um, their early singles are worth lots of money? their singers are experiencing male pattern baldness? christianity?

generally lame uk band whose sense of self-importance will increase in direct ratio to their increasing banality?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 21 February 2003 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

If Coldplay last even 1/3 as long as U2 have, I pledge to vomit out all my vital organs.

'generally lame uk band whose sense of self-importance will increase in direct ratio to their increasing banality? '

u onto something there with lame, but i think wrong about the sense of self importance. chris martin is ultra humble, feet on the ground, trying to have a good time. he knows they're not regarded as cool or worth listening to by serious listeners. he makes no pretences. that's quite rare. the current work is pretty worthless but i'm not certain they might not make something better. they got something.

"If Coldplay last even 1/3 as long as U2 have, I pledge to vomit out all my vital organs."

Outstanding.

At least U2 didn't take themselves quite that seriously very early on (although that changed swiftly). Coldplay seem to already be at the mercy of elephantine egos of the same variety that currently reign over U2. Also, their second album didn't seem like too much of a progression from their first. I doubt they'll be around too much longer.

The new coldplay album is more stadium and epic than the first, although I dunno if that constitutes a 'progression'. I think Coldplay WILL be around a while longer, although I'm not sure if that's a mark of quality either. Chris Martin is less twattish and egotistical than bono, although he may be heading that way. The other members seem like thoroughly likeable, quiet, modest lads.

Also, Clocks sounds like U2. As do a couple of tracks on Coldplay's new album. So let's just say there are similarities, but differences also.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Coldplay seem quite self-effacing to me and not really pompous in the slightest. Rubbish music, mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

the best bit in 'Clocks' is actually the most U2-esque bit towards the end where it all kinda goes off, you should know which bit i mean....i'm starting to bloody like them now

(is overwhelmed by srunched up paper balls thrown in my direction by ILM collective)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this just too obvious or does no one else think that at least U2 have/had a million times more versatility and creativity than Coldplay, musically and otherwise? Call me when Coldplay does a "New Year's Day".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh they do but the point is 'Coldplay sound a bit like Joshua Tree era U2' sometimes, which is hardly that extraordinary of course but apparently worth mentioning

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

*yawn*

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

generally lame uk band

I know The Edge is Welsh and Adam Clayton is English, but I reckon U2 would be insulted at being called a UK band. Most Dubliners I know use 'Brit' as an insult. Something to do with 900 years of oppression.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, stevem, I got that obvious point but that still doesn't seem to make this statement more meaningful than "Lenny Kravitz is the new Jimi Hendrix" or "The Tea Party are the new Doors/Zeppelin". "In My Place" has started to reach a wraparound point for me though where I hated it so much that I want to like it now.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 22 February 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel genuinely guilty for not actually hating either of these bands. I know I probably SHOULD, there's just nothing there.

Ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 22 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

coldplay are ten times the band u2 is. how anybody can like u2 after all that 90s rock-as-irony Zoo shit is beyond me. Fucking lemons.

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 22 February 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, while Coldplay are definitely the most Bono-like elements of Thom Yorke amplified, and total pricks, have they done anything like U2's "World Be As One" kinda bullshit? Or are they still trying to get in your pants?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 February 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont understand the hate for the Zoo TV/Popmart era U2, i enjoyed it as the ridiculously pompous hi-concept rock spectacle it all was
