Well? I'm torn between Tricky and The Verve.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxinquaye, easy

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, that's quite a good year. But a quick glance at the end of year lists leads me to a choice between Bjork's 'Post' and Pulp's 'A Different Class'.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Crash Vegas, 'Aurora'

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxinquaye - Tricky
Grand Prix - Teenage Fanclub
Different Class - Pulp
The Great Escape - Blur
Washing Machine - Sonic Youth
I care because you do - aphex twin

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

ONE, Kilian

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, but it's so difficult to choose...i'll go with "the great escape". if anyone thinks that I'm embarrassed about that "great escape is the best album ever" thread i set up when i first discovered ILM, they are sorely mistaken.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to that about a week ago; I could only stomach about 5 songs. A pale shadow of Parklife.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Electr-o-Pura.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

low's long division not far behind...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Looking now at Great Escape, I'd only name He Thought Of Cars and The Universal as songs I'd like to hear.

He Thought Of Cars is a damn good song, though.

nod to Electr-o-pura

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

The squinty flog of Yuko & Hiro is the finest Blur evereverever.

Different Class wins this thread by default due to it being Best Album Of All Time, Elastica runs it a close second.

alexfack (alexfack), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i care because you do

robin (robin), Thursday, 20 February 2003 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Goldie's 'Timeless' double-album version...although perhaps it has dated a lot more than the likes of the superb 'Maxinquaye'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tilt should have been a lot higher; obv the Wu-Tang vote was evenly split; and I Care Because You Do, Radar by Earthling, Criminal Justice by D-Note and The Deepest Cut Vol 1 by Omni Trio should all have been in there somewhere, but otherwise not a bad list. Wow, Wagon Christ and Whale! I'd forgotten how great these two albums were...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

seems like this was the total indie year. how about these...

tortoise - gamera/cliff dweller society (alright, not an album, but still a classic)
the bats - couchmaster
crescent - now
fugazi - red medicine
pastels - mobile safari
three mile pilot - the chief assassin to the sinister 2lp
seefeel - succour
magnetic fields - the charm of the highway strip

point_misser (point_misser), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that the last ever good NME top 50 then?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Three-way tie between Carl Craig's Landcruising, GZA's Liquid Swords and Throwing Muses' University.

Indeed -- Tilt should've been much higher.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Roy Montgomery - _Scenes from the South Island_.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

One Track Mind - Railroad Jerk

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxinquaye, is probably my favorite album of all time, but since To Bring you My Love,. is probably my second favorite album of all time (as I've lost my copy of Rid of Me), even though I was too clueless to fully experience it, 1995 "was" the best year ever for me, musically.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The Young Gods -- Only Heaven

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Toss-up:
D'Angelo, Brown Sugar
The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?

Both were great, overlooked, and too weird to sound dated now.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Easy: I am with Jody Beth. Yo La Tengo's Electropura. The NME missed it completely. What a crap music mag. Electropura used to be my favourite of theirs. And then Nothing is a very strong competitor though. And all the others are great too.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Dead C - Operation of the Sonne. They haven't touched it since, sadly (though I haven't heard New Electric Music).

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

GZA or Bjork

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Little plug here for Whale's We Care as the best and most fucked-up album from that year. "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe," and that song at the end where she's dying in a car crash for eight minutes, and that other song where she kind of says that she wants to fist Sarah Cracknell? Lovely stuff.

'But I thought Wake Up! was your favorite from that year?'
'Shut yer haggis-hole.'
'All right then.'

Neudonym, Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

`95 seems like a lifetime ago. MAXINQUAYE is pretty dang hard to argue with in this capacity. WE CARE by Whale seemed pretty promising at the time as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Whale. One of those few times Beavis and Butthead's tastes overlapped with mine.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm having problems deciding between _Maxinquaye_, _Post_ and _To Bring You My Love_. Did _Snivilization_ come out in '94?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I second a Bjork and GZA tie.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 20 February 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxinquaye

1995 was a big year for me. I quit my job and emigrated. Playing 'Ponderosa' instantly transports me back to world I left behind like no other :- drab, concrete, poverty stricken council estates in north Glasgow full of 'weeping winos'.

stevo (stevo), Thursday, 20 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Maxinquaye easy, although there are at least six other albums from this year that are all-time faves

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I hereby proclaim Maxinquaye to be overrated and overvalued compared to Pre Millennium Tension. Thank you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Nedrick, you can proclaim all ya want,.......but you're wrong.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonatha Brooke and the Story - Plumb

bahtology, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Not Mellon Collie, Ned?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I lurv Mellon Collie with a passion brighter than a thousand suns. But Only Heaven is all the more precious because it's mine to love when nobody else wants to. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Long Fin Killie - Houdini

omally, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"I lurv Mellon Collie with a passion brighter than a thousand suns."

