"Common People": Can this be done?

Forgive me for I am a naive high school student living in Canada, and I may be plotting some great blasphemy in the circles of Britpop. However...

Do you think it would be possible to play "Common People" w/ only drums, bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboard and vox. and make it actually sound GOOD (this being the operative word, as opposed to 'faithful to the original recording')? Is the synthesizer ABSOLUTELY essential to the song being any good at all, even if the keyboard has several 'synth' options (it's a Yamaha PSR-150)?

And just so you know, NO ONE who this would be performed for would have heard it beforehand. I mean it.

Thanks in advance...and please don't yell at me.

Get yerself an electric violin and you'll be in business.

"plotting some great blasphemy in the circles of Britpop" = the only way britpop should ever be approached (and if you must at that) (pulp is great tho)

just have fun with it. break the rules as often as possible, especially with crappy english music like Pulp. (JOKE!)

If you want to do a cover and think that it has to be exactly like the original, even down to which instruments you use then I guess you really are naive.

Chris Davis (Chris Davis), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should play it with JUST gtr/bass/drums and a coupla effects. add a fourth instrument if you must.

why has NO ONE passed on my "andrew wk covers 'common people'" idea to his cage handlers yet?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Because of the Ritual of Desecration I will utter should such an abomination come to pass.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

ned it is one of the finest, sanest ideas i've ever had

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Whether it can or cannot be done isn't really the issue -- the issue is *WHY* do you want to do it? Why not cover something else?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

*weeps*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

we should have more questions like this on ILM! though i admit i don't know the answer other than "yes"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

well, I like Jess's idea. i like it so much that i plan to e-mail Andrew WK meself to propose it!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, you don't need an acoustic guitar though. Make whoever plays that learn the violin.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 21 February 2003 05:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Now THAT'S the jingle WK should've submitted to Target. Or Coors. Or Snickers.

well, I like Jess's idea. i like it so much that i plan to e-mail Andrew WK meself to propose it!

This is your attempt at revenge because I voted Nader, isn't it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to hear 'Common People' accompanied by just a banjo.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The Gourds would be perfect. Didja ever hear their cover of "Gin and Juice?"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like that but haven't heard the original. Didn't even realise until recently that it was a Snoop Doggy Dog track.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess is right. Where's petitiononline when you need it?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It has great lyrics and a great tune and it has drive, so I can't see at all why you couldn't do it well with a basic rock lineup.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess is right, if only because the arrangements of "CP" as on record and any given AWK song aren't that different

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Then why does one fill me with surging triumphant happiness and the other with SCREAMING HATRED AND A DESIRE TO KILL?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Because you hate fun.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 February 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

This is your attempt at revenge because I voted Nader, isn't it?

naw, that would be if i were to persuade Andrew WK were to cover "enjoy the silence," "sugar hiccup," or "soon"! ;-p

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 22 February 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Because you hate fun.

No, I just hate you. *beats David R. randomly about the head for no reason*

"enjoy the silence," "sugar hiccup," or "soon"

But that's just silly, see. ;-)
