Classic or Dud: Mecano

I just realized I'm the only person to bring up Mecano (the Spanish synth pop band, not the dutch band) in any thread here on ILM, and they are one of my favorite bands. Does anyone else like them, or have heard much of them?

(also can anyone who knows Spanish tell me if "20 Grande Canciones" or "Lo Ăšltimo De Mecano" are greatest hits compilation?)

Noone else likes/knows about Mecano? You people are missing out. They are one of the best synth pop bands I've heard.

I only know the Dutch band; it's at the back of my mind that I'd like to hear the Spanish one when I can.

i know and like mecano, but then again, i'm spanish and they were HUGE around here. i don't use to start threads about spanish bands, although i did with le mans.
i liked them as a synth pop band, at their beginnings. once jose took over his brother nacho on songwriting duties i liked them a bit less (especially the lyrics, their weakest point, though some people love them).
ana torroja just released a new album these days. the three of them are massive pop stars in spain.

"especially the lyrics, their weakest point,"

I can't understand any of the lyrics. I agree with you that their earlier albums are better. I'm still working on getting them all. what I really like about them is the arrangements and Ana's voice.

nine years pass...

my Mexican father-in-law introduced me to these guys (and girl), they're pretty great, does ILM really know nothing of them? (as they are massively popular in Europe) I only have the first two but Ana's voice is really a thing of beauty, it kind of negates the dated production. Also the lyrics don't seem so bad? (by my very limited understanding)

They crop up on a couple of other threads here (I think I maybe first read about them on a Les Rita Mitsouko thread?). Anyway yeah they're great. The s/t album and "Ya Viene El Sol" are two of my favourite 80s synthpop albums.

Huh...those other threads I remember seem not to exist. I guess I first saw them mentioned here: foreign synth pop - not much discussion though

Wow, a Jacno reference!! Anyway, are the later albums any good?? I'm looking for more stuff along the lines of "No me ensenien la laccion" or "Me cole en una fiesta"
