., which means that "pretty good" will probably make it strictly b-list by the end of the year.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

The lack of disco squealing is almost made up for by the presence of disco thumpthumpthump. And the CD "proper" won't be released until Aprilish, so it has a chance.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 20 February 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it just me or does "There's No Room For You Here" sound exactly like "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"?

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, I didn't check that other White Stripes thread before posting that. Apparently many people agree with me, then.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Ball and biscuit" and not much else

Michael B, Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, anything sounds good in February.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

not my mother calling me at 8am to yell at me. and somehow even THAT sounds better then the new WS.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I started to like Elephant once I got over my disappointment with how same-y it sounded.

The White Stripes are the only of the 'The' bands I can actually imagine a constructive trajectory for; occasionally I wish they'd ditch the lo-fi, four-track thing in favour of something more ambitious.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

neptunes remixes?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

am i the only full-on pro-strokes/hives/stripes ilxor? not that I think they're ALL THAT but I do recognize their right to exist and I think they are better and more interesting than about 75% of guitar bands.

the next strokes record will be FANTASTIC

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree!

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz, I like all three of those bands. My point was more that I couldn't see The Strokes or The Hives really doing anything different creatively, whereas the Stripes seem to have potentially fruitful leads in all sorts of directions that they're stubbornly ignoring.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not really interested in the Strokes, I *am* interested in the Hives (even if I haven't bought anything yet), and the Stripes are fucking great, I'm so glad they are where they are, doing what they do.

So you are not alone.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(The key, I think, has to do less with issues of quality and more to do with what kinds of songs these bands are writing...)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The next Strokes record will be passable. At best.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i think if the strokes go more disco/new wave they will be even better than their innate potential suggests

(i know this is not a new idea, per se)

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

that's the "stubbornly ignoring..." thing is the stripes' whole point, p. - 2 ppl, 2 colours, the "little room" etc - & it's pretty much all a stratagem to ensure full explosive power when jack pulls a dylan and goes technicolour post-stripes

ned, didn't you HATE the first strokes record? so passable will be an improvement?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ned, didn't you HATE the first strokes record? so passable will be an improvement?

No, I never hated them, I just found them utterly unremarkable and in the end just plain boring. Hate I reserve for those bands that make me gnash my teeth in anger.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I think The Strokes' innate potential suggests an ability to make more records just like Is This It?, at best. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I am really looking forward to the next Strokes album!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

when jack pulls a dylan and goes technicolour post-stripes

Fritz how soon is when? I'm ready now!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

don't care much for the Strokes, don't hate 'em, but THEY seem bored (I know, that's half the point). Hives are about as good as any number of In The Red/Crypt/Sympathy/Estrus bands, but with nicer clothes. White Stripes, I like at first, but sometimes I worry about Jack turning into Ryam Adans. Sometimes he seems to buy into the whole auteur bidness, and that runs counter with what makes them as good as they are.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Somebody explain the white stripes to me. please. I'm listening to the album right now. I mean they seem excited, and sort of fast, and they use lots of rock chords. And sometimes they thump along and then BURST which I guess hasn't really happened since jon spencer, but..

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

(NB: I'd love it if the Strokes did a Blondie; I just don't think it's likely.)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's a virtual certainty that the next jack white project will be an acoustic country-blues record.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i actually hope that they end up making 3 more 'is this its' and defining their strokesness like all the great bands did - like chuck berry or ac/dc or johnny cash or minor threat - they should take the long walk down the dead end. just like you say - they don't seem particularly malleable or adaptable they just kind of are this one thing and that's why people like them

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

If they like them. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually the only thing I imagine might prompt a significant change in the Strokes is diminishing returns for the next 2-3 Is This Its, so maybe we can have our cake and eat it too...

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

see doing 2-3 versions of the same record with certain aspects pumped up on each is exactly what i'd consider "doing a blondie" so maybe we are talking along um, parallel lines

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

'Doing a Blondie' = 'if the strokes go more disco/new wave'

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually having something to dance to would be good. I seriously think they should fuck off with the guitars and just go all electronic, then maybe something might happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned just because you weren't there for it doesn't mean something didn't already happen.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was there for it and I had nothing to say beyond noting that "Last Nite" was chirpy and reminded me of the Smiths. But I could say that about a lot of bands. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Strokes should have a TV show like the Monkees or the Archies. They need to develop their individual personalities in a bit more structured way to be at all interesting to me from here on out. They should think about replacing one of the members with a girl, or else have some kind of ubiquitous female manager type to speak for them. There should be Strokes comic books sold in grocery stores. Their good songs are already plenty danceable.

re Strokes Stripes Hives -- I even like the Vines! (well, "Get Free" anyway)

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, the Vines song they have a video for is pretty good!

Kris is ridiculously On the Money re: Strokes merch

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

and danceability!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i think we can all just agree about how wrong ned is on this thread

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah. I shall stick to my guns.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

heh heh ;)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

And harmony is achieved. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

im with ned.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Vindication!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

''am i the only full-on pro-strokes/hives/stripes ilxor? not that I think they're ALL THAT but I do recognize their right to exist and I think they are better and more interesting than about 75% of guitar bands.''

that leaves 25% of guitar bands fritz.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

right!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

go to that 25% then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally agree with Kris on the Strokes merch/personality thing and mark p on the disco thing.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I really can't wait for the new Strokes record aswell, Is This It is just a ray of light as far as me and rock music are concerned, it's just the least attention demanding rock record I've bought ever which is ironic given all the hype, from the second I stuck it in the player it was just a summer fun drinking with your friends sort of album, and it really was instantly loveable without a bad song on it. That is a rare experience with any album.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

the new Strokes tracks i've heard from live recordings have all been fantastic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

the least attention demanding rock record I've bought ever

I admit, the argument that in fact the Strokes should be treated as ambient background sound in an Eno sense works far better than any other claims made for the band. Then imagine turning the volume down even more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I meant it as a compliment

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh trust me, so am I. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)