:::grumble::grumble::::woefully dishonoring the fire yet again:::grumble::grumble

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ruby - Salt Peter.

chris j (chris j), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

:::grumble::grumble::::woefully dishonoring the fire yet again:::grumble::grumble

I only said that because I love you, Alex. :-) Besides, you'll get no argument from me about how the first two albums in particular are godlike.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers, Ned!

alastair galbraith 'talisman'

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 21 February 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

maxinquaye

runners up:
different class
red medecine

was black secret technology 95?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Geez, is _Talisman_ that old? I must admit, i never came across Mr. Galbraith before his performance at Terrastock II, which just floored me. Gimme him over Rob Pollard any day.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Pavement - Wowee Zowee

willem (willem), Friday, 21 February 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I hereby proclaim Maxinquaye to be overrated and overvalued compared to Pre Millennium Tension. Thank you.

I almost, kind-of, in-a-way agree with you. I think Maxinquaye is a great album, and the better of the two. But I also think Pre-Millenium Tension is crazy good, and not to be ignored. It's definitley definitely undervalued.

But for me, Maxinquaye is in a tie with Different Class. If you think about it, the two albums cover similar thematic ground. Both are about class and poverty, while simultaneously and amazingly also being about sex.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 February 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Mobb Deep - The Infamous

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I still listen to these:
The Verve -- A Northern Soul
Money Mark -- Mark's Keyboard Repair

christoff (christoff), Friday, 21 February 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I completely forgot about that Ruby album! It's frickin' BRILLIANT!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Black Secret Technology - the original version - was March 95 or thereabouts and yes, it gets my pick.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

For comparison, here's Melody Maker's top 50 for the year in which Mr Hebert's choices do indeed tie for top position. There are a few here you may have forgotten:

The Dirty Three - 1st Album

Post - Bjork
Nuisance - Menswear
Makesaracket - Jake Slazenger

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 21 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

surprised Bjork's 'Post' was so low in both MM and NME lists

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I have only just got (8 years late) the terrible pun in Jake Slazenger Makesaracket. Gawdelpme.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

that was a really good year for music. i'm gonna go with pavement's "wowee zowee" but the pumpkins, throwing muses, the amps, and many others were in top form.

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 21 February 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

And yes, that Ruby album = mighty fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

GRAND PRIX for sure, I just played it this morning before I even read this thread. What a keeper!

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

At the time my joint album of the year was "Only heaven" by Young Gods and "Further" by Flying Saucer Attack. With retrospect I'd probably place "Grand Prix" (which I didn't hear at the time) and "Heartworm" up there too, FSA hasn't worn too well but "Only heaven" got a recent spin and sounded as good and forward looking now as then.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

arrrgh. I was wrong. my pick is Luna's Penthouse. whoops

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Monster Magnet: Dopes To Infinity

Infinite Loop Of H8, Sunday, 23 February 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha this is a surprisingly consensus-ish year!

My picks:

1. Grooverider's "Hardstep Selection Volume II" mix
2. Bjork - Post
3. Tricky - Maxinquaye
4. A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology
5. Ani DiFranco - Not A Pretty Girl
6. Ruby - Salt Peter
7. PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
8. The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust
9. Mobb Deep - The Infamous
10. Pulp - Different Class

My OPO choice would be Bjork's album though - very much sums up the mid-nineties for me.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

damn if I can remember very well. 1995 was definitely the year of Electr-O-Pura at the time for ages. But I'll admit I probably listen to Wowee Zowee a lot more often.

Also "Southpaw Grammar," if it came out this year, deserves a special mention.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

That it did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Either Autechre "Tri Repetae" or Summoning "Minas Morgul".

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Björk, Tricky, Peej, Ruby, Whale, Dubstar, Leftfield - 1995 was fucking ace, wasn't it?

But surely - bar two tracks - "Different Class" is the worst Pulp album of the last decade

And what a shame Ruby's second album was mince

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit I'm really embarrassed. How o how could I have forgotten you, Clouds Taste Metallic? Not only the Lips' best record, but the finest intertwinement of Big Fat Metal Guitar Hooks with 90s Indie Pop Sentiments to ever hijack my Discman. I've even included you on lists of my fave records ever, and yet when the chips were down I mentioned Whale (gre!t) and Boo Radleys (!lso gre!t) over thee, little orange and green CD. Some day, perhaps, you'll forgive me.

Or maybe you're just not as good as the others. I'll have a listen now.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel I should shout up for Introducing Happiness or Forever Again but I'll wimp out on Rheostatics and Eric's Trip since I don't think those are their best. Trickey's Maxinquaye.
