Who invented the FADE-OUT-then-FADE-BACK-IN thing?

I'm trying to think of examples that may have occurred before "Helter Skelter" but none come to my head right away. Maybe something by the Velvet Underground, or the Incredible String Band?

Don't remember Blue Cheer doing it... My only guesses would be Floyd, The Who, or Bob Dylan. And while I own a little Floyd, my knowledge of the rest lacks... so, anything there?

this *could* be one of those things Chuck E's "The Accidental Evolution of Rock'N'Roll" may have an answer for
(i'm not too sure 'bout this, tho)

I've skimmed through my Amon Duul "Psychedelic Underground" disc (from 1967) to see if maybe McCartney was trumped by German dirthippies after all, but no evidence yet.

I've heard way too many classical recordings where it SOUNDS like this happens, except it's only that the orchestra plays so softly during certain stretches that their return to a louder volume makes it seem like some trick. I just have to break off the volume knob so SIBELIUS AND SMETANA ROXOR!

Maybe Macca played Ravel's "Bolero" forward & back one day?

I think john beat paul to it...the end of strawberry fields (written before helter skelter)definately fits the fade out/in category...that said I still like paul better

The first example I can think of would be the original Help Me Rhoda by the Beach Boys (not the single version) From the Today album, 1965 I believe.
