Someone on soulseek has all 100 singles but aside from Belle and Sebastian I have no idea what good twee pop sounds like. So..what to avoid and what to snag?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, did anyone else read the latter half of that sentence and get a "does not compute"?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed. Sack it all off and go and listen to Frente.

Download Another Sunny Day's "You Should All Be Murdered" three or four times, just because it's so good it deserves the extra room on your hard drive.

Also, the Golden Dawn's "Let's Build a Dyson Sphere"!!

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 23 February 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to have a soft spot for The Lilac Time but I don't know if they count? Would be the closest I've gotten, anyway.

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 23 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i would stay away from 'if it kills me and it will' and search the earlier harvest ministers single instead 'you do my world a world of good'. and thaumaturgy the weakest orchids single really, but everything else is great except maybe i'd say 'seventeen' is the only vital sugargliders single.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 23 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd say that none of the Sugargliders Sarah singles are their vital ones, except maybe "Top 40 Sculpture" at a pinch.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 23 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

On Sarah, go for:
Springfileds - "Sunflower"
Sea Urchins - "Pristine Christine"

Other stuff:
Razorcuts - "Sorry to embarrass you" (Pink)
Talulah Gosh - "Bringing up baby" (53rd & 3rd)
Boy Hairdressers - "Golden showers" (53rd & 3rd)

come on Ned...we both know that tigermilk was the shit

toll free, Monday, 24 February 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Using the royal 'we' here, I note.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds like ned is more of a sinister guy then.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

*rolls eyes* Ahem. I HATE BELLE AND FUCKING SEBASTIAN. There.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yay

they were always just the poor man's Postcard band anyway

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

but belle and sebastian love ned.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

If they love me, they have done little to show it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"You know my bip-bopping days are over
I hung my boots up and then retired from the disco floor
Now the centre of my so called being is
The space between your bed and wardrobe with the louvre doors "

If you must avoid any Sarah 45, I'd pick only a few ... "If it kills me" is by far the worst Sarah single and "Leaving" by the Rosaries is the second, and maybe "Major John" by The Wake. All the rest are worth hearing, if you've got the time.

Personal soft spots for:

"A morning odyssey" - Sea Urchins (greatest single ever in my world)
"Popkiss" - Blueboy (makes me dance like an imbecile)
"Paris" - Northern Picture Library (for rocking out)
"Dirty mags" - Blueboy (ditto)
"Rio" - Another Sunny Day (for being my life at various points)
"Six o clock is rosary" - Harvest Ministers (though the b-side - "The first star" - is FAR better, if you can find it)
Oh, they're all pretty darned good really. Every Field Mice and Orchids single is of course essential.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 24 February 2003 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

did a c90 once of sarah things, one track per band avoiding the more obvious stuff and stuff on the official compilations. turned out quite well (and the second side ends dead on the end of the tape - always great):

http://home.clara.net/koogy/sarah/disco/plainandtall.htm

Side 1
01: Brighter - Christmas
02: The Orchids - I've Got A Habit
03: The Field Mice - Clearer
04: Heavenly - Shallow
05: Even As We Speak - Swimming Song
06: The Sweetest Ache - Bitterness
07: Sugargliders - For What We Had Hoped
08: The Harvest Ministers - Petticoats
09: The Poppyheads - Pictures You Weave
10: The Golden Dawn - Let's Build A Dyson Sphere
11: Ivy - Nowhere To Mourn
12: East River Pipe - Million Trillion
13: Boyracer - Black Fantastic Splitting
14: Shelley - Prejudice
15: Northern Picture Library - Signs
16: Talulah Gosh! - Spearmint Head
17: The Springfields - Are We Gonna Be Alright?

Side 2
01: Aberdeen - Toy Tambourine
02: Another Sunny Day - The Centre Of My Little World
03: Action Painting! - Boy Meets World
04: 14 Iced Bears - Sure To See
05: Tramway - Star Song
06: The Sea Urchins - A Morning Odyssey
07: Gentle Despite - Torment To Me
08: Blueboy - Clear Skies
09: The Forever People - Sometimes
10: Secret Shine - Elizabeth's April
11: The Wake - Crush The Flowers
12: The Rosaries - Leaving
13: Christine's Cat - Your Love Is...
14: Eternal - Breathe
15: St Christopher - A Prayer For The Sea
16: The Hit Parade - The House Of Sarah

the 501 (glass arcade) and 628 (engine common) compilations also great.
http://home.clara.net/koogy/sarah/disco/501.htm
http://home.clara.net/koogy/sarah/disco/628.htm

and if this was a OPO it'd be, probably, Tramway - Star from sarah 43

What do you all think of the Sarah sleeve-art?

I can't decide if they were going for minimalism and made a wrong turn, or if the weird overstated children's-bedsheet-pattern aesthetic was deliberate. Either way I kind of like it.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i forgot the east river pipe stuff. that is BRILLIANT!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd agree with Keith's Harvest Ministers recomendation - though the best stuff they did on Sarah is on the album "Little Dark Mansions".

I went to see the Harvest Ministers last week - they've a new bass player who sings as well, she's much better than the last one - not as muso but more enthusiastic. I've seen 'em on and off for the last 15 years as this was the best gig I;ve seen 'em do in about the last 5. Even if they didn't do "Fictitious Christmas" from "Little Dark Mansions".
